Just saw this tape reel of old Radio Trent jingles 70s?) for sale on Ebay until early Tuesday night 22nd December.

Wonder if it might be of interest to Len Groat or if Len has any idea what might be actuall on the tape?

Fingers crossed then that it’s what it’s expected to be.
It makes you wonder why the seller bought it in the first place.

With no sight of the actual reel, there could be “2 jingles” on it and meet the description.

I’m sure Len could tell by the Trent label how “old” the reel/contents are likely to be.
And if it might be a set of the station Masters. Or not.

And if its Alfa – I think the “proper” Reference copies are safe and sound ;^)
…as well as excellent quality dubs of just about everything Trent ever had being “Out There” amongst (reputable) Collectors.

            Happy to help.

The label has the original logo on from a 1975-77. I had the ‘Masters’ of these packages in my office for 15 years and this is not a master reel, or even a reference copy as the cut listings were on the front. These jingles were all pre Alfa – the Johnny Arthey produced ‘Sounds Like You Want to Hear’, ‘Sound It Out’ and ‘All You Need/Magic’ packages.

I still have a pile of unused old Trent stickers as I’m sure many other people do!

              “original logo”

I did wonder, as I recognised it from the pics in the old IBA Yearbooks from away back – remember those? and the pics & articles about “ILR” (would anyone recognise a “radio car” with a telescopic pop-up OB aerial anymore?), or even the info sheets they’d give out about each station & their field-strength coverage contour maps etc.

Did Luxy have PEPPER TANNER Jingles?

I do note that there always seems to be a question mark at the end of his descriptors! (legal posterior covering?)

And the word “pirate” then Luxy or Trent or whatever. When neither of course were that.

I’d avoid these tapes like the proverbial.
Purely not on the merits or otherwise of the seller, but simply because he doesn’t seem to be able to really know whats recorded on them per se.
If there’s “anything of interest” genuinely on them – I’m sure the JM community will have ’em somewhere.

And if Luxy ever had P-T stuff, no matter how “rare”, “Norman Barrington would know”!

I think from the latest description these are just a jingle collectors dubs – probably contemporary – so goodness knows what the quality will be like!?

Luxy USED some edited cuts from a package called ‘Uptight’ which is on NB’s site:

                      http://www.normanb.net/pepper/uptight.mp3

These were not customised, just had the US call letters edited out (the package was designed to do that to make shorter cuts).

In a way it’s a cheesy package….. “poor man’s PAMS”, but animated vocals, and the ‘Yur where the Akshun nnIiisssss” soloist pre-dates the ‘schreechy’ solos of many of today’s ‘jingles’

And they sounded good on fuzzy/ever-fading 208!

I don’t wonder for a second why s/he bought it. We just acquired Frank Holler, Jr’s archives… a local jock (and friend) who passed away at 66 years old. Frank was the PD and/or worked at MANY stations across the US including WIOQ, KLOU, WCOZ, WWWW, WPOP, WDRC and on and on. Frank’s fingers were like flypaper, taking original jingle masters (and sometimes dubs) from all of the stations across the land. He also airchecked/boardchecked a lot of stations, too.

Frank’s family had NO interest in preserving his legacy and sent everything off to an auction house. It was estimated that the broadcast reels, CDs, cassettes and DATs would sell for a few hundred dollars at most. When bidding time came, the radio related stuff went for thousands of dollars by the time the bidding paddles were done. I know — as I said above — we bought them. The competition was on eBay pre-auction looking up stuff to see how much they could get for the materials and saw a gold mine… just like this guy probably does.

As Toby Arnold once said to me, some people see antiques… others just see old furniture…

I know who’s got the reference copies that used to be at Castle Gate, (I had the luxury of threading up Trent 4 recently) and I can safely say that

                          A/ They’re in good hands
B/ They’ve just been rebaked, so they will be around for a long time yet.
                          C/ They still sound great

BigDave: good to see the ‘reference copies’ are safe!

Each set from Trent 1 to 8 holds special memories- many trips back and forth from Nottingham along the M1/M62 to Alfasound at Sale. Spec’ing the cuts / doing the tracks / the vocals / the endless hours mixing. The masterly work of Alan & Steve, the amazing hospitality of the staff and families , and memorably flying in Jackie Dickson, Johnny & Debbie Hooper, and Mike Collier to augment the Alfa singers.

I never realised at the time but 8 CUSTOM packages was a LOT of work – my favourite remains Trent 8

                              ……………..magical days

p.s. My VERY long term memory is that the neat writing on the box MIGHT be that of John Barter – Head of Music at Trent from ’75 to ’77. I took over from him and recall the writing from various things in the Library + logically he might have had a ‘spare’ dub just in case? Then again a lot of people have neat hand-writing!

When I saw this tape box on EBay I was inquisitive and just though Len might be able to shed a little light on the contents of the reel not thinking it would expand into this discussion.

There was someone who used to post on Digital Spy (who’s User Name I’ve forgotten?) about some Radio Trent and Luxy threads that apparently worked for both stations.

Would that be the original owner of this tape I wonder?

THIS IS SOLD AS SEEN AS I HAVE NO WAY OF EITHER PLAYING IT OR CHECKING THE CONTENTS”

To use an old Scottish expression – “dinnae buy a pig in a poke”
(a “poke” being a closed bag, so basically never buy anything completely unseen…no matter what the seller claims is in it)

The “Trent” stuff apparently went for £6-52.

That user is selling expired (!) car tax discs. I didn’t know there was a market for them. I wish I’d kept mine.

Having said that – it’s probably a bit pot, kettle and black regarding our interest in Jingles!

I’d say from the description of that CD on Ebay he is selling copies of the ’75 package.
