I hear a little taste of “(I’ve Been) Searchin’ So Long” from Chicago.
August 23, 2015 at 11:50 am #98323LenGroatJeffro ‘T’: I think you GOT it with Chicago! But the way JAM wrote/played it makes it a much stronger riff..
And I think maybe Chicago did base it on “Strawberry Fields” Robin?
As regards jingles being ‘influenced’ by songs – any guesses which song cut 1 from ‘Magic Music’ was based on ?
https://soundcloud.com/len-groat/jam-magic-music-1-for-solid-gold-gem-am
If I’m right it was a top 10 in the US but only Top 50 in UK – so maybe not an easy one for UK Jinglemadders?
August 23, 2015 at 12:01 pm #98324GrahamCollinsSoundcloud is not working at the moment – nothing will actually play……

August 23, 2015 at 2:59 pm #98326PKMemberSoundcloud is working ok on my iPhone now though it has been a little temperamental over the last 12 hours or so!
August 23, 2015 at 4:40 pm #98327GrahamCollinsSoundcloud is still refusing to play anything for me…… Maybe they have finally decided that unless you actually own the copyright on material you can’t play it. This has been bubbling away in the background for ages.

It should be back to normal now – they have been having issues.

So ‘normal service resumes’ on the ‘Solid Gold GEM AM 2015 jingles’ topic
How is this for a JAM classic – brilliantly re-sung, and re-sono’d !?
September 8, 2015 at 3:22 pm #98414LenGroatWith the JAM ‘Magic cuts being very topical here is another from that great series of packages.
Back in June I listened to every package overandover – I realised how WELL they worked with music- great intros + a variety of endings. This cut is from Magic Music 4, cut 8. It is PERFECT to go into ANY song with a weak/quiet intro as the cross-fade is imperceptible. We also had just a ‘front end’ mix with station name which works very well.

My verdict: brilliant vocals matching the originals + still crisp and fresh for a 1986 package!
September 12, 2015 at 7:02 pm #98436ratnobMemberI actually like a lot more of the 70s PAMS stuff Like Clyde, Shaft, etc than the 60’s stuff but maybe its an age thing
Just noticed your comment. I LOVE the ‘Ignitors’, for example, and ‘Changes’ and other 70s packages produced when PAMS was spiralling into decline. It was, perhaps, a transitional phase when the big, brassy, quirky cuts of the 60s were being transformed into more functional jingles, and a greater emphasis on the music.
Glad it’s not just me who loves that period.
September 12, 2015 at 7:44 pm #98437Tracy CarmanMemberI loved the vocal sound in PAMS Series 40 ‘changes’ in that seventies PAMS era. They had a few things I also liked before their spiral into oblivion.

I agree Tracy…….
The BBC Radio One (and Two) 1972 and 1974 Packages had a great vocal sound (in my opinion better than the 1960’s sound!)September 13, 2015 at 4:52 pm #98448IainJohnstonWell, since Pete has said it – I’d better drag these out again!

A comment regarding the various remarks above ref PAMS Series 40 Changes, 42 Ignitors..
A great many USA stations that chose Series 43 cuts ALSO combined them in composites with Series 42 (42A usually…) but there’s no “42” in the Radio One bundle although the “theory” behind the 2 packages seems “similar” and the cuts seemed to have “worked well” together on-air. As MB was saying too – Clyde/Grabber and other “non-series” cuts often got bundled with 42/43, WLS and others. And a couple of Series 40 items appeared with the 1971 Radio One PAMS custom (after the “experiments” with Pepper-Tanner…)
As for the PAMS “spiralling…, I think Series 43 was the absolute pinnacle of their Top 40 packages – sadly 44 just seemed like a “re-do”…

I thought that the “Across The UK” Radio One PAMS Custom package was good as well (Must of cost a bomb..and I never heard it syndicated!!)
The worst “experiments” was that awful package by Audio Producers which thankfully I was too young at the time to remember apart from the “Jimmy Young” Jingle which carried right up the 1980’s be it badly edited for Radio Two!BTW….Sorry Len that we’ve “hi-jacked” your topic temporarily!!
September 13, 2015 at 8:29 pm #98451IainJohnston“…the “Across The UK” Radio One PAMS Custom package was good … never heard it syndicated!! “
I’m sure someone said last year that JMW now had it “available for re-sing” – my apologies if I’ve got that wrong…
and it sounds like this… (and I’m sure would be “even better in stereo…”)https://soundcloud.com/allthebestjingles/wixy1360-radioone-1973-pams-acrosstheukwma
I don’t know if the 1971 PAMS Radio One custom’s tracks have ever been “recovered & restored”, but one cut I know for certain was re-sung years ago for a DJ at Swansea Sound…
“The worst “experiments” was that awful package by Audio Producers which thankfully I was too young at the time…”
Some of us were already old enough to know it was …uuurrrggghhh… when we heard it at the time – and considering it was produced by ex-Heller Corporation people who had done some less-edgy customs that year for WHAM Rochester NY, KIRO Seattle WA, WKRC Cincinatti OH, and KFMB San Diego CA, someone at AP must have thought 1970 BBC Radio One was a bit more “hip” than the Jimmy Young Show…

Yes, apologies (again) Len , but you know how we all like to “hang” wandering sub-topics on to “main threads”… :^)
September 15, 2015 at 9:00 pm #98464Jim DonahueTotally agree that the Audio Producers package was the worst ever for Radio 1.
I was also too young at the time – do any of the “old enough” JMers have any surviving audio of these dreadful cuts in use on air? I would be curious to hear if they still sound as bad as when listened to in isolation……….September 16, 2015 at 12:24 am #98465gameswizardMember(Some of) them AP tracks sound like they’re from 70s porno movies.
September 16, 2015 at 12:30 am #98466LenGroatGood gosh you HAVE hi-jacked the GEM topic – a veritable swarm of disconnected posts and audio – but ALL enjoyable.
(I must admit liked some cuts from the Audio Producers – “Radio Wunnnn ~ Reee mem Berrrssss” and a few others fitted with the rather messy/awkward pop music of the early 70s that Radio 1 played, but they all do basically sound like demos recorded in a hurry.)
I did ask a little birdy at Dallas over a year ago if the “Across The UK” Radio One PAMS package was available – it IS ! But I’ve since got distracted by dozens of great JAM cuts: the KYGO packages hold some real gems that work well with lots of musical styles apart from country, the re-sings for CBS FM hold many tempting cuts, and of course there are the WMGK ones as you’ve heard! So WHERE do we go from here? So many packages/such a small pension!
Well the (ever patient) JMW is making us a new News jingle for our 3rd anniversary that I’m excited about – we’ve just ordered re-sings of cuts from an ultra obscure JAM package that I don’t think (?) has been sung for over 25 years (!) We’re getting “the next best thing” to the “New York ’97” song + some of our team are buying their own cuts for their shows – that’s MY kind of dj!
But back to audio, and a cut from our recent mini-package that started life as a custom for Metro Radio (years after I left) I believe it was SO over-played the PD removed it from the studio for a while. It ended up in the ‘Metro Line’ package for the USA.
Here’s OUR version – sung 20 ish years later – with an added shout at the front.
I LOVELOVELOVE it….

and it REALLY comes across on-air….
September 16, 2015 at 8:52 am #98467GrahamCollinsThe Audio Producers package recorded for Radio 1 is dated April 1970. Like Jim, I have never heard these cuts on an air-check to give them any context.
September 16, 2015 at 10:37 am #98468IainJohnstonGraham, I was still at school when the R1 AP package was on-air, so never heard much of it in-context, although the “TrfcNoos” rushed-vocals traffic cut always seemed more familiar since heard at tea-time; and of course no transistor radios allowed in school, so the lunchtime “Radio 1 Club” was a mystery…
I must confess to having had an in-the-clear 3&3/4 IPS dub of the package (including most of the “instrumental versions” with the dodgy synth work, including the utterly dire news etc “sounders” that never aired (…no wonder…) ) in my hands not long after.
No wonder the 1971 PAMS custom that followed sounded so damn good!
Len – good to see you’ve chosen a cut from the much-under-rated but elegantly-produced 1994 Metro custom, and then used on various other UK stations especially others in the Yorkshire Radio Network such as Hallam, Viking…
A THIRTY-cut, very-“jingles for grown-ups’ stations” effort from JAM – just when the USA started its long decline towards “6-cuts, 200 mixouts” stuff;
a shame – but anyone looking for Personal Cuts that have a strong sound but with loads of variation should still re-visit the KYKY demo, or better still the Metro FM original.Metroline cut #23 has a funky bass-line thats a work of art in its own right!
https://soundcloud.com/allthebestjingles/jam-metroline-cut23
Looking forwards to hearing the new stuff you’ve got in the pipeline, Len – and would you like your thread back now? :^)
September 16, 2015 at 3:43 pm #98471LenGroatYes I’d like the thread back please or else my ‘Government driver’ will be going through England/Scotland border control to see you! (Topical qiup that makes no sense in North America)
Thank you for the extra (snazzily presented) audio of that lively cut!
I realised some JingleMadders may not know the cut in question in its original form – so here it comes!
https://soundcloud.com/len-groat/jam-metro-line-for-metro-radio
I can hear Chris Kershaw’s voice leading the ‘Metro FM’ part – there are some good nuances in the vocals, and the vocal parts go in unpredictable directions (that’s my non-musician way of describing it). I’m also delighted to say that with the added ‘Yes’ I like our version even MORE! Well done Jon/ JAM & the singers….
September 16, 2015 at 4:02 pm #98473LenGroatJust noticed! Reference Iain’s comment: “Across The UK” Radio One PAMS Custom package was good … never heard it syndicated!! I’m sure someone said last year that JMW now had it “available for re-sing” …..
LOOK to the RIGHT – at what that nice Sean Martin has posted!! And it’s one of the BEST cuts!
