Well its been an exceedingly good jingley day- thank you! And as promised some of the new Solid Gold GEM AM cuts that will take us into 2014 and our fourth year.
Anyone like JAM’s WYNY ‘New York ’97’ song?
So do I !
https://soundcloud.com/len-groat/song-yny
Sorry to tease – it’s not the 3 minutes+ long one but the nearest we could get – 24 seconds – but it has the ‘feel’ of that great cut.
As always thanks to the JAM team, singers, and Jon who always goes the ‘extra mile’ when he makes new stuff for us.
More soon

“take us into 2014”
Nice time-warp Len – things must be a bit more slow-paced in Portugal ! We’re heading for 201-SIX in Scotland at least :^
A question Len – I have a recent-ish resing of the DJ cut from NY97 – but the vocal sound is far closer to the original WYNY version.
I notice on many (all???) of your SGGAM cuts over a long period of time you seem to have a specific vocal “sound” – do you ask Jon for a particular combo of the singers / scoring / mixing / layering in some way so that SGGAM’s jingles are “consistant” even though they don’t “arrive” all at once as a conventional station package would do?
Just wondered…November 2, 2015 at 7:56 pm #98851radio_bloke

Hi Iain and Radio Bloke:
“I notice on many (all??) of your SGGAM cuts over a long period of time you seem to have a specific vocal “sound” – do you ask Jon for a particular combo of the singers / scoring / mixing / layering in some way so that SGGAM’s jingles are “consistent” even though they don’t “arrive” all at once”
Lots of questions – no easy answer.Jon understands my (sometimes) fussy requests as I’ve known him since 1990 when we first did the Trent/GEM jingles, and I bought my first JAM cut (privately) in 1978. Back in the 90s I often asked Jon for JAM’s 7 voice group for GEM even on packages that were 5 voice – I’ve always believed in being more melodic with both music and jingles.
Next, Jon is VERY patient, with non-musical radio folk or those who want Scottish pronunciation
One factor might be that Jon (ever the perfectionist) STILL gets the original singers for any solos where possible: We recently had Debi Lee (now Rady) and Cheryl Cleavenger sing on cuts first done 20-25 years ago. I suspect this might mean that they also sing in the group on those days (Jon?) which would give a slightly different sound? But I don’t hear any ‘negatives’ where a cut moves away from the original vocal style, and today’s singers sound just as good. We are fortunate to still have Kay and Abby singing + Annagrey is an amazing addition to the JAM sound.
The last factor I can think of is that I always say “I’m prepared to wait for cuts to be done until the optimum vocal group for them are available”.
“It takes time to make things!
The time I have an order IN is much better than the time between orders
Anyway, enjoy a SUPERB mix of the WYNY ‘mini-song’, with not much vocal: I LOVE those strings at 14 secs!

Well our first cut for the new Solid Gold GEM AM package has had 87 plays so it’s the weekend and time for another so let’s see how many this one reaches!

I’m guessing some people may not know the package!?
It’s quite old but we got the ORIGINAL soloist – I LOVE it…

MemberThe cut was obviously inspired by “Da Doo Ron Ron” from The Crystals, but I have NO clue what package it is! Could it possibly be a “True Oldies Channel” custom?

Same here.

MemberSame here too.
I know Johnny Hooper’s Radioscape Music did a custom pack for The True Oldies Channel and that Sean Martin & TM also did cuts for Scott Shannon’s True Oldies as well, but I’ve no idea which JAM pack this new Solid Gold Gem AM pack is from either?

I’m not surprised it’s stumped some of the best ‘jingle minds’ on JM – I’d never heard of the name of the package until 2 months ago.
A clue – it is JAM and it dates from 1988

MemberRed Rose Gold had a version of this
November 13, 2015 at 11:51 pm #98934RobinBlamires
It’s from a syndicated package for “Dick Bartley’s Rock And Roll Oldies Show”. Marcher Gold and Coast Classic (Invicta’s AM station circa 1989) had it.
November 14, 2015 at 9:46 am #98935LenGroat
Well done Robin!
The package was never demo’d but I heard some cuts in the large JAM package made for Essex Radio when Terry Davis was PC that were never aired.
We’ve bought some others from it too so will upload those soon!

Is there an echo in here?

MemberAlfa demo – Coast Classics – Seems to be a mix of JAM / alfa tracks – There the definite note of one two three four two two three four Alan Fawkes in there

(…”echo echo ECHO …in Indianapolis….” for those old enough to remember…) :^)

Ha- sorry mb, didn’t see your message
November 16, 2015 at 1:12 pm #98961LenGroat
MB: thanks for the ‘Coast Classics’ package – so catchy I woke up singing their logo – could not get it out of my head!
They are all Alfa singers, Steve Butler is very audible on MANY of them + yes Alan Fawkes in the vocal group too
Original Alfa tracks (probably Allan Fawkes) up to 4.12, then the same singers over JAM material up to 6.12. Then more Alfa with some Steve England sono.
But they did not get this cut which is also from “Rock And Roll Oldies Show”

If you followed the ‘News jingle’ topic you’ll have heard this already BUT time to post it on the GEM topic, as no one has yet spotted a subtle difference
Is it actually the ’55 KUSA’ melody logo…?
November 21, 2015 at 4:46 pm #99010DuncanNewmarch
MemberI’m a sucker for any news jingle that starts with a timp, really nice. Did you get a version without the “news”?
November 21, 2015 at 4:55 pm #99011LenGroat
Hi Duncan – yes Jon kindly made many mixes for us ! I’ll add a couple of the variants
As the News jingle can follow a fade end , or STOP end song, I think the full tymp drum intro is the best way to start a news cut – such as JAM’s various Radio 1 News cuts.
The superb strings have been pushed up in the mix + have you spotted the subtle difference with the original?
November 22, 2015 at 5:50 pm #99021Jeffrey T. Mason
MemberSubtle difference…you mean other than cutting out one note?
November 24, 2015 at 12:05 pm #99031LenGroat
Hi Jeffro
“you mean other than cutting out one note?”
Well actually you are the FIRST to notice the subtlety! We only have the notes for ’55 – U – S – A’ : we tried chopping the ‘K’ before we ordered the cut and Jon then did a proper job on it. Now it matches ‘Solid Gold GEM AM’ and the singers sang those logo notes. But on top of that we extended the tymp at the front to make room for a vocal + the string run is now more noticeable.
Duncan: Yes we did a version or two without ‘News’ – the second one might be used long term to extend the life of the jingle – OR we could ask JAM to sing a ‘weather’ end on it, to have a matching weather jingle
November 29, 2015 at 6:49 pm #99083DuncanNewmarch
MemberI think I prefer it without the “news” but they’re all great, love a good news in
