Jingles are now the subject of review by The Guardian newspaper!

They liken the new (synthetic) effort to a theme from tv’s ‘Miami Vice’ (1984-1988 starring Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas) but conclude by saying:

“Our favourite is from 1976 – so simple, so Chic”

      Guess WHO made that :-)

The FACT is sung jingles work better and are more memorable- why are Radio 1’s (multiple) producers taking SO LONG to remember that simple fact? One in the eye for the synthetic non-musical jingle brigade, and another ‘win’ for Jon :-)

        Agreed Len – but for me unless it’s sung, it’s not a jingle it’s just a theme…..

For collectors of my age group, the word “theme” is meaningless in the context of radio IDs. Along with various other terms usurped or distorted by today’s “Trendy Wendies”.

            Its an INSTRUMENTAL, OK! :)

(…and oddly enough, compared with many such “pieces of production music” in recent times, I actually like this one :) )

I like it, too, especially the idea of separating the 2 syllables by a . . . . (news) beat ;)

              A good punctuator.

When I saw the subject heading I felt a brief flicker of excitement before reality came crashing in – like when you see an ad for an old band going on tour and then realising that all the key members are dead.

                  AGREED !

It’s an ”INSTRUMENTAL” or “theme” – that’s why I put “jingle” in quotation marks. Unless devotees like us continue to point out the difference there will be a new generation of people (and young Guardian journos) who can’t tell a jingle from a theme!

Interestingly the creation of this effort was very ‘BBC pc’ – it was ‘put out to tender’.

                  Guess who won?

Someone who had worked on BBC Newsbeat – but now makes ‘themes’!

Technically the ’76 Newsbeat cut IS a jingle, as it includes singing :)

To be fair to the creatives who won the tender they do reference their work as themes – it is the uninitiated (who mean well) who refer to them as jingles – a bit like people who talk about echo when they really mean reverb…… don’t get me started.

OK I admit it, I do like them – very infectious and understated really. R1 have every reason to be ‘shouty’ but they’re not. I want them in the clear !
