superb and what a great video montage as well !!! I’m awaiting delivery of another cut from TM Studios via iJingles, there’s something about the TM sound that’s always had me hooked, anyway this is a truly brilliant demonstration of what the guys in Dallas can do for any of us, ooooo we love the jingles !!! Len, did you get a good number of mixouts from that epic number ??? that’s always impressed me also, even more so via iJingles, for some Viking FM cuts I had re-sung there were just SO many mixouts …
March 4, 2012 at 10:48 pm #82547BigdaveSpotted the link to Trent 1 Len! Mind you,I would!
Great stuff from the best voices in the business, and I’m looking forward to hearing it being used on air at TrentSound soon!
March 5, 2012 at 9:28 am #82557LenGroatGreat to see it’s got you ‘grinning’ and ‘singing’ ! I’m posting a clip of it today on Facebook and Twitter and asking if any of the quasi-national stations can afford a song !?
Surely with breaks 2-3 minutes long it would be a GOOD thing to play somethng with words and memorability every few hours? The FIRST station to get a song would REALLY stand-out…. Of course THIS song is 70s / swing style, but there arew DOZENS of great station songs from TM, JAM et al in Dallas they could buy off the shelf for what they pay their breakfast presenters for just one show!
Some background on the song courtesy TC : “I believe Tom Merriman originally wrote the cut. It was sung as a solo by Dan Alexander originally then later voiced by the full group. The track was produced as part of a Las Vegas/Los Angeles session… not by Dallas musicians. If I had to put a date on it, I’d say it was produced in 1971. The oriiginal sheet music for this stuff is long gone. The only ones around who were singing on those original sessions would be Judy Parma, Brian Beck. The rest are either retired or deceased.”
Thanks TC !
BigDave, yes I squeezed in Trent/GEM lines right next to each other !
Simon, I had 20 versions, long / short songs, jingles, acapellas.. here’s another!
March 5, 2012 at 11:34 am #82561bossjockMember20 versions! Wow – this just gets better and better – a superb acapella! Thanks for sharing Len.
March 5, 2012 at 12:18 pm #82562IainJohnstonMemberI’ve just attempted to load the original TM demo for the WMAQ “Sound of Chicago” custom on to the JM ‘Cloud.
Just in case it (still) doesn’t work from this machine, here’s the direct link…
http://snd.sc/AbDuwqAn astounding FORTY years on from its first publication, Len’s “masterpiece” can be heard in it’s 1972 original form as the last cut on this 12-minute long “traditional” demo. Really good jingles DO stand the “test of time”
March 5, 2012 at 1:50 pm #82565bossjockMemberA great piece of jingle history. Thanks wixy – and Len’s resing sounds “out of the box” fresh too. Great stuff.
March 5, 2012 at 2:36 pm #82567LenGroatChic Cargo Goww Yeeaahhh.. ! Firstly I did not know it was 1972 !! Golly, I was 24 and still in uni/hospital radio when it was created…
Thanks Iain for the full demo ~ believe it or not I’d never heard it. To me it’s a wonderful distillation of Broadway, Hollywood, the 5th Dimension style, and the ‘brassy’ US ‘bands’…. such as ‘Chicago’ ! Tom Merriman wrote so distinctively, and adventurously, and WHAT a 100% ‘in your face’ package it was..
To me many of the ‘jingles’ are actually mini-songs, and so work even better as they are more hummable/memorable. The tracks inspire the singers to hits the high and lows vocally. Some of the passages with just rhythm, can take a very variable number of syllables (‘it’s the loop, the lake….” etc) so are easy to adapt.
I was fortunate to stay at Tom & Jackie’s home 3 times, but unaware of material like this never ‘pinned him down’ about it. I do, however, recall buying him a CD set of Max Steiner’s 30s-50s film music as a ‘thank you’ gift, which he loved and acknowledged as one influence on his own ‘style’.
Bossjock – thank for the comments; I think it’s fair to say that one long song is really only like buying 3 separate jingles as regards ‘useable’ bits
By the way Iain, I think to post the ‘blocks’ from SoundCloud you need to NOT tick the box next to ‘Use the HTML5 widget’? Try it and see if it works?

March 5, 2012 at 8:14 pm #82574dianablanton1984MemberI cried when I heard this song while viewing the jingle session video on YouTube. Pure class!!!!
March 6, 2012 at 1:29 pm #82590LenGroatI get this wonderful double-mix emotion Diana… partly Nostalgic, partly NOW as I just HAVE to sing along…. I think I must have been a jingle singer in a previous life.. .sadly the voice was not re-born with me
Of course we ‘specialists’ on this (unique) site, understand the HOW and WHY of jingles rather more than the ‘listeners’. On Twitter Richard Horsman has commented of the full song: “So wrong it’s right; can’t decide if LenGroat’s ‘Radio Like It Used To Be’ jingles are affectionate homage or pastiche”.
Saying ‘pastiche’ is probably because of the title of Moyles ‘Cheesey song” but the fact is Moyles plays SEVEN minutes of this programme song every day and it’s not affected the ratings ONE BIT, despite the ‘ton of yap’ the show often consists of (personal opinion).
So why are the quasi-national stations so SCARED to have Fun, USE SONGS, but instead use Blingles, and allsoundexactlythe same…?
The new package for Downtown Radio (just unveiled elsewhere*) must be one of the dullest ever, no variation of any sort, vocally or instrumentally, only a couple of singers (not jingle singers) They sound to me as if they are written in a ‘minor key’ (?) Perhaps a muso could let me know if that is the case; certainly they sound SAD.
So, LET’S BRING BACK THE RADIO STATION SONG.. I will ‘Blog’ on it later this week!
On a positive note, a ‘double-donut’ mix of the RLIUTB song… for those who like to hear “ALL the cuts” !

March 7, 2012 at 10:16 pm #82622sparryOne word for that, Brilliant!
March 8, 2012 at 11:13 pm #82631logikreaderLen, Sean,
I just heard the complete cut and I must say this is a work of art! With all the mixouts (20 versions!) there is so much replay value from one tremendous cut. It was an honor to have heard it. Thanks so much for posting it LG, and thanks to Sean and iJingles for producing it so so well.
March 10, 2012 at 2:26 pm #82585simon_t123MemberLen re: the Downtown cuts you mention, they’re from Chris Steven’s (ex TM) jingle-co ‘Ignite’ I’m fairly sure he’s got a deal in place for TM singers to sing cuts for him, and he offers UK sings, and from what I’ve heard their UK sings would trump original Mancunian sings I have to say … However musically I’m with you on the Downtown cuts specifically, there are one or two gems on their site client wise, I wonder if it is the client in this case that’s specified the package sound ? Thinking along the lines that this is a heritage ILR in N.I (which to me have sounded as bad over the years in imaging and positioning terms as many similar stations in Scotland !) maybe it’s just the style they wanted ???
On a more positive note … you just can’t fault that TM song there … the mixouts are brilliant, 1 cut I had from the Viking FM expansion had around 20 mixes & versions, plus with the acapellas supplied you can load up into audition and make your own
And finally on a personal note, without disclosing the actual figure involved, thinking along the lines of what an iJingle costs was the cost of your cut here in proportion to that ? or would we need a mortgage for the same haha … The reason I ask, is that both with the Viking stuff, The Bee stuff I’ve had done and the South Beach I’m awaiting being the standard price (plus TM upgrade fee) I find iJingles to be providing great Dallas value I’m awaiting South Beach cut 11 which is a 60 comprised of x2 30 second ramps sung at the end of each 30, but these are provided split as x2 seperate & musically different 30 second ramps with full sing, plus cut-downs and mixes all at the normal rate !!! I’m enamoured with the TM / iJingles product for this reason lols !!!
Happy jingling Len, I was enjoying this week walking off many calories whilst listening to the collection of recently emerged GEM / JAM montages … and some cuts can get your spine tingling whilst walking haha, excellent
March 10, 2012 at 3:31 pm #82576LenGroatLogik : thank you !
Simon: I did not realise the Downtown cuts were connected with Chris Stevens, but in any case we can only be honest in our opinions. I suspect that as you suggest they are ‘what the client wanted’. Chris kindly sent me the demo jingles TM made for Smooth about 5 years ago, and they were excellent, but they stuck (then) with the now (seemingly extinct?) Bespoke company.
With Simon Bates on breakfast, and Chris ‘at the helm’, I’m at a loss to understand WHY Smooth don’t buy jingles that ‘fit’ Bates style : ie GREAT Dallas jingles !
“From what I’ve heard their UK sings would trump original Mancunian sings”
I’d have to disagree with you on that , no one can beat Steve Butler as a British soloist or group lead voice. he’s on the re-sings for Trent Sound…. and is still 100%
“On a more positive note … you just can’t fault that TM song there … “
Thanks, I ‘took a deep breath’, prayed the ‘Dallas magic’ of 1972 would ‘strike’ again (no Jackie Dickson as she’s retired..) and thanks to Greg Clancy re-creating all the vocal parts, the amazing group they assembled, and a lot of help from Sean at iJingles..
…………………….it StRuCk !!!
“1 cut I had from the Viking FM expansion had around 20 mixes & versions”
Yes ! THAT is the kind of cut to go for ~ lots of lyric and track, and use the ‘bits’ !
“without disclosing the actual figure involved, thinking along the lines of what an iJingle costs was the cost of your cut here in proportion to that ?”
A song is (to me) sing-for-sing, better value than buying ‘several’ cuts JUST the end sing and and Y e ee a a hh h h from my song gives me the ‘jinglies’ !!
I’m completely happy with the price from both TM and JAM. The TM song is also TIMELESS, no station name or frequency, and the lyric should be useable in many ways… They can also re-sing some P & T stuff…. and I’m only now discovering all the choices from old TM 70s and 80s material…
“I’m awaiting South Beach cut 11 which is a 60 comprised of x2 30 second ramps sung at the end of each 30”
I look VERY forward to hearing them !
GLAD the GEM jingles are ‘keeping you fit’…

March 25, 2012 at 10:02 pm #83010Tracy CarmanMemberMarch 26, 2012 at 12:49 am #83015LenGroatWow.. jingle history…. the original version.
Thank you so much for sharing TC.
I can hear now how it was originaly envisioned, and the group singers pretty much stuck to Dan’s immaculate phrasing.
I was extremely fortunate to have Dan sing on some of our GEM-AM jingles in the late 80s / early 90s and to meet him. Sadly his modesty and my being ‘new in town’ and working meant I never had a chance to really ask questions or get to know him as I did Jackie & Tom who I stayed with. He did, however, sign my original Series 28 ‘Happiness Is’ box!
Magic days….. and I REALLY love my re-sing of this song.. listen to it EVERY day
Best wishes
Len
March 26, 2012 at 2:18 am #83016Tracy CarmanMemberGlad you enjoyed it, Len. I never met Dan during my Dallas trips as he was never a part of the sessions I sat in on, unfortunately.
Best,

March 30, 2012 at 10:51 am #83152LenGroatTC, really enjoying EVERY version of this song.. thank you.
The ‘girls’ on that WESA version are so together….
The way the cut was written gives so much room for lyric variation, it’s not tied to a specific number of syllables in places. Perfect for syndication then… or ‘personal cuts’ now!-
March 30, 2012 at 3:11 pm #83166Tracy CarmanMemberThe first version of the package I heard, Len. My brother went to school outside of Pittsburgh. Somewhere, in the dust piles, I have a STEREO copy of the package the program director copied for us from the station master. So many tapes… so little time!
March 30, 2012 at 9:05 pm #83181dianablanton1984MemberWell… Len, as I listen to JingleMad Radio, I keep getting your “Sound of Chicago” – “Radio Like It Used To Be” song played every single hour, and I’m afraid that the sounds of the TM singers are stuck in my head!!! Still a great song, nonetheless, but I feel that I’m getting what some call the “Earworm” effect, where a song or jingle gets stuck in your head and you can’t get rid of it! Quick! Somebody give me a jingle to get that song out of my head!!!
(to the rest of the jingle community: Sorry if I offended you with that comment!)
March 30, 2012 at 10:16 pm #83185LenGroatHave no fear Diana…. I got the ‘bug’… and am already looking at new goodies from 2 top Dallas jingle companies…
Will be hard to follow the “Sound of Chicago’ song.. but I’m working at it
March 31, 2012 at 2:13 pm #83214dianablanton1984MemberOK, Len, I trust you have something good at the end…
April 21, 2012 at 4:10 am #83770Tracy CarmanMemberMixed down from the original 8-track master session reel for your listening pleasure. Note that the horn and string overdubs were only done on the final good take. This is take number one…
