I was just browsing through my sound files and came across this little JAM sandwich I produced to start a show I did for some friends who live in Cornwall.
CUE: Big Dave Nightingale with the lyrics!
It’s my favourite UK station song and goes down a treat at Jinglemad events!

Hey! That fits a treat.
Thanks both for the lyrics, now who wants to take a bash at scoring the vocal chart? (Just kidding!)
December 8, 2004 at 5:32 pm #14607YoursTrulyMemberA friend told me that the Pirate theme song had been discussed here, so I just wanted to say how happy I am that people still enjoy it!
As the guy who commissioned the Pirate jingles (I was Launch Chief Executive of Pirate) and wrote the lyrics to the Pirate theme, I can certainly confirm that the “missing lyric” was “Bodmin Moor”.
The licence area was originally for Cornwall only, but we always planned to conquer Plymouth as well, so I didn’t want the theme to be exclusively Cornish. However, if I had included lots of Devon references and then the Radio Authority had banned us from including Devon in our marketing area, then we would have had a ruined theme! My compromise was to include the starting phrase “From the Tamar’s bridges . . .” a reference to the two bridges (rail and road) that connect Devon to Cornwall at Plymouth.
The Eagle version (commissioned when we won the Guildford licence from Allied Radio) used the slow version of the Yours Truly theme – which gave it an entirely different feel. I did the lyrics for that one too (as I did for all my jingle packages).
The themes were always great fun to do: major production numbers that were constructed in many pieces – they were never sung all the way through . . . and sometimes when there was a soloist for a few words or one line, the soloist would always come in at a separate time to the main group.
For what its worth, I think radio stations have lost so much heart and soul by not having strong on-air music-based identities. Spoken production elements are rarely memorable – and now they are soooooooooo complicated and over-produced that they are also rarely intelligble to anyone other than their producer!
It never ceased to amaze me how many listeners commented on our jingles – and who would come up to you at outside broadcasts and sing the themes!
I have many happy memories of the many, many, many jingle sessions that I helped produce with the assistance of Steve England and Jon Wolfert and the gang in Dallas. As many of you jingle fans will either know directly, or will have heard from others, in Steve and Jon, you could not possibly meet nicer people. Both of them care to ludicrous extremes about their customers and go to quite extraordinary lengths to produce the highest quality products.
Even after many years sitting in on the sessions – and getting quite good at spotting faults that casual listeners would never hear – it was always staggering to me how Steve and Jon (and the rest of the team – Brian, Chris and everyone involved) would always call for “just one more take” (for the umpteenth time) and just go that extra mile to aim for perfection.
Being lucky enough to work for another customer-focused company (RCS – the makers of the legendary Selector music scheduling software) I can truly say that RCS and Jam are two of the most amazing radio-related companies on the planet. Both are run by passionate enthuisiasts and I am privileged to have been associated with both.
Jam will ALWAYS be my Number One Choice For Jingles 😆
December 8, 2004 at 8:37 pm #14609BigdaveGreat to have you on board….
After having it pointed out to me , It is of course Bodmin Moor ! I’ve actually got the Alfasound ID Compact Disc 5 on whilst I type and it’s blasting out loud and clear – along with the cuts from that original 1992 composite package ….
It’s nice to hear that a radio professional like yourself is of the same opinion as us all on Jinglemad – namely that the sung jingle is a wonderful thing being constantly overlooked by PD’s that now concentrate on the balance book rather than the station sound.
Pirate , The Eagle , County Sound and the sadly unused UKRD package were great examples of how good station imaging could create a positive vibe that allowed recall of the station name when it came to RAJAR time! Also they all had that JAM stamp of quality on them – and as a newcomer to the Jinglemad family ,it’s only right to shamelessly plug Sean Martin’s excellent website for his own personal tribute to their 30 year reign – if you want a copy of the tribute disc he produced , please let either myself or Sean (aka on here as RadioJunkie) know and I’m sure one can be arranged for you.
By the way – the fact that at the last Jingleday in Central London, you had the sight of 20 jingle anoraks (including yours truly) singing the said cut in the George on Mortimer Street (just round the corner from RCS I believe….) , I think would have brought a smile to your face and a tear to the eye – probably due to the fact that our voices are less Chris Kershaw and Dan Alexander, and more like Liz Kershaw and Jean Alexander!
If you are who I think you may be , Y.T , you’ll also know of the reasons of the famous/infamous “South West In Buffalo” cut as well !!! .
Feel free to pop in any time here – you’ll always be with other likeminded souls here – and if we’re down in London on one of our regular Jinglemad meets , come along and join us if you’re in town. You’d be more than welcome!!!!
December 9, 2004 at 9:50 am #14611UKJinglesMemberYes I echo Big Dave’s sentiments…..
Come back Mr P…..British Radio Needs You!!“Most (British) Radio has Degenerated and all you get is singles…No Jingles” (well none with any decent harmonies!)
