At our station Radio Noord we used The #1 Voice for almost a decade (until we flipped to the more Hot AC WNIC-series). It was the successor to our TM KRLD package (People You Know) and gave the station a strong instant authority. We needed the package because by Dutch law we had to split our station in 2 (the regions we serviced became too big).

Here is an overview of the cuts, mixed (as far as I know) to be used in mono as in stereo:

What other stations used The #1 Voice?

I assume the vocals are from Top Format

          That’s correct, Martin.

It is always a joy to see the singers ending words together, especially the station name with an R and D at the end, ‘Noord’. Pim Roos was base, as (almost) always.

I normally like TOP FORMAT Vocals.. BUT this sounds like it was recorded in a Bathroom!

It’s definitely not from the master.

It sounds like extra reverb was added as this dub was made. It’s not just the vocals, the music tracks also have echo on them that isn’t really there.

There are more than 30 stations who used some or all of “The #1 Voice”, including WJR Detroit in 1987.

I think it’s more complicated – someone has messed up and inverted one side so it’s out of phase – this has cancelled some of the core or center mix sound letting the stereo reverb dominate…..

Now you mention it, I have listened to it with headphones. It seems it was dubbed from mono to stereo. I will have a look in the archives, there should be a proper demo copy of the master somewhere.
