I know some of the old farts like Wilson, Hemsley, Barton and myself have a good collection of William B.Tanner material, however, I`m hoping to get some of the younger jingle listeners “into” WBT. This is probably my favourite demo from WBT – Simple & Free – originally created for WCOD Cape Cod.

I Don`t regard myself as an old fart but i do regard myself as a William B Tanner lover.
If David could somehow make the above link active again [or email it to me]
i would love to listen to this post as i obviously missed it the first time round.November 13, 2006 at 11:36 am #27718SeanMartinpetewilson wrote:

JonesTM owns the rights to the Tanner product and iJingles have done a number of resings over the past few months. In fact, we've just transferred the 11 channel Simple & Free multitrack tape from anaolgue to digital format in preparation for an upcoming iJingles resing.
Media Preservation is licensed to distribute Tanner reference packages and is in the process of compiling a lot of material direct from the master tapes, so stay-tuned for information of upcoming CD releases and leave some space on your Christmas gift wish list!

January 1, 2007 at 9:20 pm #28243ratnobMemberBy the way, this was one of Len Groat's favourite jingle packages. When he was PD at Radio Trent, lots of the Alfasound jingles bore a striking resemblance to the WBT originals. Great to hear them again. They were written, I think I'm right in saying, by Mr Chris Kershaw …
January 6, 2007 at 3:30 pm #28325BarrasInteresting that you mention this Ratnob – I was chatting with Wixy1360 the other day about this very subject of radio ID jingles, that sound very similar to others. There were a lot of British jingles in the 1970`s and 1980`s that sounded very much like American jingles.
You mentioned William B.Tanner and Alfasound…I`ve found this one as an example from WBT`s Simple and Free.
In this sample you`ll hear the William B.Tanner original jingle for WCOD Cape Cod and then the “Tanner influenced” jingle from Alfasound for Radio Trent.

Can anyone think of any others ?

David Barras”Quite a few – and I'll post a selection if time permits!
What's daft is – we as collectors (or at least those of us with a conscience
and a respect for the Copyrights ) get worried about giving out dubs
of stuff, yet some Jingle Companies can very obviously “clone” the musical
& production style & content of other people's work!I know that Alfasound weren't alone in this in the UK (RFM Edinburgh
anybody!??), and I've recently heard 80s/90s TM Century cuts that
sounded very like JAM material from the same era. I do appreciate
that e.g. Dallas-based companies use a pool of talented writers
musicians and vocalists so there must be times where those freelancers'
influence will appear in the product of more than one Production Company! The late George Harrison got sued for a lot less close-sounding effort
than some of the more blatant copycat stuff!NB – I'm not meaning jingles that are purposely written to emulate
the sound of a commercial hit record – there are many examples of
that (Freeway Paris – Nostalgie network is an excellent example)
and I'm sure in those cases the Jingle Company(ies) will have
some kind of Royalty / Permissions agreement in place.January 7, 2007 at 9:12 pm #28372topcatIt should be noted that the WKWX version of Simple & Free was actually sung at TM (produced by Tony Griffin), not by the original Thunder Prods.

January 7, 2007 at 9:28 pm #28374ratnobMemberI'm still sulking at being described by Mr Barras as an old fart.
Beacon's Sunshine Sound bears more than a passing resemblance to JAM's Magic Music. I once posted a comparison of the cuts, but have lost it, I'm afraid.

January 7, 2007 at 10:53 pm #28377IainJohnstonMemberI've bunged on a quick selection of blatant soundalikes
on Anorak's Corner, as “ImitationVersusFlattery.WMA”
– don't know when it'll appear thoughShouldn't be too hard to spot the ringers!
January 8, 2007 at 4:45 pm #28388BarrasHow about this one from TM`s Synchronism # 8 for KLUV Dallas-Fort Worth and then something rather similar for Southern Sound in jolly olde England…

David Barras”They didn't even TRY to avoid it sounding the same on that one!
Here's the ones I couldn't get to load yesterday….
January 10, 2007 at 10:37 am #28406BarrasFrom a legal/copyright perspective, how did they get away with airing those “JAM clones” ? !
Thanks for putting that montage together, seems like jingle plagiarism was once rife in the UK, thankfully no more, apart from the Chris Moyles “JAM clones” a few years ago…

January 10, 2007 at 3:17 pm #28414BigdaveThose RFM JAM ripoffs are so bad, they're good!
It bears asking the question though – why didn't they just go to JAM like everybody else?
January 10, 2007 at 3:29 pm #28415IainJohnstonMemberBarras wrote: “From a legal/copyright perspective, how did they (RFM) get away with airing those “JAM clones” ? ! David Barras”
Probably because a) no-one at JAM could hear them pre-Internet era
b) SE in Manchester wouldn't be listening much to
an Edinburgh station (few Scottish stations bought
from Alfasound in the early UK JAM era)
b) if JW had considered legal action (retrospectively)
then SE – JAM's own licenscee in the UK – would
no doubt have had to explain the earlier Alfa clones
of other companies' work?Still, its all history now – and many of today's new breed of jingle companies
all seem to sound the same as each other anyway a lot of the time, even
without them “lifting” another's musical scores. !sadAnyone got any more blatant examples for us all to hear???
