I’m sure this will have been answered somewhere on here before – but this fab chart bed from ’88… was it a custom for R1?

If not, who was it originally done for?

If it WAS a custom, did it ever get put into another JAM package?

And is anyone aware of any resings for other stations?

It was definitely a custom, along with some of the other “Radio 1 FM” custom jingles in late 1988. There were also variations on the “UK Top 40” sonic-logo or so to say within the set, though not all were used. One was adapted by Gary Davies to count down the American Top 30 and UK Album chart, up until the 1990 custom set.

Was that the actual edit used on the UK Top 40? Only asking as eagle-eared listeners would’ve noticed a 1990 cut creep in towards the end (“1m Watts of Music Power… Radio 1 FM”).

Robin’s correct about the different mixouts: there was an instrumental sonic-only ident, a version which sung “The UK Chart Countdown” in place of “The UK Top 40”, and there was a really nice version which reached a crescendo, used after the number one into the pips just before Annie Nightingale came on, with the end vocal “Radio 1” then the sonic to close.

There were also different versions of the theme which (to my knowledge) weren’t used at all. Don’t think I have them anymore but one of the 3 themes in particular was almost as good as this, which I think is perhaps the most iconic Top 40 bed they’ve ever used. Great work from JAM.

In fact, the cut I mentioned above, I’ve found… remember dubbing it from a DAT at GWR Bristol, but since lost all other mixouts!

Also, this must’ve been part of a custom Top 40 package, as I recall the shorter sung IDs were also supplied as instrumentals, which you don’t normally get with re-sings.

Also, slightly off-topic, here’s an unused news headlines bed from 1987:

Was a similar one used on the Simon Mayo breakfast show?

Hi Dan. This was definitely used on air and have been after this since I first heard it in summer ’87. Adrian John would use it to read the heads before firing off Best Show #5 up to 7 o’clock. Mayo continued to use it I would guess until 1990.

I stand corrected and now you’ve both mentioned it, there’s a hazy memory coming back to me!

Cheers Robin – I suspected so. Would be interested to hear if anyone’s got airchecks of the variations being used.

                    Yeah – I think someone’s had a go at a mock-up there and accidentally slipped a 1FM cut in!

                    Great post Dan!

I’m going to stick my head over the parapet and say that I don’t think JAM made that (the news bed- I remember Mike Smith using it on the trail for his new breakfast show), but it sounds like somebody trying to sound like JAM if you know what I mean… but it’s too simple

I would like to ask about the stingers used from 1988 to 1992. They were used in between the records. Unfortunately the links that were here are dead. Does anybody have a copy?
