Love those rich WXYZ vocals – definitely shows the Dallas sound’s roots in barbershop style harmonies

A lot of the Dallas sound starts with Barbershop. Brian Beck, who sang at TM from its inception ’til his retirement to Colorado a couple of years ago, teaches/consults Barbershop groups. In addition, he’s a member of Barbershop group “Saturday Evening Post” (see http://www.sepquartet.com). Brian also sang at PAMS, Futuresonic, Spot and every other jingle company in Big-D.

Jim Clancy, the well know bass singer, leads “Vocal Majority” – a choral group with its roots in Barbershop.

Do a google search on Brian or/and Jim for more details.

On another note… let’s listen to something different this morning. I’ve uploaded examples of WVNJ Teaneck, New Jersey’s AMERICA’S BEST package from TM Productions. This same package is also used on Sirius’ standards channel.

TM recorded packages for the UK`s GNR (Great North Radio) and GYR (Great Yorkshire Radio) in the early 90`s.

Are these the same music-beds as “Down at the diner” for GNR & GYR in the UK ?

Sorry, David. I don’t know. Do you know what year they were produced? If so, I can look ’em up if they’re here.

Another offering for this morning: FM Ishikawa in Japan had two cuts done at TMCI in June 1990. The first one is from Tanner’s GREAT MUSIC AND YOU (WHYN-FM Custom). The second is from TM’s Crusin’ pkg.

TC………I think they were produced around 1994ish. I`ve actually got a copy of them from the late John Warwick. John presented the breakfast show on GNR for several years and sadly passed away a couple of years ago.

John was kind of enough to send a copy of the master tape from TM of the “down at the diner” jingles. GNR at the time (around 1994ish) promoted a local bar-/restaurant in Washington (Tyne & Wear NOT D.C. !) which had an American diner feel to it. The background music at this bar featured some of the “down at the diner” TM cuts.

Unfortunately, that falls beyond the era of TM tapes here, so I wouldn’t have them. …but obviously, you already do. (grin)

Great stuff TC……….one little observation about these Sundance cuts, a lot of collectors in the UK will recognise the “Smile with us…WPGC” cut from the BBC Radio One package in 1976, “Smile with us in the morning here on Radio 1”

My observation is that the WPGC cut is not only on the Sundance “Back To Basics” demo, it`s also featured on the Music K demo called “Back To Basics”.

I guess this is because of the Chris Kershaw connection with the two companies. Here`s the WPGC cut on the Music K demo………

This is weird…I hear vocalists that I most definitely recognize from Dallas-based jingles of the time, and you claim they’re not there. Someone has to be wrong, and I really don’t think that my ears are deceiving me. Maybe you should take a listen to these again, and maybe run them against some TM or something else from the era.

Two of the cuts I have re-sung for WBT as part of their massive composite that was done by TM/Century in about 1989 or 1990 as part of their “Keeping You In Touch” imaging. I’ve also heard this package on air at WVOC in Columbia, SC back in the mid to late 1990s. Any info you could give on this package would be most welcome
