[Walkerbroadcasting]

Back on Monday June 14th, something went wrong with the feed from the VOA Portuguese studios in Washington, DC to the Botswana shortwave transmitter. The first half hour of the broadcast on 12080kHz went fine but something went wrong at news time. I caught the problem as it happened while Dxing and recording it from Alaska.

At 1730UTC, a pop song faded out and then some news jingle background music played in it’s entirety with no news person, then there was some dead air followed by more news music. Then for 25 minutes, they played a 40 second VOA jingle music bed over and over and over…. and over till the VOA Portuguese feed suddenly reappeared.

‘DX-ING’ can be very interesting. You didn’t need any special equipment either. Before television went digital, TV signals in the US would bounce all over the place, sometimes overpowering your local station!
I remember the local station here having to put up a ‘co-channel’ interference crawl because other stations on the same channel were interfering with their signal.
Luckily, with a VCR I was able to record some of these instances. You would get jingles and promos from stations 1,000 miles away or more. FM would also be affected, and still is. Some of my favorite jingles have come from ‘dx-ing.’

My Best FM DX logs were a 250 watt translator 1250 miles away, a 100 watt LPFM 850 miles away and a 100,000 Watt FM 1550 miles away

My furthest am was 1900 miles, fm was 1400 miles and TV was 1400 miles.
Some of my favorite jingles came from
dx-ing. Years ago I picked up a Spanish fm which had a jingle sung in Spanish. I knew this was not a local station. When the TOH came on I was recording. The music bed started. I knew what jingle it was and was worried it was going to fade out.
Luckily, the signal stayed. As was the case back then, the TOH was sung in English, (even though this one did have a Spanish accent at the end.)
Still one of my favorites.
