July 12, 2007 at 7:50 pm #31278IainJohnstonMember“They have signed back on with JAM cuts from Home of The Hits and Do It Again…….. “
Just heard a Jon Wolfert “CBS-FM” sonovox cut! And a
jock crash a vocal (Stevie Wonder) and then correct
himself…can that be done with voicetracking?!?!Doesn't sound very “Personality” though – very tight
but sounds good and live and quite pacy but not much
60s material being played – but glad they're back, should
never have been dumped by the suits! No ads though?Did anyone record the actual changeover back from
Jack to CBS-FM by any chance?Listen live…
http://cbsplayer.streamtheworld.com/index.php?CALLSIGN=WCBSFMAnd why can't we have a station like this in the UK ?
July 12, 2007 at 8:52 pm #31280ratnobMemberIt's sounding great – a return to real radio!

Just in case you missed ithttp://www.sendspace.com/file/94dl9p
the WCBS FM re-launch… you HAVE to listen if you are a radio person over 40….
and it's TWENTY minutes long….
33 years of NY nostalgia.. AND lots of subtle touches … (Samantha's 'nose wiggle' noise from Bewitched over Louis Armstrong!) dozens of others….
…. and Frankie Valli !
The mixing /editng is SUPERB. Can we found out who made it ??
He/she deserves an award…
Plus it PROVES that JAM make the BEST jingles of all time…
July 13, 2007 at 1:49 pm #31288freq-kyAs the hours coundown to me being another year older and having heard the montage (Which brought back a lot of memories for me).All I have to say about CBS FM is (sorry for the pun)…………………….
Do It Again !………This time for keeps.
Thank you Neal for the broadcast.

The montage was created by Chris Angelo and was back-timed to hit the station ID at 1:01pm and then go into DO IT AGAIN.
Check out http://bobshannon.com/cbsfm/photos-1.html for in-studio pix of the switchover and such.
There was a great promo done by Rupert Holmes: “Hi, I'm Rupert Holmes… and if you like Pina Coladas and gettin' caught in the rain, you'll absolutely LOVE the fact that CBS-FM 101.1 is back! And if you don't like Pina Coladas, and you like Margaritas instead… maybe Jimmy Buffet can do this promo.”
July 13, 2007 at 5:03 pm #31291IainJohnstonMemberThanks TC for the background info!
“Hey.. that makes TWO people in Britain with a WCBS FM fridge magnet“
I've actually got TWO Len – but I'm keeping them for
the Antiques Roadshow in 2027 – they always say “You'll
get more money for a pair!”Are you able to post the “customised TOH perhaps Len???
And an update:-

July 13, 2007 at 8:21 pm #31294BigdaveWelcome back WCBS…
That montage is fantastic.Very reminsicent of the “History” demo that Jones TM did a few years ago. Nice to hear JAM back on the air too.
Now,if only British Radio could do a station as good as this one….which gives me an idea –
Time to bring GEM back,Len? Let's lobby GCAP !!!!

I'm complimented that you would like to 'bring back GEM'.It was indeed a magic station…
However, now would not seem to be quite the right time…
I feel the basic problem with radio now is that everyone is watchng everyone else, and desperate to keep up with 'fashion'.
As regards jingles
'Fashion' dictates that they use companies based anywhere except Dallas…
They are calling instrumentals 'themes'
Mis-using the term Shotguns
And using pop singers rather than jingle singers…
…. who have NO idea HOW to sing…
They want 'personality radio' ~ but do not give presenters any space to be personalities, or jingles that fit the personality style.
I believe there are some people in British radio now who WILL revive a GEM type station eventually. And if they do would not follow 'fashion' and not use shrieking singers on their jingles, but just buy the whole 'Do It Again' package from JAM.
It may be 14 years old but it's still as fresh and useable as it was on GEM, as WCBS FM are proving….
Maybe some of those decision makers should open their ears to it ?
July 14, 2007 at 11:49 am #31300bossjockMemberYes!! Yes!! Yes!! 100% correct Len
July 14, 2007 at 12:30 pm #31304mbMemberDo it again and home of the hits are two of JAMs greatest creations. I agree with Len the packages sound as good today as they did when first produced. I love a lot of newer jingles from other companies but this sort of production stands right at the top of the pile.
I've enclosed my own version of DIA1 for C100 – I knew the lyrics were tight and Jon did warn me but I just had to have that cut!!
Also enclosed are a couple of Beacon Radio versions which as I hope Len would agree alongside Trent was a station that knew how to use jingles and had great package after great package.
Turn up the instrument versions on these to hear the depth and luchness of the cuts.
At the end I've enclosed the Shropshire news intro as DIA became becaons News Intro.

AGREED – 'Do it again' was one of JAMs greatest creations, I was not so keen on 'Home of the Hits' but then again it was done for a different PD.
Jon told me the weather cut was based on a Buckingham's record, and I've since realised that the long cut is based partly on 'Saturday in the Park' by Chicago – a song about NYC so a perfect inspiration for a NYC radio station!
I LOVE the cut you chose for C100 (DIA Cut #1) and also the Beacon Radio versions (never heard those before) where the writer/singers manaaged to fit the name very well. I'm sure that with jingles like that Beacon were indeed EXCELLENT, but I never heard them at the time I was working abroad a lot in my other 'life' .
The instrumental version of the 'Harry Harrison' track shows how GREAT JAM are at making these. I always wanted that cut but could never devise a lyric that 'fitted'.
Is it just me, or just the ENERGY of the vocals, but it sounds like the singers on the original DIA sing
'C B YESSS FM' ! ? ?
I'll post my version of DIA Cut #1 soon….
July 14, 2007 at 11:15 pm #31320mbMemberThanks for the compliment I'll take your liking it as high praise indeed
I think other than your good self Pete Wagstaff used JAM jingles to the full. And the Beacon turbo Z package actually sounds better than the Z100 demo – It's the best sing of that package I've heard.I'm sure that the Beacon version very done very shortly after the WCBS ones.
Anyway as an even bigger treat for everyone heres Do it Again Cut 1 alternative version – slow
http://www.c1hundred.co.uk/CBSS.mp3
For that slower start to the hour!!!

I'd love to hear them – Turbo Z is one of my favourite packages.

July 20, 2007 at 1:14 pm #31491LenGroatAs promised, here is how cut # 1 from Do It Again sounds when resung in 2007, 14 years after the package first appeared.
ENJOY !

July 20, 2007 at 1:16 pm #31493IanMemberLen, the link is coming up as not valid
July 20, 2007 at 1:23 pm #31494IanMemberMust have been a blip. It's ok now Len.
Wow, that sounds great. Much better than some of these modern cuts made up of stuttering words and endless samples of hiss and bangs. A good sung jingle is the best.July 20, 2007 at 9:52 pm #31505LenGroat
Thanks Ian. I chose the cut carefully. Being able to have the BIG sell of 'New York' at the end as 'Len Groat' gave me a really strong sing of my name, and of course a great pad up to it… Only having a two syllable name I found it best to have it at the end of the cut ~ we never stop learning!I have to thank Jon for an incredibly fast turn around on it back in April. I 'sang' my idea on the phone to Judy, it was recorded and mixed by the Thursday, downloaded and debuted on air on the Sunday, along with 3 cuts from other JAM packages.
They are the BEST …
July 20, 2007 at 10:02 pm #31506mbMemberIt just makes the other smooth jingles sound thin and weak. JAM v's Bespoke there is no contest.
