MemberOn this side of the pond, we do not have the same kind of news jingles in modern times such as the old R.1 News and “Newsbeat” jingles with a sung “News” tag. There have been news stations with sung jingles such as KFWB when they were all news.
I still think the best news theme ever was the memorable Drake news theme used by the RKO stations (KHJ, KFRC, et al..) and to this day finds itself on oldies stations out here.
I am still looking for a news sounder that was used on KFI, Los Angeles in the late 1970s.

It’s been posted recently but this maybe my favourite from Power FM in 1993.
Have never been a fan of jingles that sing the word “news”, but this legal ID of sorts with in-house produced bed manages to sound authoritative and match the upbeat style of the station, at that time.

I was about to comment and tried to post audio…
HOWEVER – I’m finding that ALL the “graphics” links we’ve all been posting successfully via Michi’s “embed” service for quite some time are now showing a grey “Go to Soundloud.com to hear…” type message banner instead.
The “direct” links are still valid, but I hope S/c have not gone and “upgraded” their system “backwards” yet again?

MemberMichi – I hear a version of that old KHJ jingle every day on Dave Fogel’s breakfast show on Chicago’s 104.3 K-Hits where our good friend Jeffrey T Mason is a presenter. The K-Hits News Jingle is sung at the start and sounds great on air.

Thanks for all the comments. As EVERY jingle company has to make News jingles I think we’ve a lot of scope here to hear many ‘gems’ from the last 50+ years – dig deep! And of course many are just instrumental, so it’s a level playing field for those companies who do not major on vocals!?
Also, I was wondering just how many incarnations the famous JAM Radio 1 jingle had as it evolved? Has any JingleMadder ever strung all the variations together?
I’ve worked with a LOT of News jingles/formats over the years – from Metro Radio’s first (huge orchestral instrumental (before the rip-off one rather strangely based on John Miles song called ‘Music’!) to Piccadilly Radio where in 1976 there WAS no jingle we were just told to fade out the song on the hour and in came the newsreader’s voice “Piccadilly News at 8 o’clock I’m Katrina Rance” – that REALLY sounded flat !

In general I feel that news jingles are probably better as instrumentals. The majority of news in bulletins is bad news so going into it with jolly singing could be a bit distasteful. However, I thought the sung news jingle ‘Gem AM…News’ from the old Gem was brilliant. It had a good build up to the sung part and this really is the key. Something that builds up to a crescendo works well into a news bulletin.

#3 Ocean Sound

For me….
No. 3: BBC Radio Humberside 1984 (David Arnold Music)…I was thinking Radio Mercury at that time too but opted for this
No. 2: BRMB 1982 (Standard Sound/Muff Murfin)
No. 1: Signal Radio 1983 (Alfasound)October 29, 2015 at 5:48 pm #98816IainJohnston
Not fair Len !!! :^)
You KNOW we could each do favourite Top TENs or probably even Top DOZENs when it comes to (classic) UK news intros alone, regardless of the more recent tendency towards USA-style “TOH”s rather than “proper” news intros, since UK stations have (mostly) tended to have news at the top of the clock hour for historical reasons, especially as few USA stations “do ” news bulletins now rather than just their “legal ID”, which for non-UK JMers is something not required on this side of the Pond :^)
Some very interesting ones already though!
October 29, 2015 at 8:13 pm #98818IainJohnston
Still, here’s the three examples I was going to post before s/c scrapped their flash mode…
https://soundcloud.com/allthebestjingles/ij-3bestnews-01The last one was sung with about a dozen variants for different news bulletin times of day etc – and (as often in that ILR era) there were “out of news” versions too – what have we lost along the way? :^(

Sorry for the delay. I forget who put together this montage of 1976 JAM Radio One news remixes. It might have been David Hemsley. Whoever you are – we salute you. There was never a more iconic news intro than this.

That is sheer beauty (I’ve never heard this “complete” mix before!)
The Best news Jingle ever…..So many various elements in this one jingle!
Jon… Has any other Radio Station had this custom Jingle re-sung since 1976 ? (apart from Great Yorkshire Gold and Sean Martin)October 30, 2015 at 9:46 pm #98828TServo2049
My personal favorites:
1. Drake sounder
2. CBS Radio top of hour (1983-2000)

3. Right now, it’s this 1970s KMPC sounder:

I think it was maybe 2-3 years ago some of us posted news stuff montages?
I’ll try and recover mine – but I know there’s a collosal amount of such cuts from the UK alone, especially pre-internet & pre-USA-producers eras, so there are many items from “north of Watford” that might surprise many JMers even today.
October 31, 2015 at 12:18 pm #98830UKJingles
MemberThinking about it……
It really is only the UK that has had proper (sung) “News Jingles”
The others are either Top of the Hour cuts or News Sounders…
My second favourite was the old Downtown Radio News Sounder from TM (Standard Sound) from the early 1980’s.October 31, 2015 at 12:40 pm #98831professor1036
News intros…I’ll just pop this here!

Hi Iain
You are right , with 50+ years of “radio jingles like they used to be”
three is a bit restrictive!
Prof: thanks for the mammoth production – I missed that first time around!

MemberGlad to see I’m consistent. I commented on the Prof’s montage when it was originally posted, that the Southern Sound cut was my favourite!
And here’s the mega montage I posted a few years ago https://soundcloud.com/jonno-4/toth

Great stuff from Jonno and The Prof…
“I think it was maybe 2-3 years ago some of us posted news stuff montages?”
To my embarrassment, I’ve found my previous two contributions were actually compiled in 2008 !
SEVEN years… Tempus fugits…If in doubt, insert holding pattern until an entirely new selection can be compiled…here’s a merged version of the 2 original ones…
