John Peel definitely used his 1987 namecheck as a joke once, not long after the 1987 set was introduced. Actually, that very jingle forms part of something I may be uploading here later today, all being well…

That doesn’t surprise me at all!
The only time I ever recall him playing a jingle is when his show was moved to a slot which included a news break. In my mind the news jingle was always played somewhat reluctantly with no voiceover.June 25, 2014 at 2:53 pm #95035Jim DonahueDoes anyone remember which recording(s) of the ‘Danger Man’ theme Mark Radcliffe used to open his evening show during the mid 1990s?

It was the version of High Wire by The Bob Leaper Orchestra. It got a release on the “This is Cult Fiction” CD.
On YouTube here:
June 26, 2014 at 10:52 pm #95055RobinBlamiresI’m pretty sure the version used by Radcliffe was in a lower key.
June 27, 2014 at 2:45 am #95059Jim DonahueI also seem to remember him using a version in a lower key. At some point he switched to a more upbeat version featuring more brass…….
June 27, 2014 at 2:06 pm #95060IainJohnstonI’ve got versions on 3 “TV compilations” CDs, including on A to Z of Bristish TV Themes from the 60s & 70s, Best of British Television, and Cult Fiction Royale( and no doubt on other disks lurking here)
If anyone wants to hear whatever versions they are, please drop me a PM.
IJAugust 5, 2014 at 1:31 pm #95342Jim DonahueDoes anyone have any recordings of the old Pepper Tanner cuts being used on air? These were before my time and I’m curious to hear, especially the instrumental beds, how and where they were used.
August 10, 2014 at 4:09 pm #95382PrometheusHi Chaps.
Can anyone shed any light (or ideally provide a clean version) of this sonic used by “Steve Wright in the Afternoon” on Radio 1 in the late 80s..?

August 16, 2014 at 8:48 pm #95479IainJohnston“Newer JMers” – or just “weren’t even born at the time” – will find the set of those AP DJ “acapellas” (I use the term VERY loosely in this case…) from the 9:15 mark on this montage of mine from several years ago.

The 1970 AP custom package perhaps “a little too far” for “Auntie BBC” of the time – who went straight back to PAMS after that (and the 2 preceeding years of Pepper-Tanner) for their 1971 custom, which turned out as a first class result!
August 17, 2014 at 4:36 am #95482Jim DonahueI nominate the A.P. package as the worst Radio 1 ever had – that is, if like me, you believe that Radio 1 ceased to exist after 1994………….
August 17, 2014 at 8:17 am #95483IainJohnstonMy understanding is that AP was formed by a number of Heller people branching out and starting their own production company. (X-ref WHAM, WKRC, KFMB…).
The mind boggles as to what a Radio 1 custom at that time ACTUALLY by Hugh Heller could conceivably sounded like.
Or even one by the original Tom Merriman TM Productions …
August 17, 2014 at 3:35 pm #95484RobinBlamiresEven Johnny Beerling himself criticized the AP package in an interview about Radio 1’s Jam jingles on the “Mailbag” programme in 1978.
