A refreshing change I guess (after 15 years of the same!)
Mind you I wouldn’t of known it was a different Jingle Company producing them
(If I didn’t know already!)
Are all “hip” Jingles nowadays Solo voiced!
But on the plus side Top Marks for making them available to download on day one!July 16, 2012 at 9:54 am #85392fredgreekI like the new jingles, particularly the one Chris opened his show with at 06:30 this morning. I liked being able to listen to story of them this morning on the Earshot Creative Review podcast…though it sort of takes the fun out of listening to the radio waiting for a ‘never heard before’ jingle to crop up so that I can record it! I’m guessing that most of the presenters have ‘sung IDs’ based on these cuts, like the Ken/Vine/Mayo jingles in the podcast and the Vanessa jingle in the video?
July 16, 2012 at 12:04 pm #85393SeanyThe news jingle sounds like the un used groove addicts one, or the “alt mix” they did.
Not really impressed with some of them, they sound weak.
July 16, 2012 at 1:55 pm #85395upsweepMemberYes i like them, because they fit the station sound we have been used too, listened to the ECR podcast a few times, everything on the brief has been done, use of the sonic logo – like others had commented you really would not tell the diiference between the GA-WB Productions. Yes the Beatles Weekend cuts have been redone from a few years back.
Yes well done for putting the package out there from day one, i whether how long b4 Wise Buddah put them out there or have they been deprived of those rights with the contract they signed
July 16, 2012 at 4:43 pm #85398GrahamCollinsYes interesting point Hayley – I doubt if any of the package will be available for syndication by WB, even if the logo could be adapted. I did rather think that the WB website would be waving banners and flashing lights today but nothing……….
July 16, 2012 at 4:57 pm #85400bossjockMemberAlthough it pains me to say so and while I would have been delighted if JAM had won the bid, I quite like these jingles. The video is interesting too, as I always like to see musicians in action. I agree with Chalks’ earlier point though – will the programme producers and presenters use them – and if they do, will they use them to their best advantage?
July 16, 2012 at 7:51 pm #85406mjb1124MemberGotta say, this is a pretty damn good jingle package. Good mix of musical styles with REAL instruments (the orchestra is a great touch), and the vocals are strong and clear for the most part. And in spite of all the fuss that was made over it, the logo is still very effective, and I’m glad they don’t conform to the trend of putting it at the beginning of every track.
July 17, 2012 at 9:10 am #85420UKJinglesMemberCould somebody be awfully sweet and upload the Jingle Video Session to YouTube or a File Sharing Site please?
I can’t work out how to do it with BBC embeded Video!
I like to keep any Jingle related Video sessions for prosperity, someone was kind enough to do the same with the Chris Moyles Birthday Show earlier this year. Many Thanks
July 17, 2012 at 9:44 am #85422RobinBlamiresIt can be viewed on said site here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSkmSTIN_3k&feature=player_detailpage
A worthy view.

Yes I alway enjoy watching Jingle Singers doing their thing…..
Sorry Robin I meant to download and keep for Prosperity.
I’m able to download YouTube material okay but haven’t sussed a way to do it directly from the BBC Site!
Someone did the same with the Chris Moyles Birthday Show Video (that was originally on the BBC Site)July 18, 2012 at 2:32 am #85433jr2479Very good jingles. A good variety of styles.

Robin`s right, that is playing from YouTube…

July 18, 2012 at 4:08 am #85435BarrasIs it just me or is the Radio 2 video similar to “The Making Of WABC #21” by JAM ?
I`m not saying the jingles are similar, I`m talking about the actual video presentation, the only difference is the Radio 2 video doesn`t have any narration…
(!) Radio 2 video starts with a view of the percussion booth – JAM video starts with percussion…
(2) Radio 2 video shows rhythm section – JAM video shows rhythm section
(3) Radio 2 video shows a shot of a harp – JAM video shows a harp
(4) Radio 2 video shows orchesration – JAM video shows orchestration
Etc, etc, etc…
Of course, this glossy, Radio 2 video is “all new” to Mr. Joe Public, the average Radio 2 listener viewing the video on the Radio 2 website…it hasn`t been done before, has it !
Even the Radio 2 title is similar “The Making Of…”
July 18, 2012 at 5:35 am #85436ratnobMemberI’m impressed with the Radio 2 jingles. I think they’re invigorating the station sound. But the sheer variety of them (rock to classical) does expose the bizarre pick-n-mix nature of the station – trying to be all things to all people.
Also, on the jingles themselves, I’m not so sure that the heavy emphasis on solo voices always works: these are jingles, I think, that work better at the start (grabbing our attention and telling us the station name), but work less well in maintaining flow into the music. Lots end quite abruptly, so that the transition to the song will be less good.
I also find myself tiring of the R2 logo – especially when it has the pause between the ‘BBC’ and the ‘Radio 2’.
All of which may be a sign that I’m a sucker for vocal harmonies over solos.
Main thing though is that we have new jingles on a national station and a UK company shows it can producing big classy jingles that meet with general approval.
There – end of lecture.

Ooops Silly old Hector…….
Thanks for that Robin/David…..Thank god for YTDJuly 18, 2012 at 9:55 am #85439LenGroatBarras:
I think you’ve noticed something interesting..!
I exchanged emails with Chris Reay over the build up to the package, he was most helpful and friendly, knew I’d made a lot of jingles (but a LONG time ago!) and clearly appreciates JAM product. I suspect the idea of the video was suggested by the JAM one.
Ratnob:
I agree that ‘the heavy emphasis on solo voices’ does not work well on jingles, designed to last 10-12 years!? The raspy male singer for example wears on me from the first play (you’d never want Rod Stewart doing solo on any jingles!?)
I suspect the emphasis on solos is because Wise Buddah do not have a full ‘vocal group’ they can pull together regularly to keep a constant sound, as JAM do. Also it is much more challenging to create block vocals; the nearest any company in Britain ever got to this style was Alfasound, but only when we ‘imported’ Jackie Dickson, Mike Collier, Johnny & Debbie Hooper to join the English singers such as Sheila and Steve (who ARE both excellent).
Sensibly, Wise Buddah do not try and emulate what JAM do very well already, or they would be compared?
As you say, they ‘work less well in maintaining flow into the music. Lots end quite abruptly, so that the transition to the song will be less good’.
Your point made me listen again, and basically many are more ‘tv logos’ in style
(than radio jingles) With some suitable footage and re-worded they would work on BBC television. They are ‘mini songs’ ~ too long to be used as jingles, BUT in any case as most Radio 2 presenters are ‘stars’ and were never ‘djs’ they would have no idea HOW to use JAM /TM style product anyway?“I also find myself tiring of the R2 logo – especially when it has the pause between the ‘BBC’ and the ‘Radio 2′”
I’m surprised they did not change the logo; it’s nowhere near as flowing/melodic, as the JAM ‘Newstalk Radio 77 W A B C, New York City’ on the JAM video.
Yes, the Radio 2 package is GOOD (in places) but the video shows that 7 violins played at JAM sound much better than 20 violins of the BBC orchestra!
JAM could have made Radio 2…. a GREAT package…
July 18, 2012 at 11:16 am #85441UKJinglesMemberI think the “Heritage Logo” would sound great with a full Group Sing (i.e. JAM)
GROOVEWORX certainly hit the jackpot by creating it (it is so memorable!)
I would of thought though that “new” Logo’s were exhausted and I’m surprised this one was not created back in the 50’s/60’s or even 70’s.
The News Cut is no way as good as the previous version (maybe it’s because the presenters don’t seem to be using it right on talk-up?)July 19, 2012 at 4:39 pm #85453simon_t123MemberI’ve been keeping an ear on Steve Wright’s show to see how he plays about with the new package, which led me to conclude that Steve Wright’s show is very odd indeed ! That’s another story mind, sometimes jingles out of news, sometimes not, sometimes AJ, occasionally shotguns of the new WB package, sometimes even that classical vocal-less ID (why ??? especially as it went into a non-classical recent song !) … Mr Wright also appears to have a shortcut version of the new news intro, it’s beats into logo with none of this new pad business, but then he does seem to do things quite his own way …
I do keep listening to the ECR podcast & audio ripped from that video, these WB R2 cuts have been ringing in my ears all week, some might burn fast like Evan’s brekkie gospel affair, and theme wise I’m not sure there is as big a variety as before …
On comparing the Groove package in full (the 20 minute demo) and the new material some cuts such as the Sinatra Standard jobby and classical ID are so much alike to the Groove cuts of old that things are a little too familiar … I like the sound tho’ and hearing a promo for O’Grady today seems to suggest that any WB creations from recent years (as per the Beatles cuts) are welcome to remain on VCS for now !!!
I’d imagine there might be top-ups to the core package in times to come, and I gotta say all this jingle hub-bub has got me listening solidly to R2 now lols
July 19, 2012 at 4:55 pm #85454IainJohnstonMemberAll sorts of reactions pro & con to the new Radio2 package on various forums.
Personally, its starting to grow on me, even though WB do appear to have very skillfully successfully re-created the “sound” that Groove had already achieved, that makes some people feel its almost an update of the existing Groove package rather than a true “new” package entirely.
Considering the wide range of what Radio 2 “do”, I think this is going to work though!
OK, its not for “traditonal Dallas sound fans”, but the range of musical styles and the production values I think would get a definite nod of appreciation from the Dallas Seattle and San Diego professionals.Whether the somewhat harsh drums on many cuts will wear out the ears after (possibly, another…) 15 years will have to be seen though.
Personally, I don’t like the wimpy new news intro though – already hear presenters struggling to get “all the words” of the “banner ID” in – the added “small ramp” doesn’t seem to be quite long enough – and in “other places” there’s grumbles about the “PopMaster” quiz cut being a bit too lively – I think a remix of the two would give a far better and certainly better timed & livlier TOH/news-in…
Like this, in fact…
http://snd.sc/Qc1LGY(Those of you who know about “Frankenstein Mixes”….
July 19, 2012 at 7:52 pm #85461LenGroatOne more point..
…as Britain’s BIGGEST ‘heritage’ station, there is no reason why for a (small) re-licencing fee , Radio 2 could not ALSO use its ‘old/classic’ jingles
**that still sound NEW
**fresh
**are short
**contemporary with the 80s and 90s songs (!)
**would save money…and unlike the WB cuts,
*FUNCTIONAL with music!!
July 19, 2012 at 11:34 pm #85466Paul MMemberWixy – Love your Frankenstein Mix.
I agree all the presenters don’t have long enough to say the news strap over the ramp and then they end up crashing it which doesn’t sound good.
I have heard so many different versions of when presenters start the jingle so they don’t crash it
Some should one direct Chris Reay to here so he can hear Wixy’s effort. Get WB to do a new version based on it . It would also be good for everyone to be able to ask him questions. As this has been the most talked about Jingle package in the UK.
From what I have heard of the jingles I quite like them and they bring a freshness to the Logo.July 20, 2012 at 7:53 am #85468IanFAlso it is much more challenging to create block vocals; the nearest any company in Britain ever got to this style was Alfasound
Hi Len. That is not strictly true IMO. Alfasound were good in their own right but lets not forget the vocals of David Arnold Music. Their singing got it pretty much spot on and on a couple of occasions I did think they were American singers at first.
AJ Productions also produced some good block vocal sounds, I think with 3 singers, but major respect goes to David Arnold with using 6 singers.
I personally like the new Radio 2 package. It’s not the JAM standard but they are good with some nice harmonies. I do. however, think the news ID lacks the power of the previous jingle and not as good as the JAM news jingles
July 20, 2012 at 10:42 am #85469IainJohnstonMemberAlthough “just for fun”, my “Frankenstein Mix” of a “better R2 news-in” seems to already have had over 120 plays!
So what would it sound like with the “banner” wording spoken over the front of it at the “normal” BBC presenter “pace” rather than squashed into the short ramp on the “proper” news-in as being heard on air so far this week?
http://snd.sc/NCnTqUJuly 20, 2012 at 2:19 pm #85471LenGroatMethinks a certain ‘north of the border’, jinglemadd’er deserves a consultancy contract with the BBC !?
And given Radio 2’s dominance of the airwaves (thanks to over-syndicated, under-local, ‘ILR’) maybe they don’t need to have all this spheel anyway..
How about a jingle that just SINGS:
‘Ray De oo Tew… News”!!
They could use the old Radio 1 JAM jingle …
NOW THAT WAS GOOD !!
July 20, 2012 at 4:22 pm #85473UKJinglesMemberHey Iaan that news jingle mix is brilliant, so much better than thast wimpy one they use now!
Len…..Wouldn’t that be a dream come true (can someone mix a “two” into that Radio one News Jingle?)
Does anyone know how much this “new” package cost?
I’m guessing a damn sight more than any US produced package would of done!
But hey it’s all down to politics and I guess I contributed a few pence to it as well! )AuthorPosts- You must be logged in to reply to this topic.
