      Hi everyone,

I'm musing on the idea of making some alterations to the basic format of my web site.

The idea I have is to remove all my jingle list pages and replace them with a single Word Document (or PDF) jingle list download. This would make updating my list a whole lot easier but would reduce the search ability of my list via search engines such as Google.

Your votes and thoughts are welcome please.

I’m assuming you don’t have the space for both Mark?

As someone who is already aware of your site and knows the url, I would say that pdf is a very good idea as it is extremely easy to search through.

However, as you say, this lessens the chances of new visitors finding you via a search engine.

Still, my vote is for the pdf file.

        Not much help I know!!!

        Liam.

I would advise against a PDF file.

In order you read it, you need the software. For sure, you can go download it but some work places don’t allow extra programs to be installed unless it’s been cleared by the IT department.

So straight away you have hit a stumbling block with the people that can’t download.

          Stick with a word document.

I thgough most companies installed at least Acrobat reader as standard desktop – Its much handier for corporate material as people can fiddle with word whilst PDF’s are set :)

However you could do both as it takes about 30 seconds to convert a Word document to PDF.

I think the fact of the matter is, my jingle list as a Word document is more user friendly and is far easier to keep up-to-date. It is also easier to print-off a hard-copy of the list as HTML doesn’t print very well. I think I’m leaning more towards the Word download rather than the current HTML list. Having said that, I think I will follow most others and offer it as a read-only PDF raher than the Word document. (Most places have Acrobat Reader at the very least).

Anyhow, the votes don’t seem to be saying one way or another as they are tied straight down the middle at 50% each. With the small amount of votes, I take it not many people care so maybe I should close the whole site altogether (only kiding!)

Will watch the post over the next few days and then it’s action stations…………

Have your list in a word document, and then save it as a .html file from Word and upload it so you get the best of both worlds then Mark!

Just to add my thoughts… I personally think there’s nothing wrong with your list as it is (I even “borrowed” the format for my own list!) however I can see how you’d like an easier to update format.

In that case I prefer the PDF format over Word- the files look the same on everyone’s system, and is still searchable (and viewable in html) through Google. It’s easy to save a word file as a PDF too isn’t it? (sure I downloaded a plug-in for word to do this a few years ago)

The company I work for won’t let employees download any new software or programs onto any computer on the network. And none of the computers have Acrobat installed.

We can get the IT team to look into it for us, but you know where I’m coming from, right? If I had to download a new program just to look at something, I wouldn’t bother.

Well, then why not make it available in Word and HTML, then?

I am more than willing to convert it to PDF for you if you do so wish, as I have the complete Acrobat package.

I’ve been working out a way to move my lists onto a nice neat page for fellow collectors to browse – this now has a search facility and sort
                          interested in views :)

                            Hey Michael,

Nice way of doing you list in the database like that. What script are you using as a matter of interest?

                              Let’s keep jingle collecting alive
