Out of curiosity, what is the US Dollar equiv. of this price?

Based on this rate TC …
GB £1 = US $1.74870
It works out to $82.19 per reference copy.

But as far as I know not many people bought reference copies from Steve. I got a few but it was for alot less than the price above.

Yup… But it becomes a balancing act as to what to charge. It cost (and continues to cost) a small fortune to transfer the TM reels. Every one of them needed to be baked before playing… and were then dubbed in “real time” to a CD recorder. Also, we’ve payed for warehouse space for several years to house the stuff.
From a collector standpoint (as opposed to an archivist), it was important to me to make the stuff available in some economically feasible manner. I won’t even begin to talk about the propetual all-nighters spent in many stations’ production studios to copy tapes. If I had to do it today, I don’t know that I’d have the stamina to do it. Someone asked me when coming back from a multi-day/night dub session in Philadelphia how the city was. My response: How would I know? I only left the studio long enough to run down the street to 7-Eleven to get Slurpies!

Yeh – it’s a shame that service by Steve ended really.
Steve told me a while ago that the tapes and reels weren’t in a very ordered state following his hook-up to S2Blue – and it was unlikely they ever would be.
It needs a British version of TC to come in and tidy em up! I wish I had the time LOL! 🙄

I reckon me and you could be the British TC equivalent, I would certainly make the “time” by throwing the baby out with the bath-water… In fact, to get us started I have the address of where the Alfasound/JAM material is being stored, can you pick a lock ?

If you want a peek as to what the TM tapes looked like before their departure from Dallas, check out http://www.reelradio.com/mpf/millenium1.html
Keep in mind that the original shipment from Dallas was 106 BIG cartons. The balance were stacked five feet high, in no particular order, on 22 palets. There are still boxes that I haven’t unpacked yet.
In a way… it’s like a treasure hunt. I have cartons of reels we rescued from Jodie Lyons’ garage I haven’t even cracked open yet.
Keeping track of the asst reels and stuff was a challange at first, but I think I’ve finally got it down to a system that works… so things don’t slip through the cracks.
We’re continuing to crank through the stuff in priority order… and I’d like to have the majority of the 1/4″ stuff done by the end of this year!

LOL! Who says £50 million from a depot in Kent is the biggest robbery in Britain?
Blimey, we could be as notorious as Ronnie Biggs… Spoons and Barras – the Great Jingle Robbers!

I can just imagine it now on Crimewatch…
“2 men were seen leaving the premises with a large amount of 1/4 tape,DAT’s,and CD’s. They were both dressed in anoraks, and carried the stolen goods in a Radio One Roadshow holdall…”

MemberI think Spoons and Barras would get off with diminished responsibilty and let´s face it, some of Steve´s Jam resings were so seriously criminal that he should be given life by the jingle judge.

It could be a “menage a trios” cause I’de make the time to dub off those little puppies and I’ve got r/r, dat, minidisc and even………dcc, bragging rights over now Jones 👿

Geeze…
You wouldn’t have been able to transfer the TM reference tapes from the late eighties / early nineties. They were stored on DigitalVHS tapes in the F-1 format.
Of course, I also have a 1/2″ 4-Track; a 1″ 8-Track; a biiiiig deck w/a 1″ 8-track stack and a 2″ 16-track and 24-track head stack. That’s in addition to all of the formats you mentioned (except dcc)…. and of course, DA-88 8-track digital.
Okay… I’ve done MY bragging for the night. . . . . . . so there.

Spoons and Barras are now in hiding just outside Tonbridge in Kent…(if there`s anyone from Kent Police reading this, we`re only joking guv`nor…)
I know what you mean about some of the JAM resings Paul (Alfasound vocals recorded in Manchester UK over original JAM tracks) but don`t forget, the initial dubbing service also included master JAM dubs (i.e. vocals recorded at JAM in Dallas), for example, I bought the Metro FM reference dub for £35 and we all know about our Scottish buddy WIXY, buying the Channel 103 Jersey reference dub. Incidentally, is the solo vocalist either Bruce Upchurch or Chris Kershaw on the Channel 103 package ?
I was just gonna buy a dub of JAM package (all Dallas singing & dancing) for Clyde One FM and Steve stopped the dubbing service.

If you missed it over Christmas, thanks Wixy1360 (Iain Johnston) I uploaded the Channel 103 jingle package (the fifty best sounds in Jersey) for everyone to download here:
http://www.jinglemad.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=1183
Get it while you can because I will soon need to make room on my server.
Many thanks again to Wixy1360 (Iain Johnston) for these fantastic jingles!
Back on the subject of JAM package dubs, for the record I bought (Red Rose) Rock FM 1995 and Radio Wave 1993. I only wish I’d bought a few more!

Thanks! I’d not heard some of those cuts before, and especially good to hear the talk-up versions of the Best Show II Image cuts. Bloody excellent stuff there!
Wish I’d bought more packages from Steve as well…

MemberHands up who thinks Jon Wolfert should offer a service like Steve England and TC! $50 for a dub of any Jam package from the reference room.

MemberI trying to create a mental picture of a 21st century Alias Smith & Jones
galloping across the Pennines with reels & disks spilling out from their
saddlebags saying “We have got to get INTO this business!” while the
Cheshire “Polis” chase them in a (S2)Blue Ford Prefect shouting “Tazer!
Tazer! Tazer!!” …As David has said, he and I bought ref copies from Steve, and indeed
we’d both been after the Clyde One FM JAM composite, BUT who else
that reads these forums also bought ref CDs in either of the TWO
apparitions of Steve’s (excellent) dubbing service ???It would be intriquing to see if a list could be generated between us all
as to just how much of those references have seen the light of day! And, which “Holy Grails” we’d like to have dubbed from the tapes if they
could be released (I’m aware there’s legal issues, as well as technical
ones), but “What if…”!?!PS – if the Clyde One JAM composite IS in that storage warehouse,
I’ll gladly drive the getaway car for B & S ! (as long as DaveW
can provide a hideaway in Jersey!)February 25, 2006 at 4:38 pm #19762IainJohnston

…and thanks for doing that too, Mark! so many people had expressed
an interest in the package it seemed the right time to let it loose.
I’ve never quite understood why I and others always liked it so much,
its not like its a lyrically-spectacular resing, or is it like me if you’ve
ever had a summer holiday in Jersey as we did in 1994 (when the
package was on-air) it just seemed to go well with the sunshine &
ambience of the Island? Battle of Flowers day…cream teas…a bit of
French atmosphere…The Secret Garden… sandy beaches…Gorey
Castle (can’t spell it the Oregu..thingy name!)…Channel Island Ice
Cream….or is it just(?) Mr Wolfert’s sheer high quality of product
even for a tiny station on a tiny island?By the way, my apologies to various people waiting for CDs, etc,
etc – I will be trying very hard to catch up now that (almost) every-
thing here is now put back together again (plus the broadband fiasco
is now unfankled at last).February 26, 2006 at 11:07 am #19769Spoons

Oh – and there are lots of tapes/reels in my suitcase.
Anyone for a dub of Cheltenham Radio? 😯
Seriously, I got Trent 12, Chiltern Network, Great North Radio and YRN2 (these were on cassette though in the days when Alfasound was offering dubs)
Then on CD I got YRN3, YRN 4, GEM AM, Radio Hallam 1986.
Ah! Happy days. Wish I’d got more…

I would love to have the time to spend days and nights dubbing stuff off R2R and DAT in order to preserve some of the intrinsic elements of UK radio over the last 20 years.
Now if only I could find a white transit in Kent with a bundle of used £50’s …… 😈 😈

In theory, it all sounds wonderful. But as many people warned me, be careful of what you wish for. If I were to give up my “real” job and dedicate all of my time working on the stuff that is here on shelves and in boxes in a multitude of formats… I could easily spend years getting through the stuff.
I have finally out-sourced the transfer of the TM reference reels so that we’ll get them done. I have hired someone to transfer the reels… the most cumbersome process since each reel needs to be baked and then handled with TLC. So far, this has yielded 291 CDs of materials — and we’re far from done. Oh… and I’m doing the DATs in-house… which is also fun when you have to clean-up the digital dropout inherant in them.
I’m fortunate that I’ve been able to back-pocket fund these projects without my wife divorcing me. I’m not saying that it’s not a fun thing… but just some food for thought……..

Yeah me and Soons had to split up for a safe getaway……Spoons is on that tropical island and I`m still stuck in a suburb of Paris, France. The reel-tapes are reely heavy to move but I know a Mr M in Switzerland
who is willing to help me get all this stuff over the border and into a Swiss bank vault.Over and out.

Thats funny TC. I never saw the vacancy being posted on JM! However, I do know how time consuming the process it can be. If you’ve ever seen the state that Muff Murfin’s TM masters are in, you’ll know what I mean.
