With Scott Shannon taking over breakast on ‘New York’s Oldies station’ there will have to be some JAM re-sings and maybe more? Perhaps more revived Z100 jingles?
It really will be’ Radio Like It Used to Be’!!!
February 25, 2014 at 3:58 pm #93516mjb1124MemberThis should be a good move – as much as I love 50’s-60’s music and miss hearing it on commercial NYC radio, they do need to keep moving forward in time, and this will help them move more solidly into an 80’s-oriented direction. (Though Scott is also no stranger to oldies.) That said, I am also glad Dan Taylor is sticking around in middays.
Jingles-wise, I heard a “Scott Shannon/CBS-FM” Warp Factor DJ cut in the promos, but I think it was a splice job with the original Z100 cut. Would definitely love to hear some “Z Morning Zoo” resings!
February 25, 2014 at 4:30 pm #93517WAVAMemberI would hate to be the CBS guy who leaked the story yesterday.
MSS will do well but I do wonder why there wasn’t a ‘no compete’ clause in his PLJ contract.February 25, 2014 at 5:16 pm #93518LenGroatWAVA: the ‘no compete’ clause is a VERY pertinent point!
Can one of our US ‘JMadders’ clarify how WPLJ stands in ratings? I found this ‘top 10’ from September 2013:
1. WCBS-FM (6.3) 2. WLTW (6.1) 3. WBLS (6.0) 4. WHTZ (5.6) 5. WSKQ (4.7) 6. WAXQ (4.6)
7. WINS (4.2) 8. WKTU (4.1) 9. WCBS-AM (3.9) 10. WFAN (3.No sign of WPLJ ?
What IS interesting is that an OLDIES station (that SOUNDS like an oldies station) is TOP of the New York market, none of the euphemisms ‘Magic’ or ‘Smooth’ (sic) that Londoners get served up to pass as ‘big city radio’!
I’m sure there will be a few new jingles surfacing soon – watch the front page of JAM’s website?
February 25, 2014 at 5:40 pm #93519WAVAMemberCBS-FM has since dropped since that survey (NYC is a PPM market) and currently sits in 3rd at 5.4 and PLJ is 15th at 2.8.
February 25, 2014 at 8:33 pm #93520glenAre you sure they wont be from RW?
February 25, 2014 at 8:57 pm #93521mjb1124Member^I doubt it. There was some speculation on that front after Jim Ryan became the PD, but then they got the resings from Z100 and others last summer. If anything, it’s slightly more plausible that Scott Shannon would go for cuts from TM and/or Radioscape since he’s worked with them at PLJ and the True Oldies Channel respectively. But I think JAM will stay as CBS-FM’s primary jingle provider.
As for the “non-compete” issue, Scott Fybush on the Radio Discussions board posted that New York state law invalidated such clauses a while back, and that Scott’s contract with WPLJ is done. And regarding the ratings drop, while it’s certainly nothing to get alarmed about, perhaps Scott Shannon will prove to be a good “shot in the arm” for them. I don’t know how CBS-FM does in specific demographics, but my guess is that they’ve lost some older listeners without gaining as many younger ones. Shannon could change that.

February 25, 2014 at 9:53 pm #93523LenGroatGiven it’s a HERITAGE station I think CBS FM getting jingles from Reelworld would have the same affect as a British station employing a sportsman, a soap actress and a tv presenter…. as dj’s!
February 25, 2014 at 11:25 pm #93525PPMLooks like Scott will be using re-sings of the old Z100 jingles. Check out the end of Jim Ryan’s “Welcome Scott Shannon” announcement clip embedded in this web page:
February 26, 2014 at 2:38 am #93526glenWho’s place did he take?
February 26, 2014 at 3:15 am #93527jc_djmacGlen, to answer your question, he is taking over Dans job. Dan used to host the morning drive. I just herd the announcement along with the jingle resing from jam and I must say a job well done! jam is number 1 again!

Commonly known as “Goldmine” amongst collectors and beyond, that term was really designated for an automated format which PAMS syndicated in 1972.

The ID jingle package was actually originally produced for and known as The WCAU-FM Grid.February 27, 2014 at 8:52 pm #93537loujosephsYup it’s Pam’s as we also had goldmine at wror and krth
March 3, 2014 at 2:02 pm #93583mjb1124MemberBeen listening all morning. Sounds good so far. Not a full blown “morning zoo”, but compared to Dan Taylor’s previous show, it’s definitely looser, more chatty, less music intensive – and by extension, less jingle intensive. BUT, there are some new resings from the Z packages. Will try to get some audio up soon
