Back in 1968, Jim West put together a presentation voiced by he and Gary Edens for Australian stations. Ironically, Jim was fired (by letter) by Bill Meeks while IN Australia making the sales presentation. Jim told me that he came back and had two letters waiting for him: 1) His termination letter from PAMS; and 2) A certified letter from Tom Merriman telling him not to do anything about other jobs before speaking to him.

Jim followed through on the PAMS orders for jingles he took in Australia despite no longer being employed by the company and went to work for TM. Jim was the salesman on all of the WNBC jingles and talked to me about the ‘birth of the shotgun’ being in the control room discussions when KCBQ’s Program Director Buzz Bennett suggested dropping the “button” from the end of a Phase II cut, thereby creating the legendary TM Shotgun, later sold as a single one-cut product.

Anyway… I digress. Jim’s daughter just pointed me to the link to the original Australian presentation, which I now share with those of you who may not have heard it.

          What an excellent topic…….
We don’t hear enough “classic” Australian Jingles!
I just love that “City of the Sun” Logo for 2SM :-)
Here’s a link to the montage I made a couple of years ago after my holiday to Sydney and realising that the Jingles over there now are even worse than the one’s over here!!!

“We don’t hear enough “classic” Australian Jingles”

Back jn the 1970s in my first “phase” of mooching jingle dubs directly from stations overseas, and also
a later lot in the late 1980s, I got quite a few tapes from Oz and New Zealand.

Early ones of course were PAMS and an Australian company who thought that a “big band” style was “livelier”
than acapellas…; 1980s were some of the worst jingles I’ve ever heard, as well as some that were refreshingly
            different.

I can rummage a few items into a montage or two if anyone’s interested enough, although
most are on very creaky media now.

PS – the 2SM is on an old demo of these “BIG” acapellas with Radio 55 KOY Phoenix as the demo version.

Very cool Tracy, interesting story behind the story regarding the letters from Bill and Tom.
