I found the following clip on Soundcloud this morning and thought it would be of interest to some on here.
Back in 1995; RSL station Max FM hit the airwaves on 106 MHz in Southampton. The station was the creation of a group of people including Lee Moulsdale, Spencer Bignell (better known as Spencer Kelly – Ocean FM/BBC TV technology programme Click), Paul Morris, Paul Philips and Colin Hanslip.
This great 30 minute documentary on Soundcloud charting the history of Max FM includes plenty of clips of the station’s output including jingles. This station was a pioneer of local commercial radio in the city. Southampton proved then and continued to be a very difficult nut to crack for local commerical radio, as various stations/operators came and went over the years.

That’s an interesting upload, with a fair number of familiar voices.
August 11, 2015 at 2:31 pm #98253IainJohnstonI do believe I’ve got some of the Max FM JAM cuts in-the-clear … somewhere…
( I know there’s a least one “decent” dub “out there in collector-land…)Never heard the SUR student radio TM/C resings before though … got anything on that Jonno?
(…or might TC have them lurking on an as-yet un-packed pallet?)August 12, 2015 at 7:45 am #98254jonnoMemberAuthorNever heard the SUR student radio TM/C resings before though … got anything on that Jonno?
(…or might TC have them lurking on an as-yet un-packed pallet?)Sadly not Iain… that was new to me as well when I heard it. Would be fantastic if they do exist and could be unearthed. A great example of a small station sounding big!
August 12, 2015 at 10:03 am #98255jonnoMemberAuthorHowever, I did find an amusing website; memories of Radio Glen (which is where student radio in Southampton started).
http://www.interestingelectronics.com/old/radio_glen_memories/radio_glen.htm
Check it out for equipment and jingles (but who made them?) nostalgia !

August 12, 2015 at 6:36 pm #98257IainJohnstonRight – don’t know where some of the “proper jingles” had their vocals done, but the 2 “wobbly” cuts are rips
of the Good Morning cut from Radio Clyde’s 1978 Emison custom, which was a bizarre re-hash of the original
1973 launch custom. Someone clearly either had the tracks, or edited the “mixout versions”; the singer does
actually sound like he can sing (better than *some* of this century’s vocalists at least…).Other ones? Seem to be “proper” jingle backing tracks. Origin? I don’y know.
August 12, 2015 at 7:12 pm #98258glenWho did the Radioglen jingles?
August 13, 2015 at 9:37 am #98259jonnoMemberAuthorI’m wondering if the Radio Glen jingles came from Cath Baxter. Listen to the Viking ’84 package; the music has a similar style (although that could be down to the era when they were made) and the male solo vocal sounds similar?
However, the production on the Viking package sounds so much better, but maybe that’s just because the Radio Glen jingles are a cassette copy of wobbly mono carts making them sound less polished.
Who knows?
August 13, 2015 at 9:35 pm #98262SpoonsFunnily enough – I was only listening to a minidisc put together by my old school mate who worked at Max the other day. In 1998, he sat in the studio and played me lots of the cuts and latest JAM demos. In 1993, when he was starting at uni in Southampton, he taped me loads of jingles from the stations in the area – Ocean, Power, Spire… etc. including those FANTASTIC SUR jingles from TMCI. I’ll post some if I get chance.

August 20, 2015 at 12:55 pm #98294IainJohnstonThe “source” of the “wibblywobbly Glen” cuts – apologies for the “reference use only” audio quality – I had to dig deep…
