MemberI’ve always liked the song “Leave It” by Yes (from the album 90125), and the 1984 Radio One JAM cut based on that song for Tommy Vance’s “Into The Music” show. The show so good JAM named a jingle package after it!
I’ve had a go at mixing the two up, and it’d be interesting to know the story of that cut – did Radio One commission that cut, or was it one that Jon produced as a demo cut for Radio One? What are the rules if a jingle is inspired by a song? Did Yes or Trevor Horn like it, I wonder? One for Jon!

Cuts 1, 7, 9, 12, and 15 from the “Into The Music” demo were custom made for Radio 1 as part of the 1984 set. The Robbie Vincent cut ended up being demoed for “Warp Factor”.
Bizarrely, the “Yes” soundalike didn’t make it onto the demo, and the show itself was gone by late 1985, with Andy Kershaw filling Peel’s old Thursday slot.

Ha – loved this David. I’ve had the idea to do something similar with Alfasound vs the Pet Shop Boys for a while…
… so this was the kick I needed! haha.

MemberAuthorA few more. Firstly I was looking at Genesis albums after watching the BBC FOUR programmes, and someone was accusing Phil Collins of ripping off Sly and The Family Stone’s “Hot Fun in the Summertime” – (which he admits to on Wiki), that song title made me think of Turbo Z (unsurprisingly), so here’s a segue from one to the other, via Turbo Z cut 17.

Back to Yes – someone at Radio One (or JAM!) must be a fan….
Embedded at home.recnet.com/soundcloudFinally, for now – how many songs are there that have had TWO jingles inspired by them – there are 2 jingles in this Rush file – listen to the first 30 seconds or so:

Ha – no worries. You know, it makes you realise how accurate Alfasound’s take-off was. Super job by whoever arranged it. I can only assume Alan Fawkes – but who knows as it was quite a departure to normal Alfasound early 80s stuff.

Same here. My terrible musical knowledge of the period means that I hadn’t spotted the links between the songs and the jingles. The audio you’re all posting is really illuminating. Thank you!

MemberAuthorDigging up an old thread – I’ve done a couple more of these soundalike mashups, including Janet Jackson and Simple Minds.
I’ve put these, and the originals – some had been killed off by Soundcloud on account of using copyrighted (ahem) material, but are back up with shorter clips of the hit records. There seems to be q bit of a Steve Lipson/Trevor Horn connection between a few of them, so either someone at Radio One (or Jon) was a fan, in which case they could do worse than see his band Live sometime.

A JAM custom jingle “influenced” by a Scottish rock band’s track?
