Sorry to me this is just noise .. Im sure they could have found a better on air sound …
July 1, 2013 at 7:23 pm #90569IainJohnstonIs there a version of these “sweepers” (they’re certainly not jingles…) available in English?
July 1, 2013 at 7:24 pm #90570gameswizardMemberDreadful racket.
I’d rather listen to two frying pans being banged together.July 1, 2013 at 7:47 pm #90572RobinBlamiresIt’s a station sound designed to suit 1Xtra, and a young audience, not that of those who harker back with rose tinted spectacles. Though that said, David Rodigan maybe an exception to the younger presenters of the station, though still sounding relevant.
July 1, 2013 at 8:54 pm #90577martinlesterMemberWhat the !!!
I look forward to Len’s Comments
July 1, 2013 at 11:40 pm #90581LenGroatI have already commented on the topic on ‘Radio Today’ :
“Surely it cannot be 1st April already?”
SERIOUSLY ~ there is NO need for this radio station, let alone these ‘idents’ ~ some BBC radio is a runway gravy train and 1Xtra play music bought by the narrowest segment of society. In a country floundering along the bottom financially and creatively, the BBC should CHOP this station off at the roots now, and put money in radio that MATTERS, and not have a station that plays obscure modern music that will not last 5 weeks, let alone 50 years !
(Is that up to scratch MartIn ?)
Oh, and the BBC sent 297 staff to cover Glastonbury! (Official stats from Shennan of Radio 2 )
July 2, 2013 at 2:59 am #90587mjb1124MemberI understand that hip-hop/urban music may not be everybody’s cup of tea (even among younger people), but there IS a significant audience for it, and this imaging works for that type of station. Hearing all these imaging pieces at once might a bit much, but I’m sure that between the songs, it flows well. Traditional sung jingles wouldn’t sound right on this format.
July 2, 2013 at 5:45 am #90593muffyJust think how much they cost us …ITS OUR BBC
July 2, 2013 at 6:58 am #90595WAVAMemberIf 1Xtra is an urban station (I’m guessing it is, I have never heard it) these idents will fit the sound of the station perfectly. When was the last time you listened to 1Xtra or an Urban station in the US? The format doesn’t allow for traditional imaging or “jingles” as the OP calls them.

Can I take it you won’t be replacing the JAM and TM jingles with this “new” imaging (for want of a better word) any time soon .Len ?
July 4, 2013 at 12:15 am #90624LenGroatMartin your comment is definitely in the Right Direction !
What I find amazing is the all the razzamatazz and (transparent) hype, around what is basically an easy to make, predictable product…. yet all these London-based BBC ‘pals’/ radio people unimaginatively go along with it….
July 4, 2013 at 7:16 pm #90636NickySMemberI actually like these, based on the network they are running on and the target age of 1Xtra. To be honest I’d worry if Len liked them as he not target audience.
July 4, 2013 at 9:34 pm #90642muffyNicky we know you love jingles .. There is no way these are true jingles ,( I bet USA Jingle house could make better than whats now on the table ) ….. these are production elements .. .. The vocals are poor .. Thats not singing , its a man shouting or a girl sounding like .. pinky and perky …… .. why didnt the BBC invest in Will:iam or other to come up with true production stabs and vocals that mix in with the tracks .. This RnB /dance station funded by the BBC sounds now like a pirate with the jingles ordered by one extra ……What seems to happen at radio one /one extra .. Someone on the team likes a product and its rolled out ….. and they dont fit the sound of the station …. So what next for 6 music in the way of jingles .. ..Man in a pub says one ,two and hits a mic …!!
July 5, 2013 at 2:18 am #90643ratnobMemberWith Len and Co on this one. Dreadful.

I’d rather listen to two frying pans being banged together. It’s not always I chime in on these threads, but the subject title compelled me to check out what all the hub bub was about, and I then read the quote by gameswizard and about nearly fell off my chair laughing (because he absolutely hit the nail on the head)
Now, granted I’m not in today’s generation whom this station would be targeted to, but I got to thinking, since many of us here grew up before the days of digital workstations, and cut our teeth editing tape with a razor blade & grease pen, applying all effects manually to tracks, in today’s “gimme-gimme now now” instant gratification society, with all this noise being generated in these “state of the art” facilities, if it weren’t for technology, I wonder if this type of dreck would even emanate from such a facility if all those hippity hoppity, scratch, squeeze, crunch effects still needed to be created from scratch? In my mind (and yes, this is just one persons opinion, I get it- different strokes for different folks) but geesh!.. the frying pans being banged together is about as dead on an assessment to describe what I saw in that video. I wonder if the outtakes reel shows the smoking of the crack pipes before the session , umm – better stop here before I’m bashed for being politically Incorrect (which, for better or worse, I proudly am)
Right on gameswizard ! I’d rather watch two fully loaded freight trains racing towards each other at one hundred miles an hour, on the same track & collide! (in full 7.1 dolby surround) than tune into any frequency and sample a millisecond of so called “program content” that these jingles would be associated with.
Ugh! I think I’ll pull our my Bye Bye Birdie soundtrack & crank up this track

It baffles me as to how intelligent dinosaurs became extinct while the human race, full of idiots, continue to exist.
July 7, 2013 at 2:29 pm #90665muffyBut …………….The jingles are crap and a waste of BBC money
July 7, 2013 at 3:10 pm #90666gameswizardMembera waste of BBC money
That’s one thing the BBC does know how to do. And they do it in superb style.
July 7, 2013 at 6:49 pm #90668DevawebMemberThere are some very silly comments on this thread, all of which comes across as very “disgusted of Tunbridge Wells”.
Firstly, no-one called them jingles. They’re imaging, not jingles.
Secondly, this is a radio station that plays cutting-edge urban music. Texas-based harmonies are never going to do the job.
Thirdly, on the basis that you don’t like the imaging, or the music, and have no plans to tune in, they’re probably doing their job right. Along with Muffy’s comment about the station sounding like pirate radio – good on them.
Fourthly, there’s actually some quite cool stuff going on in the production with the pitch-shifting and suchlike. They match the production in the station’s music nicely.
While it’s not on one of my presets either (oddly, Radio 4 seems to be my station of choice a fair bit these days), that doesn’t meant that the imaging doesn’t do its job.
Chris
July 7, 2013 at 7:39 pm #90670GrahamCollinsI think they are jingles in the sense that they have words sung over instrumented backing tracks. The voice talent is doing more than just talking.
I would have been more surprised if the sound was more harmonious and I would guess that they sit with the playlist pretty well.
I’m not sure what they cost but can’t believe that it was a huge amount in the grand scheme of things. Bear in mind that the BBC saved an annual £30K recently by cutting out croissants and orange juice from meetings……
July 7, 2013 at 7:45 pm #90671muffyI agree production more than jingle .. But Im sure a kid in a bedroom could make them as bad … Yes lets support the format .. but with quality .. Im not looking for a fully sung production .. just something that isnt so .. Cheap in its style ..
July 7, 2013 at 7:49 pm #90672DevawebMemberBear in mind that the BBC saved an annual £30K recently by cutting out croissants and orange juice from meetings……
Also worth bearing in mind that BBC Worldwide normally own the publishing rights (it’s stipulated in all their briefing documents), meaning that the audio can also help to pay for itself; regardless of who makes it.
July 7, 2013 at 10:06 pm #90675muffyPure jingles as used by Radio One Could have been the answer .. as Radio One and One Extra are very much the same on air product ..And maybe thats how it should be sold to the listener ..Ok it may have needed to go Left or right of the mainstream Radio One sound .. but im sure it was possible ..As the company it can adapt to sound right for radio stations in Russia , China and Germany and more ………. its jingles are on soundcloud ..
July 7, 2013 at 10:10 pm #90677mbMemberI woke up one day feeling no different but over 40 – hating the noise on Radio 1 ( and a lot of the time on Radio 2 ) and I won’t be adding these to my collection however they do what they do for whom they are intended rather well and in quite an interesting way.
To be honest Radio 1 jingles have been a pretty poor for a number of year – not because I don’t like the modern production techniques but because they are creatively a bit dull at least these have some more thought and creativity behind them. Radio 1 is run by the marketing department which is too hip for anyone and their sound has blundered around.
As I’m not a listener to 1Xtra these are not going to touch my life and I’ll go back to my SD card in the car with all the TM / JAM demos on rotation.July 7, 2013 at 10:47 pm #90679muffyI agree .. I remember Chris moyles hinting he didnt rate the stations Jingles
July 8, 2013 at 10:17 am #90690IainJohnston“can adapt to sound right for radio stations in Russia , China and Germany and more”
Countries which surely do not have that such a high percentage of their population that fit into the “demographic” shall we say of who would listen to rap/hip-hop/urban and other “US street music”? (I’m being very careful here not to be “politically un-correct…).
In that particular demographic, the station is something very “London-centric” – something the BBC sometimes would appear to think must surely “fit” the entire listening population profile from Lands End to Sullam Voe.Just as with the “meccanno” and other BBC “imaging” that the BBC Worldwide department hold the global publishing rights to, I do indeed look fowards to hearing lots & lots of resings for clients around the world of all these “state of the art imaging packages”.
(Aye, sure!…as we say in Scotland…
