Even for those people who never heard it live, WABC was for many years America’s most influential station. With its reverb on jock voices and innovative jingles, it set the standard for top 40 radio. Other stations would buy jingles based purely on what WABC were buying. Jon Wolfert (President of JAM) got hooked on jingles partly because of this station. It was personality radio that went way beyond the “Best variety / Better mix” cliches of today. It reflected the times, oozed creativity, and set the standard.
I listened to the station between 1978 and 1984 (when I visited and worked in the USA). It was a station I felt privileged to hear.
Here’s a montage of some great WABC jingles. There are no surprises here – just lots of great jingles, old and new, mixed together into an 8-minute montage.
