[JAM / PAMSMember]

For those who may not have heard it, or for those with noisy mono dubs…

The full demo of the WOWO “We’ll Make Your Day” package is now online at the JAM website for the first time in stereo.

It’ a nice adult-AC package for a heritage station, and I think it captures key elements of the “early 80’s JAM sound” nicely.

Wow, it sounds beautiful. I don’t recall hearing that demo before.

I recognise 2 of the cuts…

#3 – I know it as Radio 2’s “The new Radio Times”.
#11 – Used as a news intro on an Irish station back in the 80’s (?) – possibly Q102, Dublin.

Hi Jon. Thanks for uploading this gem.

I do love that 80s JAM sound. The tight writing, if that’s the phrase, of the jingles back then were a real treat to listen too. However, it got me thinking. I hear PAMS jingles and hear jazz undertones there. Not in all of them mind. I’ve heard the musicians were mostly jazz based when PAMS started. Which brings me onto JAM’s style of writing jingles in the 1980s. I get the feel of Latin Jazz in some of the jingles. This has been on my mind for years. It came to a head one night. I was shaving and listening to a Jazz FM compilation CD. There were a number of Latin jazz tracks on there and they sounded like JAM a little….I nearly cut myself. I wasn’t suprised when Jon mentioned Barry Manilow in one of Geoff’s recent interviews. Is it a conincidence that my CD library is filled with JAM demos and a certain Mr Manilow?

Awesome to hear so clean after 32 years- WOWO started using these in the spring of 82 after a Tuesday package that had been on for about three years- it was quite a change- The whole package is a gem and cuts 4 and 6 have amazing depth( or whatever musical term would be) and so much going on in them they were my favorites. This package had some other mixes too. It’s great to hear jingles just doing their job effectively; cleanly- these were a great example of that.

I am late to the party on this one. Just found the discussion.
Awesome to hear these in stereo but now I am curious. Were they originally mixed and delivered to WOWO in mono?
Or did JAM pull out the master tape and mix it all over again for the website?

I really liked the JAM resings for WOWO from Digital Mix and other great packages in which they strongly adapted the unique audio logo WOWO melody (aircheck is off-air on AM…)

Ha! Someone shared my Soundcloud page in here. Yes, those were good jingles. Most of those JAM cuts were from Digital Mix, The Only One, and Variety Pack.

I agree, I feel the same. Maybe it is the vocal arrangement? It flows from one part into another segment. #4 also has a great base layer in it in the last note…

I know I’m responding to an old post, but thought I might add something hopefully of value to the discussion. Would be willing to bet the Christmas cut was sung in the 90s as the vocal group is different, namely because Abby Holmes is singing S1/lead rather than Jackie Dixon along with some other hints.

Again, obligatory apologies for responding to an old post. pretty sure I saw over on historyofwowo.com that WOWO was broadcasting in C-QUAM in the 80s. Not sure if that means JAM originally mixed to mono but than remixed in stereo or if the cuts were delivered in stereo the first time around, though.

Definitely a great ear there – not sure I’d have been able to tell it was a different group, let alone who the different leads were! You may very well be right – the reference number just says “Aca[pella]”, maybe Jon or whoever just liked it and felt like throwing it in the updated presentation. JAM also added extra cuts for You’ll Like Our Style, and the remaining KHIT cuts that weren’t on the demo for Nonstop Power, so there’s precedent.

Pretty sure that’s what happened then. Also, both are seven-voice groups, so the difference is not as obvious.
