Talkers magazine publisher Michael Harrison: “Radio is in big trouble”
Speaking at the NAB Radio Show in Philadelphia, Harrison offered ideas as to how radio could progress. He says talk radio is still a very dominant format, and will remain so as long as the talk hosts and the stations “give people what they need and want,” adding that “terrestrial radio simply cannot provide mediocre filler product.” Harrison says internet radio gives talk hosts the ability to target locally and to target a specific audience. Radio stations, meanwhile, can use the internet to “superserve
their client base.”
As for the future of radio, Harrison says talk radio may be the only viable format for AM & FM,
and he also sees big corporations owning radio stations solely to promote their content and products.
