That’ll be a real shame, as we’ve all built up Soundcloud accounts with lists of people we follow, and there’s a lot of good, jingle related audio out there. Mixcloud is of less use, as it won’t accept small audio files.

Back to hosting stuff on our personal webspace/Dropbox , but then you miss out on the liking/following/interaction that Soundcloud offers. I can’t see many people stumping up $10 per month – as you could get Spotify/Netflix etc for less.

Are there any good Soundcloud alternatives that we can start looking at?

              Not good news :^[

I’ve still got loads of files available on 4Shared, but its a swine to use nowadays after they similarly mucked things up. I use dbox extensively for 1:1 transfers but as rightly said, the “interaction” of s/c isn’t there (even if strangely-named women in strange places seem to instantly “follow” any new montages etc within minutes of me posting them… :^0 )

Is there like an audio equivalent of flickr etc but with the “can limit access from the general public” flexibility of s/c?

I would very much doubt that anything like the old internal JM audio file system from years ago would be practical any more in today’s dodgier net environment,
and probably the ancient software would no longer be compatible with present-day Op-Sys, mobile devices, etc, so I don’t know where we turn next.

As much as I like Soundcloud, I’ve always kept my own servers and used them when appropriate just for this very reason. I’ve toyed around with setting up a public audio upload area, but don’t know how well that would work. Thoughts??

As long as you keep the ability to upload very restricted as to avoid licensing issues. You may also run afoul where it comes to airchecks and jingle demos with copyrighted mainstream commercial music in it. I have never heard of the RIAA going after anyone for RIAA music in a jingle demo but there’s always time for a first from those greedy bastards.

I’ve set up a beta site which I’m playing with to allow uploads of audio files. The files must be 64mb or smaller AND in .mp3 format. Once a file is uploaded, I need to manually move it to a public directory for everyone to be able to access it. It’s not perfect, but it’s one way to make sure files don’t disappear along the way.

I’ll release the URL shortly, once I’ve given it a fuller shakedown.

Email from Soundcloud, it looks like free accounts will remain…

Big news! We’re thrilled to announce the launch of SoundCloud Go – our new listener subscription. It’s an exciting step for creators, listeners, and SoundCloud. We’d like to take you through some of the details.

SoundCloud Go is the same SoundCloud you’ve known for years taken to the next level – offering an expanded catalog of tracks and albums that are new to the platform as well as ad-free, offline listening. We’ll also continue to have the existing free ad-supported listening experience. SoundCloud Go is only available in the U.S. for now, but we’ll be rolling it out to other countries later this year.

I got that email overnight also.
Didn’t realise that s/c is (apparently) based in Germany?

I’d say though that TC’s plan would be welcome as a look-ahead, because so many online “cloud” type storage services are closing or going pay-for because the free model just can’t pay and there’s too many of them (just like the earlier internet days of loads of small/medium ISPs being gobbled up etc, and ditto mobile/cell phone “providers”).

I hope though TC that your “archive” servers are all physically disconnected from the net, and any server used for the JM service will be stand-alone – the current “r&ns*mw%r£” wave is getting VERY nasty indeed – a lot of organisations even here in Scotland have been hit recently.

I’ve been playing with the “beta” I set up and invite those who wish to post audio items to feel free to try it out. I’ve restricted the uploads to .mp3 files only for space reasons, and each upload has to be reviewed by me before being available to the general public.

                            The site is jingles.online

                            Thank you,

Happy to report the whole upload process worked well, and my first submission is up http://jingles.online/jinglemad.html
TC, the only thing that I noticed that might need looking at is the confirmation email that I received after uploading the mp3 file.
Looks like a problem with the HTML formatting? The email text was full of HTML tags and not formatted.

I’ve got to go back in and redefine the response email. I knew that’s an issue, but haven’t address it. I was just happy that I got it to generate a confirmation. :)

The “Go” thing is (apparently) only for the USA so far I believe.

TC – are you sure you want this “service” available to the “general public” as such?
Would it not be better to have a “shell” around it so that only JM members (or anyone with a “membership” code of some kind) could upload/download to/from the system – i.e. make it “closed circuit” like the old JM “audio database”?

It’s “moderated” Iain, so post don’t go public unless I move them to the public directory and add them to the listing. If it becomes an issue, I can always adjust things later.

                                            and on “other news providers”.

and whats an “interstitial” ? I though that was something between Ice Ages…

I’m sure most of us on here on Jinglemad don’t create 100% *original* content – therefore not able to participate in the monetization programme – so we shouldn’t hear any ads.

Although after saying that, in our instance it might be(come) possible for the likes of (Jingle) companies to “claim their content” and have ads played before (similar to YouTube) to bring in revenue. As in YouTube’s case, AdBlock Plus could take care of that.

Slightly off topic but website ads are ruining the internet experience for me. It’s like reading a Sunday newspaper on the floor with someone throwing all the pull-out flyers at you from above.

The actual content on a web page may only be 20KB but the ads can add another 6MB so everything takes longer to load and pulls and pushes everything around whilst it does so. I hate it.

AdBlock Plus has saved the day. The only browser that doesn’t work with it yet is Microsoft Edge….
