            I’m a fan of the wierd and obscure…. and here’s a little of both. These are cuts by PAMS for WABC. They include non-takes and alternate versions… so I doubt anyone here has heard these quite in this form.

                            Back in the dark ages, radio stations were not all owned by one or two groups here in the USA. Wilkes-Schwartz Broadcasting purchased WLOB in Portland, Maine. A friend of mine at the local W-S station was sent up there in the mid-seventies to cart up all of the music for their automation system. He said it was weird having this entire facility empty. They had fired all of the jocks and other personnel and he was the only one in this broadcast facility carting up songs in a marathon session for a couple of weeks.

                            In combing through the dust piles at the station, he managed to find the station’s PAMS jingle masters… destined for a dumpster. Needless to say, the tapes ended up here and survive to this day.

                            This was a point in time where I did not know all of the PAMS early series. My how times have changed. So — I learned Series 16 from WLOB’s masters… which makes it memorable to me. I’m sure many of you can remember the first version of packages you heard in syndication.

                            So here for your listening pleasure are some cuts from WLOB’s PAMS purchases. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

                              The vocals certainly sound like they were! :-)

                              The lead sheet I have says TM Century. Your guess is as good as mine. -TC

                              While I can’t tell you the exact date the merger took place, the first package I did for TM Century proper was in late August of 1991-the WMXJ custom that became ‘Good Time Classics’ (it’s the first invoice in my records that bills to ‘TM Century’ and not ‘Century 21’-that’s one way to find out, right?). WPLJ ’91 was still C-21, but the ‘sound’ of the jingles didn’t change with the merger, TM Century used the same C-21 studios until mid 1993.

                                These are fantastic jingles TC. I – like Chris – remember hearing them off-air on good old crackly medium wave!

                                I’m a bit confused by the image song though – I always thought that version of the track was an Alfasound re-work?

                                I’d always been under the impression it was re-recorded for GEM AM’s launch package in 1988 and that Len Groat commissioned it because he loved the original from his time at Metro in the 70s.

                                Does anyone have the definitive story?

                                  While archiving some things from the hard drives (too many gigs — too little time) I came upon WDRC’s Friendly & Free, produced by The Wm B Tanner Company’s Thunder Productions division.

                                      Simple & Free -and- Friendly & Free are practically the same. LAND OF THE FREE was the bicentenial resing of these packages… which they also did versions for the other Thunder packages. Those were sung with Memphis vocals, which don’t hold up to the Dallas sound (or to paraphrase, they suck!). I transferred those bicentenial cuts years ago, but don’t have them in the main library. I’ll have to post examples down the road…

                                          Not only is the vocal sound different, but the accent is noticeably different, too.

                                          Question is . . . why did Tracy Carman have/want THAT cut sung in LA, whilst almost everyone else was having it sung in Dallas!!??

                                            What’s the story?

                                            Funny you should ask the back story……..

                                            I had my first PAMS (CPMG/PAMS, to be precise) cuts sung in May of 1988 in Dallas. At the time, Ben Freedman and Ken R were unable to find two of the backing tracks for the cuts that I wanted (Series 40A WFIL – Brings ’em Back — and — Series 22 More Music, More Often) so I settled on other cuts. [For those who care, I loved WHYN’s 40 cut and WBT’s 22 cut…. they rocked!]

                                            Eventually, the 3-Track 1/2″ master for the Series 22 package fell into my hands… and I had a two versions sung by Ken R’s “North Coast Vocal Group”. Candidly, I was never happy with them. They were breathy and so on… not to my liking.

                                            Fast forward…. A session was being put together by my west coast associate, Don Worsham, to do some Drake-style cuts, acapellas and so on for CPMG/PAMS. I decided to have the cut sung as part of the session as the singers were the best of L.A. The group was put together by Randy Van Horn (yup… go do a google search)… known to cartoon knowers as the group that sang THE FLINTSTONES theme and hundreds of others. How could I resist? The funny thing is… not one singer in the group was under 65 years old.

                                            As it turned out… the cut took on even more meaning because….

                                            1. It was the only PAMS cut done in L.A. during the session (or any session, for that matter — There were supposed to be additional L.A. sessions put together, but it never happened);

                                            2. It was an “A” group of singers singing it w/o that Dallas mid-southwest accent;

                                            3. The price was right (rolling eyes);

                                            4. It was the last CPMG/PAMS cut done before CPMG turned the name “PAMS” and any other rights they had over to Jon Wolfert.

                                            The other cuts done during the session were for a program somewhere in Europe known as JUKE BOX MEMORIES with Ray Anderson — and cuts for Doug Allen. I have the reference master for the session on CD (transferred from my DAT master copy).

                                            Aren’t you sorry you asked?

                                              What happens when you take a classic TM package (in this case, THE BEAT GOES ON) and remix the tracks with electronic effects instead of brass and strings? You get ELECTRONICS II, marketed for a short time by TM Productions. Here are a couple of examples…

                                                  So much better than going to Threads posted in the wrong sections just
                                                  to find yet another “want,want,want” request! :?

                                                  Geeze…. I get those kind of requests in “Private Messages” all the time. As a former President’s wife once said — “Just say no” (which I have been doing a lot lately).

                                                  Changing modes: Here are selected cuts from WNBC’s “Super Boogie” package from Toby Arnold & Associates.

                                                    PAMS wasn’t noted for their MOR packages. In fact, a local Program Director once told me that if you wanted that big MOR sound, Pepper-Tanner was the place to go. That may have been true, but PAMS did produce a few fair attempts at greatness. One was entitled “Stereo Island” — a custom for WKNR-FM in Detroit produced in PAMS Studio “C”. When released as a demo, WIOQ in Philly was the station used, ’cause PAMS thought they were more impressive than good ol’ De-troit.

                                                    Here are a few cuts from the PAMS WKNR-FM Custom — later entitled Stereo Island. Personally, I’d purchase the “snowflakes” cut in a heartbeat.
