The NRG (now Fire 107.6) began as the student station for Bournemouth Nerve FM in 1995. After our first NRG (Nerve Radio Group) RSL in 1996 we decided to 'go it alone' and make money for ourselves, rather than for the university.

Not content with one RSL before lobbying the Radio Authority for a new licence for Bournemouth, we ran a second RSL in 1997.

Click below for the “Sound of Station” demo which was sent out to local advertisers and agencies. This was produced late one night at 2CR and was engineered by the talent Steve Cripps.

The station voice was Chris Corley.

I will upload the Sound of Station tape for the ILR licence soon. Hope you enjoy this piece of what I consider radio history!

Actually – I couldn't wait. After the 1997 RSL we applied for – an won – the Bournemouth 'sallie' licence. We won on December 9th 1998 and the transmitter went live on May 26th 1999. Not bad going, being that in that time we built our own studios and offices, hired the staff, wrote the sales and programming strategy…

… and produced the station sound. Which wasn't dissimilar to the Sound of Station tape sent out:

The voice was Greg Marston who did this as a favour. In there somewhere is legendary 2CR jock Tim Butcher.

The jingles were demos from the excellent Bespoke Music. Although never used on-air, as we used Andrew White, I loved these little cuts.

        Enjoy!

And while I am at it – have a click below for the elements we used in the Test Transmissions prior to the station launch on June 26th 1999.

The Test Transmissions, incidentally, were made from EncoDAD plugged directly into the link to the transmitter while walls and ceilings were being built around it.

The station voice was Dave Kelly with a musical logo produced by the great Andrew White.

              An absolute pleasure!

Have only had access to the forums etc for a week or so. Am utterly addicted.

Will post on-going NRG and Fire audio and jingles as and when I can.

              Best

              D

Love the Music 4 Pulse news jingle in that Sound Of Station demo.
I used to listen to NRG all the time when visiting Bournemouth. A great example of how a really small station can sound really big.
