The FB site in question is a closed group where members share their memories of Radio 1: scans of old car stickers, recently discovered videos, roadshow merchandise up for sale and naturally the jingles. Johnny Beerling and some former DJs occasionally post.
I haven’t visited for some time but I know this particular page includes copies of various R1 packages in the clear, ripped from various sources and in different quality.
I have to say that, like most JMers, the stuff I have at home is treasured and protected. I uploaded a jingle montage some years ago but the first person I sent it to was Jon.

the link you gave has been removed

Maybe you just need to be a member of that group to see it. In any case, here is a screen shot. There were many other comments, but you can get the general idea from reading these:

I am not doubting the trustworthy-ness of the serious JM collectors, so please do not feel insulted or unappreciated. But in order for a project like this to be viable, there would need to be a market greater than that. And, as you can see, there are many others (this screen shot is just one example) who do not hold themselves to your standards. Which is sad for all involved.

When we start a new thread on JM, we all know that they can meander off into all sorts of paths.

However I didn’t expect this one to head off in the way it has done.
And we can’t “reverse” what is already “Out There” by parties less mindful of “Jingle Etiquette” than we might be.

I think out of respect for Jon (and indeed acknowledging his mutual trust in us) we really should halt this topic now.

May I ask Admin to now “freeze” this thread at this point?
          Thanks
          IJ

Well, the conversation is actually related to the original subject which was Stephanie Hirst’s interview with me and Johnny B. The question of releasing the Radio 1 jingles was raised there, and then sparked added conversation here. My recent post was just an attempt to illustrate what I see outside the hallowed walls of JingleMad, since it has a bearing on our decision. I don’t think anything offensive has taken place.

I take no Offensive in anything posted

Jon it is your product and it is up to you to decide , as this question has come up time and time again I think a of people was hoping that this could be limited to say any one that had purchased a min of 3 personal cuts over that last 10 years , I am sure that would sort out the serious collectors

If that is not possible then at least we now have a definitive answer of why this s not going to happen !

I can’t help adding how incredibly FANTASTIC this potential box set would be, both in terms of jingle history and special importance to those who listened to Radio 1 for every one of the years they were serviced by JAM.
I’m not sure what the “minimum order quantity” would have to be for Jon to consider it do-able, but one can only hope….

I personally would not be interested in a repackaged ‘box set’, with sleeve notes telling the story and packed with amusing anecdotes. That has already been done splendidly thanks to Geoff, Stephanie and Robin. Far too much effort and time required on Jon’s part to ship maybe 50 units max ? I wonder how many MAGIC OF PAMS were pressed and have been sold ?

As delivered, warts and all, with set-up tones and authentic tape hiss – that’s what I would appreciate as a collector.

They are only jingles but they represent a moment in time, and in my opinion, if they are ever to be given a more general release, should capture that and not be massaged now.

                  Only my thoughts.

I’ve finally had a chance to listen to this recording this morning, on a hi-fi system rather than a phone, and what comes across is the relationship between Johnny and Jon that goes so much further than Jingle Producer and Client over the years at Radio One, (and since as friends), and the benefit to Radio 1 & 2 that came from this unique way of working. It’s a huge shame that the relationship between Radio One and JAM ended the way it did, but that’s down to the people who were working at Radio One in the mid ’90s, and sadly the clock can’t be turned back. Radio Two should still be using JAM, but that’s another discussion.

I think Graham’s probably right. At some point in the future, if Jon is happy to make the Radio One and/or the Radio Two masters available, we’d be happy to hear them in their simplest form, ie a dub of whatever has been previously digitised from the JAM Vault, test tones and all. Even if it isn’t the most exciting way to deliver historical audio like this, files on SD cards could be the easiest to post, as 50+ people downloading gigabytes of audio would be a strain on anyone’s system. Again, having read the Facebook thread, I can understand why this archive may never be made available.

On another note, it’s just over a week and a year until Radio One and Two’s 50th birthdays, and wouldn’t it be great to get Jon, Johnny and Stephanie (plus some Producers and DJs of the era) together in person at Broadcasting House for a Panel Chat/Audience – either in the Radio Theatre or The BH Council Chamber, and listen to some JAM jingles? I’ve spent a couple of days in the Council Chamber at BH, and it’d be a perfect size for an informal event. The room even has a picture of Lord Reith looking at you. I wouldn’t expect a Jingles event to be broadcast, btw. Egton House has long since been demolished.

A few photos of the room (from the Internet – I’ve no idea what the event was)

50 years is the ultimate anniversary, I think. After much longer than that, the ’70s and ’80s become ever more distant from current radio.

I would be more than happy with this route! : )

I’d be happy just to hear a high quality montage of all the main cuts and add-ons through the years :)

My purchased AlfaSound CD-R’s of JAMs Radio 1 jingles (and a bonus 1980 Radio 2 package) have finally deteriorated :( – probably due to those dodgy printed labels that were stuck on the discs.

GW – I’m sure someone on JM posted a while back a technique for “saving” CDs afflicted by the warping caused by those labels.
                          ???

I think even that process won’t rescue Steve England’s horrible blue dye CD-Rs from that time.

Mine also gave up after about 3 years and refused to play. Luckily I had transferred them all to HDD by then.

Absolutely agree. This WOULD be fantastic. Here’s a definite purchaser.
