Can anyone remember hearing any of the following Radio London jingles played on Radio Birmingham in the late 1970s? They were from Radio London’s 1976 Amphonic Music package. I was living in the south east at the time but had a canal holiday in the midlands sometime in the late 1970s and I have a vague recollection of hearing them played during the week that I was in the area. The “206 roadworks how long will it take” jingle was only used by Radio London as a general purpose “206” jingle with the rest of the vocals edited out (not surprisingly!) and I seem to remember it being played by Radio Birmingham in the same format although not quite so slickly edited. I know the “Competition Time” jingle found its way on to both Radio Brighton and Radio Oxford at the time but I’m not sure about Radio Birmingham:

I have often wondered if Syd Dale produced packages for other BBC Local Radio stations and not just Radio London and Radio Medway. I can see that “2-2-8 double two double five = Manchester’s radio” would have sat nicely on Radio London’s “486 7744” music bed. The question is, does anyone have any recordings of this package?
August 29, 2022 at 12:25 pm #107963GrahamCollinsI have a stereo dub of this package listed as BBC Radio London ‘Centertainment’ – the box notes say that it was mixed in February 1976 and is not a UK production. Permission to play it must be given from the BBC Foreign Recodings Unit, LHB 2835.
Not sure what Syd Dale had to do with it.

Yes, after receiving a copy of the same stereo dub that you have with the box notes about 20 years ago, I spent several years on a fruitless search for a jingle company called ‘Centertainment’. However, about eight years ago, I came across an interview (no longer available) on Ian Dale’s website (son of Syd) which took place on Radio Medway in which Syd Dale explained about his involvement with composing Radio Medway’s 1976 “On the Medway Band” jingle package which was produced by his Amphonic Music company. I then made the connection with Radio London’s 1976 package as some of the cuts on the Medway package used the same music beds as used on the London package. To give you an example, this is Radio Medway’s “Time Check” jingle:

And this is Radio London’s “Happy Christmas” jingle:

Apparently back in the 1970s, it was not uncommon for UK recordings to be logged as being made abroad and using a different company name and therefore coming under the control of the BBC Foreign Recordings Unit as this made it easier and cheaper for copyright licencing.
