As promised I’ll be posting a selection of mixes from our new Autumn package. It is to be phased in by early October, the 4th was the launch day of the original GEM-AM 26 years ago. It will take until then to post a selection of mixes as we had 60!
Since Pete ‘teased’ us with his amazing re-sing I’ll work backwards here and for the first cut post just a solo – it might be from the front, middle or end of the cut – only clue it’s an old PAMS! Which package, and who sang this originally? Let’s limit guesses to under 55s as it might be easy for over 55s !?
September 21, 2014 at 9:18 am #95809LenGroatYeah! That was quick for a young ‘JingleMaddun’ Linden!
It’s the (optional) solo open to PAMS Sono Magic Series 22 Cut 8
https://soundcloud.com/len-groat/smashing-c
But the demo on pams.com does not have the solo. To try and capture something reminiscent of the Jean Oliver sound I suggested it be “a la’ Jean Oliver/ Doris Day/ Dinah Shore” as it gave the soloist more chance to add their style to it. I always remember Abby Homes’ solo on the the name ‘Glo Ri – a- Hun -nif -ford on an old Radio 2 package – she added so much to it with her phrasing. I’m delighted with the way Abby did it, and the PAMS feel on the whole cut – one I’ve known and loved for nearly 40 years, but our re-sing is an amazing FIFTY TWO years after the original! Great to finally have it for our station, and we have several very usable mixes thank to Jon.
September 21, 2014 at 11:45 am #95812GrahamCollinsA fabulous jingle and a good choice for SGGAM. The original is just spell-binding:
September 21, 2014 at 12:53 pm #95814Jim DonahueVery nice Len.
September 21, 2014 at 2:11 pm #95816ratnobMemberLoving ’em.
September 21, 2014 at 7:33 pm #95819IainJohnstonNo matter what one might think of “modern” jingle production “techniques”, what stations today “want”, and all the other things we might “heartilly debate” on JM…
…when one hears a professional singer “recreate” a vocal sound “texture” and melody with such clarity and quality, no matter how “old” chronologically the original might be, its a treat to one’s ears – its “shivers down the spine” stuff
In the UK, the only “place” I think I’ve heard in recent years where a “house band” of musicians and singers have an ability to utterly “get” a classic vocal or instrumental sound is on BBC TV’s “Strictly Come Dancing” – sometimes they “sound more like the real thing than the real thing”. One wonders what that calibre of “session people” would ever have been like in the jingle business…
September 21, 2014 at 8:29 pm #95820scotronMemberHi Len. Iain has put it very well above. The vocal by Abby is superb. Can’t wait to hear more cuts from this package. Think I need to look at a PAMS personal cut now.
September 21, 2014 at 8:35 pm #95821UKJinglesMemberHow many cuts have you purchased this time Len?
Don’t say seven!! )September 22, 2014 at 6:16 pm #95823LenGroatThanks fellas! I know I’m an ‘antique dj’ and all those who have ‘grown up’ with the Global/Bauer stations don’t ‘get’ this but believe me there is still a TON of stuff in the JAM/PAMS catalogue that ‘works’ on our oldies station.
Pete, it was ‘seven’ but one of our dj’s has ordered ANOTHER cut – so it will be 8!
Next cut? What better than one from PAMS ‘all time classic’ Series 18 that I’ve not heard a re-sing of for ages?

Hi Len
Enjoying your new package so far, as for Series 18 , this must be the first time I have ever heard a full group sing on this cut
Can I assume an alternative Sonovx version is on the way ?
Best
Martin
September 22, 2014 at 10:17 pm #95827JohnnyJingleA fabulous jingle and a good choice for SGGAM. The original is just spell-binding:
Any chance you could post your morning jingle that goes something like “Early morning music with Graham Collins………” – love that one but keep missing it.
Thanks in advance
September 22, 2014 at 10:44 pm #95828GrahamCollinsHere you go…. This is my re-sing of JAM’s Right On Q cut#12:
September 22, 2014 at 11:10 pm #95830JohnnyJingleAh that’s the one – thanks very much, never fails to wake me around 5am !
Smashing harmonies.
September 23, 2014 at 1:05 am #95831Tracy CarmanMemberBy the way… It’s PAMS Series 23 (not 22):
WKBW – PAMS Series 23 “Sono Magic” Accappella – Blooper & Final (Jean Oliver)As for PAMS Series 18 “echo” cut being fully sung w/o sonovox:
WHYN – PAMS Series 18 “Sonosational” Echo cut w/o Sonovox (Circa 1961)September 23, 2014 at 11:26 am #95833LenGroatHi TC – many thanks for the Jean Oliver solo audio – her voice REALLY sends shivers up my spine – amazing to think it was 53 years ago.
I put ‘Series 22 #8’ as that was where I referenced it on Jon’s site from the WQXI version – which of course does not have the solo open! All the station versions I’ve heard seem to omit this, and no one seems to have sung any other line there? Yet, construction wise it makes a perfect slow open for a lively jingle – and the solo voice is VERY attention getting!
As the PAMS Numbered series page explains “Series 22 and 23 were made for WKBW at the same time. Instead of sonovox, 23 incorporated sound effects into the rhythm of the cuts to create “animated magic”. Very confusing for today’s collectors so it’s fortunate we have connoisseurs like you and Jon to explain the finer points of these great old packages.
By the way – Happy Birthday for yesterday TC!
The W H Y N Series 18 version sounds like it was not ‘stacked’ for the first part?
Now Martin & Linden – I wonder ~ DID we get a sono version of the Series 18 cut?
September 23, 2014 at 7:52 pm #95836LenGroat“DID we get a sono version of the Series 18 cut? “
Of course we did just ‘teasing’…
….. like Pete Wilson!
https://soundcloud.com/len-groat/series-18-cut-16-a
And if you compare it to the cut above you’ll hear Jon did us the station name in sonovox too ~ thanks Jon!!
We LOVE the re-sings!
September 24, 2014 at 10:33 pm #95843Tracy CarmanMemberI was hoping you had done! LOVEEEE it Especially the “Solid Gold GEM AM” in Sono. Sounds great Len. Now you have to show us the rest
By the way… It’s PAMS Series 23 (not 22)
I always thought it was Series 22
It is PAMS Series 22. Indeed backing tracks for Series 22 & 23 were cut in the same session and they were on the same reel so I goofed. I stand corrected!
September 25, 2014 at 11:30 am #95848bossjockMemberExcellent resings Len – thanks for sharing. I’m looking forward to hearing some more!!
September 25, 2014 at 12:06 pm #95851LenGroatLinden & Bossjock: thanks for the comments!
TC: thanks – and I can see where the confusion lay, such a large package, and a complete set of alternates. In its writing it’s a brilliant, complex package, so much superb/ overlapping instrumentation from a lot of instruments. The mix below has the instrumental tail out, and I (think) I can hear muted trombones (?) trumpets (?) harp, flutes (?) and other brass…

Another new PAMS re-sing soon!
September 25, 2014 at 10:55 pm #95855GrahamCollinsI don’t think it’s advertising Len, it seems to be related to what is similar to the file that you have just uploaded based on the tags that you give it….. I get the same file played after every track I upload but it is just someone else’s jingle, not an advert put there by Soundcloud. I agree with you though, bloody annoying.
September 26, 2014 at 5:17 pm #95864LenGroatOkay, ‘tease’ time, rolling out the next cut from our ‘Autumn package’ and since PAMS Series 22 is topical, let have another from PAMS Series 22 !
https://soundcloud.com/len-groat/pams-series-22-cut-20
As far as I know this was never actually sung for any UK pirate stations in the 1960s but un-licenced versions were heard a lot and most ‘antique anoraks’ know this cut? It was not sung for Radio1 but did any other UK station have it since?
IF we’d had commercial radio in the UK earlier (there was a BBC monopoly) I’m sure this would have been a VERY well-known package!
September 27, 2014 at 4:05 am #95871JohnLAnother Great choice (Enjoying all the PAMS classics), but this Series 22 track somehow always sounds incomplete without the steel guitar note tagged onto the end as was the case in many versions, including ours!

September 27, 2014 at 12:23 pm #95872LenGroatJohnL: thanks for posting your version! It’s such a fun, fluidly written jingle , catchy and a true classic.
Linden: thanks for the 2 original station examples- interesting to compare the vocal textures now, and then.
So the ‘order’ is for a mix with Sonovox ‘call and response’ + the steel guitar tag on the end? I’ll see what I can do!
September 27, 2014 at 12:29 pm #95873ratnobMemberWonderful. That’s all.
