      Guys,

As I will be shortly changing telephone/internet provider, my web site at its current BT address (http://www.mark.hodgkinson2.btinternet.co.uk) will cease to exist. Unfortunately, my new provider doesn't provide free web hosting so I'm looking for advice please of the best place to host my web site where I can use an FTP client to edit/upload to my site.

Nothing will happen too soon as my current contract with BT has a few months to run yet, but I want to set the wheels in motion with moving my web site.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

      Regards,
      Mark

Mark – and other jingle website owners – would a service such as a hosted site on yourname.jinglemad.com be of any use?

I've used EUKHOST for a few years, and they're reasonably reliable and cheap. http://www.eukhost.com/cpanel-web-hosting.php

I use http://www.krystal.co.uk for web hosting – which is fairly cheap and easy to use.

I'm not yet 100% sure what to do with my web site; I could certainly afford to pay for hosting it via one of the providers suggested, as the annual savings I will make by swapping phone/internet provider will cover the cost and then some.

Roy, your idea of my site being hosted on JingleMad sounds interesting. Can you provide more details?

Sorry for the late response here to your reply; I must have missed your post when I was ill last week.

I've been giving my web site some thought again.

I know we’re going off the subject of jingles here on a tangent, but can anyone help explain to me in laymen’s terms how web sites work with regards to domain names and web hosting as I’m getting confused. Is there a good web site out there that explains things clearly?

I trust I’m correct in thinking that the web hosting is a server where the web site files are stored and you pay so much for the privilege of someone storing your files.

What I don’t understand is how the domain name thing works. For example if you purchase a domain name, can you just then go along to any web hosting company and set up your web site with your purchased domain name?

Yes, that's right Mark. For my website I first purchased (and continue to renew) the domain name from http://www.123-reg.co.uk My hosting account is with http://www.hosting-unlimited.net (£23 per year), where I upload all the files to.

In my control panel of 123-reg.co.uk I change the “nameserver” section to the “nameserver” provided by the hosting company, and then two are then joined. My domain now points to my hosting account.

Simply YES – the “domain name” is totally unique to its registered owner as long as the annual fees are paid, otherwise it can be offered for resale by the appropriate Naming Authority.
(If you ever want to “see yourself”, use the WHOIS service to plug-in your domain name and it'll show who your name is registered to, and who & where its hosted – e.g. go to http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp and type in http://www.jinglemad.com and it'll show all the registered details for this domain ).

As Rob says, you can go to absolutely any Hosting Service of your choice, and sign up with them (free or otherwise), and via them link your domain name to their server(s).

The big Master DNS (Domain Name Service) servers around the world pick up on your domain name and will
direct any search or URL traffic to your webspace via secondardy DNS servers etc.

Though free or cheapo host services will not let you do as much as paid-for ones!

Thanks for the information guys; I think I'm beginning to get the hang of all this now!

I have now completed step 1 of setting up my new web site; I have purchased the domain http://www.markhodgkinson.co.uk with http://www.123-reg.co.uk.

Hosting with http://www.hosting-unlimited.net for £23 per year doesn't seem like a bad deal Rob. Will I be able to use my FTP Client software with this hosting package to merely upload files to the server? I trust that when you sign up, they will give you the server details to enter in the nameserver” section of the 123-reg.co.uk control panel?

The Mark Hodgkinson Web Site has now moved to it's new home at http://www.markhodgkinson.co.uk

The old web site address still works for the time being, but it automatically forwards you to the new address.

Please can web masters update their links accordingly.

                              Thanks.
