Thought I’d montage up another cassette of local off-air recordings. This from 1989.

October 24, 2015 at 10:07 am #98725RobinBlamiresAh lovely! I was actually working on my second series of off-air compliations just last night. Should be up next month though probably won’t be as good as this.
October 24, 2015 at 10:26 am #98726IainJohnstonExcellent Jonno! Hazy memories of years of summer holidays “Down South”, IoW, and over on the Channel islands…
Reception of so many damn good stations receivable from Pompey – Power, Spire, Ocean, Southern… and even
the odd bit of bleed/lift from over La Manche (e.g. Opalis) and every one seemed to have utterly brilliant jingles :^(
…JAM/Alfa, AJ (especially superb Power and Spire), David Arnold, and even French JAM/TempleOfTune(?) in the case
of Opalis… all now sadly gone and replaced by … “fully-compliant with UK tax regulations financial vehicles”…Must really get “round tuit” and digitize some of the drawer-full of similar cassettes here!
October 24, 2015 at 2:08 pm #98728jonnoMemberAuthorThanks for the kind words Robin and Iain.
Whatever happened to Chris Kelly after he left Power FM?
October 24, 2015 at 2:37 pm #98729PKMemberAhh that Dave Arnold Southern Sound jingle that so blatently copied the TM Synchronism Cut 8 jingle that the Chiltern Network used at the Top Of The Hour!
October 24, 2015 at 4:45 pm #98730IainJohnstonThe various David Arnold customs are big gaps in my collection – his “product” seemed to be very big below the Humber-Severn line and never reached anywhere near Scotland.
Only in recent years have I been able to definitely identify his work to relate to some of my old aircheck cassettes from that era.
Quick question for Jonno:- did Power FM actually have a JAM KIIS package at one time, or was it AJ Productions doing a very good impersonation of JAM vocals? :^)
October 24, 2015 at 5:15 pm #98731RobinBlamiresWas definitely a resing of “KIIS 90” circa 1992/93. Was used in tandem with a TM Century KIIS package and contained that amazing part-home-grown top of hour. John will probably have even clearer memories.
October 24, 2015 at 5:59 pm #98733IainJohnstonThanks Robin
Must have been strange for a station to use 2 “competing” producers similar packages at the same time!I still have a good dub of that TOH, but only low-q Mp3 bits of what I’d thought were AJ JAM-like cuts
October 24, 2015 at 9:27 pm #98741jonnoMemberAuthorHere’s a fast paced montage of the TMC jingles

October 24, 2015 at 9:36 pm #98743IainJohnston“fast paced” – on helium or the 5%-speedup often used by stations on “records” to make them sound “brighter” :^)
That “sound FX of breaking bottles and smashed windows” urban-style package (or some of it) appeared in Edinburgh when Forth “RFM” dropped the “R” – either it “didn’t work here” or they’d no idea how to “use ’em” – they disappeared. And the station has had very few sung jingles ever since :^(
For some reason I’m still convinced Power had AJ cuts at some stage?
And to this day that “in-house” compiled TOH/news sequence is utterly one of the best on-air I’ve ever heard :^)
October 24, 2015 at 9:52 pm #98746PKMemberPower did have AJ cuts, I remember hearing them on the station in April 1989.
October 24, 2015 at 11:29 pm #98748mbMemberPower launched with AJ Jingles
October 25, 2015 at 12:26 am #98749rakMemberGreat stuff, jonno. My 1996 aircheck (I was staying in a hotel for work, and would leave a cassette running while at breakfast/dinner etc) is still on Soundcloud. Probably worth skipping past the first 2 or 3 minutes https://soundcloud.com/davidfurness/power-fm-aircheck-1996
Grooveaddicts jingles, BJ and McKenna sweepers. A great sounding station at that time.
