Great! Thanks for the heads up. Interesting that some of those Ross packages were using the “I’ll Take Manhattan” melody, which I thought had begun with the PAMS jingles circa 1964. I wonder what the story was.

JingleJoe–I was thinking the same thing about the “I’ll Take Manhattan” Melody line– according to Allan Sniffen (musicradio77.com) & the late Rick Sklar (WABC PD), the change to the “I’ll Take Manhattan” melody was “associated” with the move to PAMS…

Indeed, quite a mystery. According to both those sources you mention, I think most of us made that same assumption. In the book “The Hits between the Hits” by Don Worsham, PAMS tried selling WABC Series 15 around 1960. Not sure what the logo was as I can’t place the demo at this time. Additionally, it states that WABC gave PAMS a try in 1962. I recall that WABC used Johnson & Sidday and Ross jingles until that time, and then jumped to PAMS and the distinct logo we all came to know. Was the sampler above part of Ross’ attempt to keep WABC as a client by using the “I’ll Take Manhattan” melody? No mention anywhere in any of the books, not that I could see.

I heard that PAMS Series 15 Audition–I think it was the same logo as WKBW–certainly NOT the “I’ll Take Manhattan” logo…

I was reading the book “Rocking America” by the late Rick Sklar (Former PD of WABC/NYC). Re: the “I’ll Take Manhattan” melody, Sklar wrote: “WABC’s jingles were based on the melody “I’ll Take Manhattan”, but the jingles did not match the music”. Now this was when Rick Sklar took over as PD (circa 1963)–which would explain the earlier (Roy Ross-WABC) jingles with the “I’ll Take Manhattan” Theme.

Superb quality and content, surprises galore, and even stereo mixes of things that were never Stereo in the first place!

Norman B has probably THE biggest & longest-standing jingle collection anywhere outside of certain “vaults”.
And versions of things that most collectors will have no idea exist other than in demo or original client-commissioned form.

And collectors over a certain age will recognise the “tympani crash” technique Norman uses, especially “mirroring”
a long ago tape-spliced “PAMS 14-49” montage that would have been VERY hard to do back then.

Gents et al, I’d bag the full zip of this utterly excellent effort before it … uh-oh…..

Just dipped into the Norman Barrington 50th Anniversary page. Incredible. Will look forward to listening to all the cuts at a future date. You know, there was a time many, many years ago, when I thought I might be a real odd ball to be a fan of radio jingles and collect jingles as a hobby. Wow, who did that? So therefore, I did not mention it to anyone. I just went about my hobby quietly, recording material off air, looking at offers in the music press of the time, publications like Sounds and Record Mirror where you could find small ads for tapes available of Dj cuts or compilations of Pirate radio, PAMS or USA station edits. I met a few like minded folk along the way, mainly when I started getting involved in Hospital Radio. I had no idea about the history of jingle companies, who sang them, made them…I just knew I liked them. I always remember my first realisation that jingles could be resung for other stations when I purchased a quarter inch tape of a jingle montage. I knew the jingle really well, as you will do. The cut was…from PAMS….’Remember This Golden Classic.’.etc. ( you know the one). I was astounded to hear a different lyric. ‘Here’s Jack Gale, to ruin your breakfast…….’ Anyway, I am always in awe of the all the folk on here who know all about the history of jingles, the singers, the producers, the background stories. I just go along with the flow and enjoy reading all the stories on here and chatting with my jingle friends out there. I am a mere minnow in a shoal of jingle experts, but what better company could you wish for.

At that time, Ron was less than 25 miles away from me, and we didn’t know; I also had no idea to what extent
how many other serious collectors might be anywhere within range at all, never mind Norman B. Everyone else
UK was a “long way Down South” – and today many of them are again to be found thanks to this Forum

And yet we never encountered Jon Wolfert or other USA collectors back then other than Tom Konard
at WCFL Chcago – but as I mentioned on a post here a wee while back, we had audio of “someone at PAMS”
technically describing how he put moog overlays on to a PAMS backing track – never realising just WHO the
voice was on the tape, and that some day he would leave PAMS and be the founder & owner of JAM…

Likewise that dub, at 3&3/4 IPS! The cut Ron describes was from the WAYS Charlotte utterly bonkers
version of PAMS Series 27.
I recreated my own version of that big montage several years ago (link still somewhere on JM).
I’ve never again found a dub of the “original” Golden Classic montage as mentioned – but no doubt it’ll
be “Out There” either on TooYoob or on a 5″ reel in a cardboard box lying in an attic somewhere…

Today, at least one other modern version exists on TooYoob by Elmer someone in the States.

And now back to Norman B’s excellent sampler…

“In the day” the only time I heard that PAMS 27 Jack Gale cut used was on the “Potpourri One” sampler done by Ron Harris. In fact, the first dub of it I got back in the seventies started with a WLCY PAMS 33 cut edit (Merry Go Round). In time, I found that there were various incomplete dubs floating around. I’ve since replaced those old dubs with a copy that Ron ran from his original master around 20 years ago. Ron just told me that he’s made a couple of “technical adjustments” to the original sampler and will provide me with a dub of it shortly for inclusion on the web.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. As you will all know it’s a labour of love for me, an excuse to listen once more to great stuff, laced with great nostalgia. It took over a year to assemble – hence a few mistakes (like repeating a cut in two different categories or thinking ‘oh I should have included so and so in there!’). In the end it was rushed to be completed before the end of 2017 or else it would not have been the 50th anymore Needless to say, I already have enough in mind to do another!

I am aware in that 50 years we have come a long way from the days I would hold my finger above the record key between records only to say B!@&$%*^! when a DJ had the audacity to talk over some fab bed. It did not take long for my record button to break due to over-enthusiasm. Then there were those 3″ spools and jiffy bags. Posted back and forth. Now we upload to dropbox for someone specific, or in this case to jinglesamplers.com and it travels silently under the Atlantic and is instantly available to the planet.

I shall forgive whoever above referred to my sampler as the “Newest Ken R. Jingle Sampler” since Ken is a good friend of mine, and has contributed more to my personal collection than any other, his being amongst the first samplers I ever got to hear, Tracy C being close behind. I did my best to even surprise them with some cuts. and if you are sharp eared, there are also quite a few trick cuts – crafty edits to make jingles do things they are not supposed to, aimed at the cognoscenti.

When you spend a lot of time on something you obviously want as many to hear it as possible, so thanks for drawing attention to it’s release.

For the series montages, I thought it would be boring to only feature the demo WCKY or KHEY cuts, so I wonder how many noticed the fictitious Series #21 cuts! There are many other tricks. There is even a Pepper cut with a PAMS ending buried in there….. :-”
