Maybe this discussion was started earlier on JM but I could not find it.
From KIIS (derived from WLS) to Z100, and from WMGK to WLYF/Lite FM: some stations have had jingles through the years made by almost every jingle company using the exact same logo melody. That’s why I (together with @KenBurt) wonder: who owns a logo melody? Or is it impossible to copyright 6 notes? For example, these cuts (also posted at the WMGK heritage discussion) were clearly based on the Magic 103 series made by JAM. How does it work, legally? Does TM has to pay JAM for this?
The Radio Two logo from the Grove days is owned by Groove Addicts – Hence the change in 2012 as royalties were still due on the Groove Logo even if they did not make the jingles – hence once the new jingles were bedded in a revised version of each jingle to gently introduce a new updated logo ( better value for the licence payer) was produced
There’s the story of how WABC changed one note in their logo so that they were no longer paying the rights to the writer of ‘We’ll Take Manhattan’ (Cole Porter), plus lots of other insights: http://www.musicradio77.com/jam.html

Correction to my own comment – not Cole Porter but Rodgers & Hart
