As soon as I heard Chris Stevens was involved I knew TM would feature somewhere in this but not in the way I expected !
January 8, 2013 at 11:36 am #88023DevawebMemberI suspect that Len might prefer these…
January 8, 2013 at 11:49 am #88024LenGroatYeahhh… Chris….. “you know me so well ” !
I do indeed like that distinctly different vocal mix, so for me the jingles for Smooth 70s ‘hit the button’.
Who are the singers for that sound ?
ps
I very much like your Phuket Island Radio tracks/sings too.

Very nice sound…I particularily like the female bias on the vocal. Shows quite a versatility of TM to have differing vocal groups and styles depending on format.
January 8, 2013 at 6:32 pm #88034muffyYes THAT is a TM jingle … And Wow i love them On smooth 70’s
January 13, 2013 at 3:20 pm #88186SeanyNot liking the ones on the Smooth 70s Station, I thought they may have been Dave Langer, for TM they they certainly don’t sound good. Not as some Jam jingles would have been.
January 13, 2013 at 3:29 pm #88187UKJinglesMemberSound like the same singer as the original “The Bee” cuts…..Not very 70-ish would of sound better with the full TM Group (to make it sound 70’s style!)

I am sure most of us like the Professional Sound of the Dallas Singers
instead of the UK onesI also suspect if you played the 2 Sets of jingles to a focus group of non Jingle Collectors you would also come to the same conculsion
But of course if the whole exercise was to make a revenue stream for the Group I guess it does not matter how the station sounds

I like your use of the word ‘professional’ ~ regardless of our favoured companies, as well as us, listeners can recognise jingles that do not ‘sound’ professional, and I feel jingles with solo singers are more likely to sound amateur, more like karaoke?
It does sadly seem the income from the jingles for the main service was the primary goal?
Given that Smooth’s flagship station had a 1.4% reach in London in 2012 (compared to BBC Radio 2’s 12.1%) maybe these jingles will not be used for very long before it goes through a more drastic re-brand/ re-name, as I don’t see 1.4% as viable with advertisers?
I wonder how much Mark Goodier leaving Smooth is connected with the use of a different jingle company? I do believe he owns or runs Wise Buddah, but these new jingles appeared very quickly after his departure, so must have been planned before?
January 14, 2013 at 11:24 am #88207LenGroatJust to clarify…. Smooth’s London station had a 1.4% SHARE… not reach !
January 14, 2013 at 11:38 am #88208MarcMannetjeInteresting Len, we did a survey in 2002 about the adaption of ‘modern jingles’ compared to the old fashion 7 voice vocals by our audience, and discovered that after playing the ‘solo voice’ tracks, the burn out point was reached much earlier than with the choir sung jingles.
The best way I think to go, is to produce well sung multi vocal cuts with some solo punctuations. They last, stand out, get the message across AND connect your stations name with a positive emotion in the mind of the listeners.

” Ahh. Thats why Mark Goodier works at BBC Radio Two now then!! “
Ahh yes, he did some fill-in work VERY soon after leaving Smooth, yet I thought he said he was leaving to concentrate on his business?
Surely if Radio 2 need some REAL dj’s (which I believe they do, as opposed to ‘tv personalities’) they should get Simon Bates? He was MASSIVE on Radio 1, is perfect for the R2 demographic, and as the BBC forgave ‘pirate’ Johnny Walker and took him back, they could take Simon back?
Plus Ken Bruce IS getting on now?
That (plus a new+classic JAM jingle package) would be tickety boo !
January 14, 2013 at 2:04 pm #88214GrahamCollinsSimon Bast@rd is 65, whilst Ken Bruce notches up a mere 61, but yes I agree he is getting on…… my nerves.

Ahh.. but surely as regards VOICES .. Simon sounds like your uncle (about 50) and Ken like your granddad (about 70 ?) ??
+ all they have to do is sing a ‘Two’ on the end of the ♫ ♪♫’Sy-mun Bates, the Gol -Den How’wer, on Ray Dee O Wun’ !♫ ♪♫
January 14, 2013 at 2:17 pm #88218mbMemberI too understood that solo vocals burn a package a lot quicker, but used to accent they sound fantastic. The JAM Fresh package and TM country cuts feature some sgreat single vocals. So I’m for a package which plays around. My favourite piccadilly Sue manning Package had Girl, Guy and Full Group vocals for every cut for the “heart of the North west” package and it’s something that Reelwrld also do really well with on packages like the one they did for the Revolution.
As for Simon Bates on Radio Two – Len I think that “Radio 2” ship has sailed a long time ago – Putting Simon Bates on Mid mornings with Golden Hour resings would be like dragging the station back 20 years. I don’t think that radio 1 old old old boys are the people to whom Radio 2 should always be looking. I think the new POTP jingles very cleverly put more modern resing on that people anticipated – and they sound great and fresh.
January 14, 2013 at 3:09 pm #88224IainJohnstonMember“Piccadilly… Sue manning Package…., “heart of the North west”
Someone asked me about that recently – and not being from the pre-internet-era TSA of “261” I really didn’t know if I knew what it sounded like (and it appears not to be the “friends in the Northwest” Alfasound custom).
For the benefit of those who like me who may never have heard it back then, is anyone able to post a brief montage of what the package sounded like please? (Not worried about audio quality, just the mystery of the “content”!)
January 14, 2013 at 5:20 pm #88227muffyMaybe Radio 2 should take on Peebles now that smooth have moved him .. His quiet Storm feature on radio one was great ..And he can talk about sport in detail ..

Simon must of been only in his mid 20’s when he was doing early morning on Radio Two….
He must of been the youngest presenter on the network!! ) -
