David Barras spotted the fact that jingle producer Toby Arnold has died in Dallas aged 76. Bob Dinan has posted a small tribute at http://web.mac.com/geoffbarton/iWeb/Jingle%20Blog/Blog/B058F8C5-1F6D-4EF6-A1B9-79FA92110ED6.html

The memorial service for Toby is tomorrow (Saturday). He was quite a character and will be remembered fondly by many.

It was Geoff and Bob Dinan who first introduced me to Toby Arnold jingles, one of the packages they sent me on reel-tape was for a station called US1. Here`s a montage of those jingles…

            Radio Jingle Pioneer Arnold Dies

Toby Arnold, a member of the Texas Broadcasters Hall of Fame and a pioneer of radio jingles, died Monday, May 8 in Dallas. He was 76.

As sales manager for PAMS, the company that produced station-identification jingle packages for radio and TV stations, Arnold helped create the sound of station jingles that become an unmistakable part of top 40 radio in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s.

Later in his career, Arnold was the head of the marketing arm of the 1980s nostalgia format “Unforgettable,” which aired on over 200 stations in several countries. He also produced the 1980’s and 1990’s audio production library “The Ultimate” with Tom Merriman.

Memorial services are planned in Dallas for Saturday.

Thanks for the above information TC – just wondered whether you (or anyone else reading this) could help me with this query….. as far as I know, Toby Arnold never produced any jingle packages for the UK market or Europe. It appears however, that Toby Arnold & Associates had a great dominance on jingle production in the states. I was wondering if there was any specific reason why TA stopped producing “sung” ID jingles in the late 1980s (or whenever) and concentrated on music/theme production ?
