WABC in trouble??

      I read in the New York Daily News that 77 WABC is losing money and ratings. Gee a little help from Jam might in order.

        Bad programming and the owner from hell who is about to loose the cashcow that is Rush Limbaugh..Cumlus ran this station like all of it’s AM’s into the ground.,

          they may be bad managers, but remember, they own ALL of the abc O&O’s plus the radio net.

          their problem is clear channel (bain capital) wons rush (and almost all of their other programs) and clear just bought wor from buckley, which is where clears goodies will move over to….
          so how would a jingle pkg from the past help here guys?

              exactly.
              heres the catch. when efm created the rush network at abc, rush was aminor partner in the stock. ed mac sold his share to clear, rush still has his. there may be enough for rush, if he wishes, to veto the move to wor.

              why would he do it? good chance he gets a % of the spot gross. a spot at wor (no matter who owns it) is worth spit. good chance rush would suffer a serious pay drop in the ‘move’. it will be great fun to watch this unfold.

              as for the jingle issue? right again.
              you know….i often wondered why jam didnt solve world hunger with a jingle, or create world peace?, or, or, or? some people really believe it could. for them? i gotta bridge in brooklyn for ya, cheap.

                Clear Channel has done a very good job with WOR since they took it over. 10 of 12 hours between 6 am and 6 pm weekdays are local talk radio. Or, as the old WMCA slogan said, “they talk New York”. That could be the bigger cause of any problems WABC may be having.

                  Well the main problem is that AM isn’t as popular as FM. I know at least 2 station around here could unloaded it would be in a instant!

                    A lot debate about the state of NYC AM stations regularly appears on the New York Radio Message Board discussions.

                    Things like “infomercials at peak times”, ads for “personal products”, “snake oil medicines” and similar remarks now get applied a lot to once-proud WABC.

                    Yet the 2 biggest billing stations in NYC are AM – sister news-based stations WCBS and WINS.

                    PS – no-one amongst JM’s USA members commenting about the new “Nash-FM” Country in NYC using TM custom jingles?

                      A lot of good points have been brought up. But I think the biggest problem is that the audience for this particular brand of “news talk” is fading fast. Not to turn this into a political discussion, but whether you’ve got Rush Limbaugh or a lesser-known national host, it’s all the same talking points. Moving the station to FM won’t make a difference if nothing else changes, nor will changing the imaging (as much as I love the WABC JAM news/talk packages).

                      The station really needs to go through a transformation. Go live and local, with hosts who bring something new to the table, and don’t have them all represent the same end of the political spectrum (be it right, left, or wherever else). Put more efforts into the news department as well – yes, there’s the all-news stations, but a good news department still goes a long way towards people taking a “news talk” station seriously. Basically, make the station more like what it was in the 90’s, but updated for today’s audience. And then, as the “icing on the cake”, they can bring back the jingles.

                      As for Nash FM, there was a discussion about it back when it launched. I’m pretty sure the jingles are not TM – someone on this board suggested that it was Cumulus’ own Benztown Branding, and there was an interview about the station stating that the company had never produced radio station jingles before, so that seems to confirm it wasn’t TM. And having listened today, it’s still the same package they had at launch. TM did recently do a package called “NashRadio”, which may be where the confusion is coming from, but that was for WKKT in Charlotte.
