Len, thanks for posting the audio, I think it was worth the wait!
Graham, thanks for the edit! The new vocals are great! IMHO far better than the WMGK original but…. I can’t help thinking the Radio 2 class of 76 is yet to be surpassed :)

So Prompted by my previous random comment, I have edited the JAM Magic Music demo and replaced all bar cut 6 with Radio 2 versions.
Apologies for the audio quality, my source material is not as good as Grahams :)

          That is glorious.

For those who didn’t hear my 30-minute interview with Jon Wolfert about the development of JAM’s jingles over many years for Radio 1 and 2, I’ve now uploaded it to Soundcloud. He talks about Radio 2’s resings of ‘Magic Music’ and the various station logos around 8:30.

I hope Len and Jon won’t mind me taking this opportunity to showcase just how good and consistent the JAM sound really is. The front and back parts of this jingle are nearly 40, yes 40 years apart !

That is incredible. I doubt there are many jingle companies who could do accurately do that decades on.

What a lively and interesting topic, and good to hear the ‘Radio 2 demo’!

Geoff – thanks for reviving that ‘golden clip’ from your interviews with Jon – fascinating stories.

I think the love and care that goes into whatever JAM does (or did) is largely due to Jon’s very ‘considered’ approach to his art – he never ‘rushes’ into things… On some of my ‘briefs’ I’ve hastily suggested something that won’t work and he’s able to focus it all back to what WILL work. He’s one of the few writer’s able to still use real instruments, and group vocals to create PROPER jingles.

I had to listen to a certain BBC national station recently (they had yet another ‘gender balance’/non-dj person trying to present music) and in an hour I heard just ONE of the (supposedly) ‘award winning jingles’.

If jingles are not USED it tells me they just don’t work on air/ or the ‘dj’s’ have no idea how to use them – both need sorting! They still play ‘real’, ‘grown-up’ music, not synthetic noisy, non-musical ‘music’ ….. so some truly musical, memorable jingles are desperately needed. Maybe the people in charge might accept that what they have does not work/fit, and go back to JAM so Jon can create something worthy of a huge station?

              Rant over!

              Len

Len, from what a friend who works in BBC Broadcasting House Control Room regularly tells (or rants on ;-) ) on to me about presenters at the 2 national music networks, many of them need to learn how to use a studio broadcast desk & equipment properly let alone use jingles!

Levels all over the place, regularly way into the red saying they can’t hear output down their headphones despite everything being full up, way into the red & setting off alert alarms in control room.

Gawd knows what would happen if they had to go back to using Vinyl Records, Carts & Tape instead of computerised technology doing all the work for them.

I dare say similar could be said in some instances in commercial radio too lol! :-/
