With a couple of familiar jingles, Adrian Juste’s Christmas show (2013) on BBC Radio Devon. The music has been edited out

MemberAuthorCheers for posting Duncan. I did actually listen on the iplayer before they took it off. It was as though it was Saturday lunchtime 1982 all over again.

Nice one Duncan – glad to hear that Ade can still do it and make an entertaining radio show. Often copied but never equaled.

MemberMy Radio 1 hero, Adrian Juste has kindly given me his 15ips insert reels, complete with leader tape.
Brilliant. Is he still working in radio? He used to define Saturday lunchtimes.

He was the first jock to really stand out (along with Steve Wright) for me, discovering Radio 1 around 84 with all the jingles, sound effects and production. Does anybody still do that? His VO company is keeping busy (Show to Go) but he doesn’t do a regular radio show, just specials at Christmas and I think that one may be his last. His home studio, where he created all his R1 shows in the 80’s and 90’s is being ripped out, a lot of his old reels and carts were dumped in a skip! I was lucky enough to visit him before Christmas to save around 60 insert reels and a couple of other treasures.

MemberDuncan, thanks for posting Adrian’s Christmas show… Here’s a YouTube clip which might be of interest, showing what I presume is Adrian’s home studio…

That’s the one Mark. “Today, live from the Boating Lake Paddock Cleethorpes with…”. He’s sold/selling a lot of the equipment on ebay (just needs to keep a mic and a PC), including many of his sound effects discs. He’s keeping hold of the jingles

Now that’s what I call a home studio!
A lovely Electrovoice RE20 main mic. Probably the most popular presenter mic in use in American radio, less so over here where the AT4033 and U87 seem to rule……

That’s not a studio . . . . that’s a museum

Duncan, do you have a link to any of the items he is selling on eBay?
Thanks

When I was a kid (going back to around 1979-80, I think) I remember being up extra early one Sunday morning and wondering how Radio 1 started up, so I turned on my radio (with earpiece in) about 15 minutes before the first show (Ed Stewart’s Junior Choice!) and following a few moments of medium wave hiss I was delighted (even then!) to be treated to a nice montage of jingles leading up to the hour. Naturally, I made a point of recording it next time and this eventually became one of countless abandoned TDKs!

3 great posts gameswizard- brilliant! I remember my cousin (who knew I enjoyed the jingles) saying “do you know they play 5 minutes of jingles really early in the morning?”. That was it, next Saturday down in the kitchen with my finger hovering over the record button.

Memberabout 15 minutes before the first show
Do you, or anyone else, remember those momentary tones that were played before the start up?
They were similar to a “pip”, but a difference frequency.
I think they were every heard every 30 seconds, and possibly started around 5 mins or so before the start up.
I’m wondering whether they were for some sort of calibration? Maybe someone knows for sure.
January 7, 2014 at 5:14 pm #92917Jim Donahue
I remember them but have no idea what they were for.
January 7, 2014 at 7:24 pm #92919GrahamCollins
The intermittent tones heard were played whenever a BBC station was not running programming. It was to indicate that the frequency was still in use and essentially working. There were rules about the tone frequency and duration.
All ILR stations had to provide a similar facility but were much more elaborate, with station IDs and voice over frequency and contact information. With 24 hour services now the norm this bit of radio history is fading into memory…..

Thanks for that, gameswizard. I knew I’d heard/recorded a 10 minute version, but haven’t ever been able to find the tape. Have a feeling there was a long version prior to that one?
The two JAM Answer tracks that Steve Wright used to use are just brilliant – on a level with the AJ one he’s been using since 1994
Having not heard this for ages, I could still pre-empt some of the segues, and I bet I’m not the only one?
January 7, 2014 at 9:38 pm #92934GrahamCollins
Yes I remember Mr Wright using the start of the track at 3’05” with an Alexis Korner voice-over as a short ID “Steve Wright in the Afternoon” – never knew it was from the JAM stable. Excellent find Mike. Would sure like to hear that in the clear
