MemberBeing a member of the “over a certain age” club, I’m not really into Blogging, Facetube, Youbook or twatter but I must say your carefully chosen words have made it feel like you have taken the whole JM community with you!
Outstanding!
Having enjoyed all of your audio clips to date, I had the feeling I was hearing the Michael Parkinson show.
You share the ability to ask the question, then have the respect to keep quiet while the “guest” responds.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to the next updateFebruary 18, 2014 at 10:34 pm #93426PPM
Thank you for posting these updates from your trip. The audio tour of the JAM vault is superb. The sense of anticipation at the start when Jon is rattling his keys to unlock the door is incredible. I am still thinking about those 92 reels of Radio 1 and 2 jingles you saw.
Interesting revelation that sometimes the client stations got the first generation master copy of the package and JAM hold the second generation copy. I wonder how many of those first generation tapes no longer exist?

Great stuff Geoff – thanks for posting.

MemberAuthorHello, funsters.
I spent more than 13 hours at JAM today, more than four of them watching a session. I have some more relevant audio, including conversations with JMW and with some of the singers.
But it’s almost 2:30am and I need to sleep.
So here, briefly, are three items:
1- photographs taken today around the JAM studios:
https://www.facebook.com/bob.dinan.9/media_set?set=a.10152261667954804.1073741830.721959803&type=12 – a surreal audio moment:
We are driving in JMW’s car to the recording session at JAM, though we get delayed by a truck which is parking (badly). We are listening on the car stereo to KLUV. The top-of-the-hour cut kicks in and it is by JAM. So here I am listening to a jingle made by the man sitting next to me which he is listening to too. I ask him an obvious question:
http://geoffbarton.co.uk/files/Audio/Bob-in-Dallas/BID12-JMW-Car.mp33 – a teaser:
In tomorrow’s audio posts, I’ll include a long discussion JMW and I have about a jingle made by one of his favourite jingle writers, Dick Hamilton, who was best known as a writer for Heller and, later, TM. Take a listen to this beautiful cut which you’ll hear us analysing tomorrow. Once again, it will feature JMW sitting at a piano trying to help me understand aspects of the chords:

MemberAuthorOkay, blog updated. Here’s what you get:
JMW and I sitting in the control room to studio B. The singers are singing and he explains to me about the different feel of 5- v 7-voice groups. We go into the studio to meet the singers. In the break, I am able to chat to two of the vocalists – Cheryl Cleavington and Les Farrington. In the evening we sit at the piano in studio A and JMW demonstrates some of the musical concepts we’ve been hearing.
Enjoy.

The audio clips are fascinating Geoff…especially where Jon talks candidly about how it all works. Love the session bits as well! Thanks for sharing!

The 20 minute interview is really good! It explains a fair bit about the current state of the radio industry, it’s relevance with current young audiences, and a good dissection into vocal harmonies and so on.

Thanks again. This series of very personal interviews is the perfect start to JAM’s 40th year – a fascinating insight into the construction of melody and vocals – we never stop learning…

Thanks for all the interest and kind comments.

A “Big Thank You!” in order from every one of us for the whole “running commentary” of your trip Geoff!
PS – I take it you were thoroughly searched by “Security” on leaving “The Vault” to ensure you hadn’t anything tucked away inside your socks etc!

Actually been downloading your pics (almost in realtime – 2:55pm UK time) right now for JP in Sussex- are you OK with me passing them on to anyone else who “hasn’t got Faceb**k”?

MemberWelcome home Geoff. I have loved the past week and catching up with the latest episode of ‘Jam Pilgrimage’. I shall miss these daily updates. What a treat it has been for all of us. A very big thank you to Jon for giving us such a fantastic insight into the inner workings of Jam and the jingle business. I know every fan will be in jingle heaven listening to those anecdotes. It might have been Geoff there in person , but all of us felt we were actually there too.

Welcome back to Blighty Geoff…again, thanks to your good self and Jon for some great audio and an extensive insight into the inner workings of JAM!
…so you didn’t get to visit TM Studios in the end?

Absolutely amazing this Geoff. What a great insight and, yes, hearing the Radio One cut on the magical piano was awesome. I’ve never heard anything quite like that. It could easily be turned into a documentary. Fab stuff.

Hello J-Madders
I’m sitting at Dallas Airport having spent 3 hours talking with Jonathan Wolfert this morning at the ‘magic piano’ in Studio A. That in itself is a privilege.
I’ve recorded interviews about logos, the Radio One/Two era, the JAM song, and other stuff. Throughout lots of it he illustrates points by playing the piano. I think you’ll think everything, except my interviewing skills and the audio quality, is pretty fascinating.
I’ll edit the material on the plane and post tomorrow.
I’m hugely grateful to Jon for giving up so much time (he’s headed back to JAM Towers to work on stuff, having dropped me at the airport).
Watch this space. I think you’re going to love this final phase of audio.

MemberAuthorHere you go, funsters, the final stage of Bob’s Dallas Pilgrimage.
John Wolfert and I sit at the piano in studio A and I record our discussions about radio logos, the BBC years, the JAM song, and how to write a jingle (with reference to the NY97 Song).
Here’s where we were:
