One of the things that could have been asked about to Johnny Beerling yesterday in Yorkshire.
Hopefully they’ll put the audio online soon with a question from one Hirsty (jingle related) catching the controller out.
September 16, 2015 at 6:31 pm #98476UKJinglesMemberDon’t tease Robin..What was the question ? LOL
I’m waiting for the video from the Steve England Interview to “appear” from LAST Summer still!!September 18, 2015 at 4:17 pm #98479RobinBlamiresThe Johnny Beerling interview can be heard below.
And David Lloyd pretty much nails Adrian Juste at the start.

September 19, 2015 at 10:55 am #98486LenGroatGood gosh ~ Johnny Beerling sharing the ‘Solid Gold GEM AM’ topic!
I’ve not heard all the interview yet but do recall meeting him at BH in the late 70s, and he’s a very nice guy. He took me into Tony Blackburn’s studio when Tony was on afternoons. David Lloyd was not the only one who applied for a job on Radio 1 (in its great days) David applied in 1986 but I think just about every one of the dj’s at Radio Trent in the late 70s had applied, (except Steve Merike who’d been there briefly in ’71 in the ‘Now Sound’ era). Dale (suavely) sent his audition tape on a breakfast tray with roses to one of the female producers after finding where she was staying at a hotel! Ironically of course years later Radio 2 ASKED HIM to do a show once he’d made it on tv.
So, back to our topic, and ANOTHER ‘Magic’ cut – this time JAM’s “The Magic is the Music” cut 6. With his usual eye for detail, Jon had Mike Collier the original soloist re-do his part – it’s timeless and We LOVE it… Enjoy!
September 20, 2015 at 9:47 am #98494IainJohnston“Magic Music 4, cut 8. It is PERFECT to go into ANY song with a weak/quiet intro as the cross-fade is imperceptible”
I heard this cut on-air this morning Len (yes, over FORTY listeners, regardless of what’s said on a certain US-newspaper-corporate owned UK /Radio forum…!)
BUT it didn’t really work into “Born Free” by Matt Monroe or whoever – the soft drumbeat end cross-fade clashed.
However – did Jon give you a mix without that, maybe just with the excellent soft-fade vocals and/or not with any soft non-beat instrumentation under that “slides & blends into the song intro” ending? (…”old timers” think PAMS 40/41 “Sunburst” on the demo into “War” by Edwin Collins…) ?
September 20, 2015 at 2:45 pm #98495LenGroatHi Iain
re: the ‘Magic’ cut : “it didn’t really work into “Born Free” – the soft drumbeat end cross-fade clashed /did Jon give you a mix without that, maybe just with the excellent soft-fade vocals?” I don’t think it clashed competely – tempo wise it was ok, and yes John was most generous with various forms of the end of the cut BUT remember some dj’s are great at personality radio, others great at flow/mixing – and our Sunday 9-12 presenter is the former – she’s been at it for nearly 30 years in Irish and UK radio.
I suspect we have more jingles/versions available to the team than ANY other UK station – but at the end of the day the ‘system’ brings in the song after a jingle, not a human being. I tried to do a ‘screen shot ‘ of our jingles list but with mixes/ personal cuts there are over 200 and they wont ‘fit’ !
We are fortunate that three ‘JingleMadders’ also on our team have bought their own jingles to use and spend a lot of time making it flow – take a bow James Pearson, Graham Collins and John Palin, + Stephen Wells is a recent convert to ‘personal cuts’ (Do It Again & We Love You) and he’s going to order 2 more for his retirement in October!
As regards the number of listeners, our system shows that some links are to APP’s and other distributors, so it’s actually higher but ironically we don’t want to grow TOO big because of PPL and PRS costs – we have no ads – pay costs ourselves + via donations
We have yet more transition cuts on order ~ so please keep listening !
Here’s some audio !
September 20, 2015 at 8:01 pm #98497IanFDoes JAM do the jingles for Serenade Radio too?

I did the (very) old Tanner resings and JAM did the JAM cuts
September 20, 2015 at 9:16 pm #98499IainJohnstonI caught a couple of what sounded like PAMS Smart Set on Serenade – and the music isn’t all as “old” and “fuddy-duddy” as
some other Forums would have people think!Haven’t heard P-T ones ? What packages ?
September 20, 2015 at 9:30 pm #98500PKMemberDidn’t BBC Radio 2 have some Pepper Tanner cuts for a while in 1968? I have no idea what the name was of the pack that was resung for Radio 2 in 68 but wondered if they might be the very old Tanner jingles Serenade Radio has?
September 20, 2015 at 9:59 pm #98501IainJohnstonR2 in 1968/9 had the P-T “Easy Listening” package…

Embedded at home.recnet.com/soundcloudSeptember 22, 2015 at 8:35 pm #98505UKJinglesMemberYou (TM/iJingles) did a marvellous job with those Sean..
Even the vocals sound like Pepper Tanner!
Can anyone do a montage of The JAM cuts please?
I might have to take a listen it sounds very Saga/Primetime Radio style……..September 22, 2015 at 9:49 pm #98506IanFThanks for posting iJingles. Wonderful cuts
September 23, 2015 at 10:05 am #98509IainJohnstonThanks for posting those Sean :^)
I’m gobsmacked – I haven’t heard “new” resings of some of these in over 40 years!
And they DO “sound good” to the Serenade “brief” – and probably actually “better sung” than many of the original-era re-sings, for those who have never heard the late 1960s/very early 70s “Memphis group” vocal stuff.P-T Good Thing (originally Odyssey 70…), Total Entertainment (?), and the old KBIG (Avalon island / Los Angeles? “Your Station Across the Sea”- can’t remember the package name) and a couple more I used to have in maroon boxes long ago are beyond recall now.
I take my hat off to whoever chose these cuts, and to who did the retro-engineering of the vocals – someone has a VERY in-depth knowledge of “classic” (?!?) P-T :^)
September 23, 2015 at 3:28 pm #98510PKMemberThere was a dodgy unauthorised resing of “Your Station Across The Sea” used on the old Radio NorthSea International! Probably the only time that jingle was used on the terrestrial airwaves over here?
I agree with everyone else, marvellous vocals on these Sean, did Greg do the vocal arrangement? Well done to the vocal team and everyone involved.
October 17, 2015 at 9:52 am #98681LenGroatJust catching up with our ‘borrowed’ topic and great to hear the cuts from our ‘sister’ station – I LOVE the ‘Frank Sinatra’ cut…
Ian F : Serenade does indeed have a JAM cut that is a softer one designed to fit for the 6 hours a week we share programmes – Sundays 6pm to midnight – and it will have more soon.
Meanwhile it’s a case of ‘JAM yesterday, JAM tomorrow and JAM today’ as with all the excitement over the Tony B. jingles I realise I forgot to post the last of the new cuts from our last JAM package.
https://soundcloud.com/len-groat/turn-us-on-1960s-long-m-to-m
I got this for the original GEM-AM in 1990 but the lyric needed to be re-sung for Solid Gold GEM AM – I LOVE it – classic JAM, + it breaks into a ‘neat’ short version. ! Hope you love it too…
JAM tomorrow – I’ll soon be able to post our NEXT package which is designed for our third anniversary on 5 November – yes we keep on Jammin’…
October 18, 2015 at 2:31 pm #98683PKMemberI remember the original GEM AM version of this jingle Len, a fave of mine when I used to listen in on 945 kHz! Plus all those commercials for Ilkeston Co-Op and Safeseal Windows too lol!
November 1, 2015 at 12:05 am #98835Sean MartinMemberAre you ready for some modern nostalgia?
This montage is a special, collectors edition of the work iJiNGLES produced for internet radio station, Solid Gold GEM AM (including a few tracks for presenters on the station), on the occasion of their 3rd birthday in November 2015.
http://www.solidgoldgem.am
It contains some of the “off the track” bits you don’t normally hear once the productions leave the recording studio and mixes you may not have heard.
All the tracks were originally produced for famous AM/FM radio stations of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, re-scored and resung for SGGAM, thanks (with only a couple of exceptions) to Tracy Carman @ The Media Preservation Society, without who’s help and dedication, many of these studio tracks – on magnetic tape – would have long been lost either to time, or to the dumpster.
http://www.jingles.org
You can see the “behind the scenes”, 5-voice vocal session for the finale song in this montage over on Youtube,
http://www.youtu.be/XEsf43-yiqw
The song was originally produced for radio station WMAQ in Chicago.
Credit goes to Tom Cusic for recording the video rushes.
Tribute also goes to the singers (see photo) Greg, Kay, Bruce, Annagray and Jeff.
Finally, listening on headphones is recommended.
Thanks SGGAM and happy 3rd birthday!November 1, 2015 at 9:11 am #98836UKJinglesMemberWhat an excellent montage of some of TM’s (and Pepper Tanner’s) Greats!!
November 1, 2015 at 9:42 am #98837IainJohnstonSean – my ISP refuses to find that tooyube video link!
Nice to hear all that TM audio for SGGAM in one place now!
November 1, 2015 at 10:04 am #98838pvankleiMemberThanks Sean for sharing this montage and very nice video.
@Len: Excellent choice of TM and Pepper Tanner cuts.November 1, 2015 at 10:12 am #98839LenGroatSean!
Thank you – that compilation is a great reminder of what you and iJingles did for us at SGGAM. And as we enter our third year it’s definitely timely to THANK…
…. TC, Greg, Kay, Bruce, Annagray and Jeff, you, the Media Preservation Society, and all the folks at TM.
I’ve told this story before but it bears repeating: when I went to Dallas every year I was invited to stay with Jackie and Tom – but went off each day to JAM to record the jingles with Jon and his team! Jackie did lead on most of the GEM-AM cuts as for me she was THE ‘voice’ of PAMS and earlier JAM on some of my favourite packages. Any ‘rivalry’ between these Dallas companies was a ‘family’ rivalry – and Jackie and Tom never even gave me demos of any TM material to try to ‘tempt’ me! I felt privileged to stay with them and inevitably we ‘talked jingles’ sometimes – they were very patient with this 100% non-musical person. So it was good to eventually be able to get some of the TM jingles from that era (THANKS) some of which I was not even aware of until JingleMad started!
I’m currently doing a third anniversary show on the station and it’s been a frantic week – but later today I’ll start to unveil some of our NEW jingles
Len
November 1, 2015 at 10:23 am #98840GrahamCollinsWow, terrific stuff. Thank you Sean. I’ve never heard Len’s wonderful song in full before – a true goose bump moment….
Agree with Iain, the web-link for the YouTube video looks odd and refuses to play.
November 1, 2015 at 11:01 am #98842Sean MartinMemberDoh ! Sorry ’bout that.
This’ll get you there . . . .
