Talking of how good the KOST JAM sound is, I'm doing a regular podcast for family and friends back home and have had some JAM personal cuts produced to give some personality to the production, one of which is the TOH from Today's Coast (cut#11). Here it is for you to enjoy and it sounds just awesome – the orginal was produced in 1996;
Jon did a great job in getting this produced and sent them to me a day before I left London which was just brilliant.
Enjoy!
Cheers, Paul.
Love it, love it, love it !
You`ve got some “class” personalised jingles from JAM now Paul and that`s a great idea doing a “road trip podcast” for your family and friends, incorporating a JAM jingle in the mix.
It`s interesting to see how jingles have developed and being used in different ways nowadays. A family podcast jingle is a long way from when I used to sit there with my cassette machine, recording Radio 1 JAM jingles off medium wave broadcasts !

Paul this jingle just bursts out with “Class”. I love the ending “America” it's like the cream on top..so smooth and typical Jam.

I have RW One for my CHR and had it for my AC, and while the CHR stuff is great, I was very disappointed in the AC product. The vocals especially were never quite right. (I did have a traditional syndicated AC package from RW prior to going RW One, and it was well produced, so perhaps it was just the RW One stuff.)
I'll be totally honest (and probably get my ass flamed off for it): I absolutely love me some JAM, but I've been pretty disappointed in the new AC product from Dallas over the past few years. In fact, that was a definite factor in our going to RW. BUT…I'm really quite encouraged by the one new KOST custom cut heard here. I like it quite a bit and can't wait to hear more!

The point is to be honest, that a lot of brass neither doesn't fit todays AC artists. When I hear Mika, Matchbox 20, Avril Lavigne or Train I always hear more string based instruments, piano, guitars. But it isn't a warm sound.
You say that but, playing devils advocate… There are loads of fairly current tracks with brass in. Just listen to anything Mark Ronson produces. Any Winehouse's version of Valerie for example still gets played loads on the radio and that's dripping with brass.

That's true Andy like Michael BublĂ© and other 'new soul' artists, well put! … But scrolling through our playlist gives an overall piano/guitar feel and it is very hard to find JAM quality jingles with this musical feel in it, especially when you don't have the budget to do a custom…
@ LenGroat thanks for sharing your musical knowledge and insights, the're always very clear and true!

@ MarcMannetje
Thank you for the compliment. Although some people on here distinguish between 'professional' and 'fan' I feel a lot of the 'fans' have heard and learned from so many more jingles (why and how they work) that they know a great deal more than some 'profesionals' at modern 'jingle' companies.
The collosal output of timeless jingles from JAM for KOST is a feat no other jingle company ever has or will come close to for one radio station. Some of my favourite Trent/GEM jingles were those using KOST packages. The semi-jazzy – keyboard – strings – slightly soulful sound of the packages would fit perfectly on Smooth Radio who play a high percentage of music in that style from the 80s and 90s.

One of my all time favourite KOST cuts sung for both Trent and GEM so it could be used in split as well as in the daytime ~ it fitted perfectly in BOTH formats.

MemberLen, David & jingle fan – many thanks for your comments. Becoming a jingle consultant would be a dream job for me. Might choose that career path once I win the Euromillions this weekend

Thanks Len for sharing this. I really enjoyed using JAM to, they really add quality to your station.
I share your opinion about the vocal quality of RW, it is over processed. Maybe this is also due to modern times were everything seems to be screaming (TV, newspapers, ads) and peace and quitness are overwhelmed by this new younger style?
In my opinion AC station vocals have to have harmony, prevalence and body. It takes a lot of effort to get it done, but the effect is a much more mature authentic sound with authority…

Sorry I haven't checked in for a while. Just wanted to send an update. I'm told JAM is working on new jingles for KOST and that we went to our All Christmas format today at 5pm PST. This is significant because we are back to JAM holiday jingles at the top of the hour and at our weather break although we're not allowed to use our jock-name jingles to exit as we used to. We are still using some RW product, but we're mainly JAM now and when our contract runs out with RW in December I'm expecting that we'll pull all of that off the air.
Happy holidays, Bryan

Thanks for sharing this Bryan. Except from the fact that it will improve the 'stationality' of KOST, there are still some stations here in Europe using the KOST signature sound, they will be thrilled hearing that there will be new sequals coming up…

Pitty, Reelworld has always sounded more today. Hopefully KOST will realize this.

It's great to hear KOST going back to JAM, though I'm a RealWorld fan they should have never given up on JAM. On the other hand, the newest package that they are going to be aired soon sounds more hot AC-ish than the previous packages that JAM did. I think it's due to the addition of the CHR-friendly songs that were added to the playlist on the station, like Katy Perry's “California Gurls” and Bruno Mars' latest single “Just The Way You Are”.
In my opinion, I prefer the older sounding KOST jingles than the one they will are about to go on the air in the near future. JAM should have remixed some of the older ones with their current vocal group in order to keep its signature sound. That is one reason why I sometimes do not like the way AC radio sounded today.

As I stated before, the RW product we recieved was dreadful with a full 98% of what they sent us being far below the quality of product that JAM has done for us. You may want to re-read my post regarding the quality issues we had. As for being “today”, well I don't agree there either as most of the product we and many AC's play is still very light music, and for the most part still from the 80's and 90's, so the RW cuts would literally blow the first 3 notes of just about any song played out of them. JAM produces new packages based on what the client wants, so I would blame the end user for the packages that you can choose off the shelf.I've heard past product from RW that was pretty good, but the AC One jingles they pushed on us were horrible.
One more thing, I don't think that jingles should perfectly match the music a station plays. I believe the big job for jingles is to get from one source to another while leaving a lasting impression in the listener's mind. A good song, or jingle does that.
A good package adds excitement to a station's programming. It also helps in branding it. It should be the best product you can get for such a job. For us, that comes from JAM.

MemberReelWorld's jingles might be more “today”, but JAM's are more timeless. And KOST is a station that caters to a more mature audience, and plays a variety of music from several decades. The RW cuts stuck out like a sore thumb next to a lot of the older and softer music they played.
I've listened to the stream recently, and I'm astonished at how much softer KOST is than its sister station WLTW across the country. With that in mind, I definitely take back anything I said about the older KOST cuts sounding out of place. That said, a more uptempo sound could definitely work too, as long as it's done with the class I expect from JAM. I can't wait to hear what they have in store once “the season” is over.

This is THE BEST news I heard in long… long time. I look forward to hear these new jingles for KOST. However, since I am a Canadian citizen, I won't have a chance to listen online. For some reason, KOST doesn't allow listeners from other countries than United States to be connected anymore, through the web. I know that it has something to do with regulations, but it is very sad indeed.
Have a great weekend everyone! I know that I've been away from this website for a year or so. My schedule was very hectic in the last few months and it kept me away from my hobby. Also, I must say that until recently, after listening to some new jingle packages from companies all over the world, I was a little disappointed about the way this field had changed in the last few years. I was thinking inside: Where has all the melody gone? Will those rich harmonies from the 80s or 90s be back at some point in jingles?
Fortunately, when I was reading this thread, I had my answer. From that moment, I knew that being patient pays off.

Yes I echo bossjock. It's great to see you on here again Thierry. Let's hope that 2011 sees the return of the harmony in Jingles. When listening to Steve Wright, think it was yesterday he had a group on who were releasing a “Barber shop ” disc or whatever they are called nowadays. Wouldn't JAM fit in well if this catches on.

Good to see you back in Jinglemad land Thierry, I was looking at your stats and it was March 2010 the last time you posted, welcome back sir !
BTW it`s the same for us in the UK we cannot hear KOST either, although there are ways of still listening which has been discussed previously by using proxy servers etc…

Thank you guys! It is so good to be back. Sometimes, I wonder if I shouldn't drop other services (that take too much of our time these days like Facebook, Twitter, etc.) I missed you too, sincerely. I was only trying to survive
to my schedule. Bizarre life, isn't it? Too many things and so much to see. So much to discover with the Internet,
but so little time.By the way, I posted a new montage this morning to the site; it is a special one for Christmas. Naturally, KOST
is among my favorites in this montage – which should normally appears soon to all members, once approved. Thanks again for your kind words. Much appreciated!

MemberIndeed “Welcome Back” Thierry!
Excellent montage too – so many items so very “sideways” from all the “usual stuff” on the circuit!
For those that may have struggled (!) with the intensity all the French/Canadian language posts on your Facebook page, will you be able to tell the story of your photo being up on that giant billboard a few weeks ago?!!

Bonjour Wixy:
You are so funny! Yes, I am on Facebook. On a giant billboard as well…
Hopefully you won't believe all the things you see there.

EDIT:- now done

Thank you!
I think the problem occured when I converted from wav to mp3. It is the first time something like this happens to me. Sorry about that…
