As per the previous post someone posted on the forums a couple of months ago regarding to lack of imaging on CC stations, I have listened to several of their stations online, mostly AC stations and I have noticed that there are either lack of sweepers/jingles or just no jingles at all. Examples included are WLIT of Chicago, WLTW(which they haven't used jingles since day one), Lite FM from Atlanta, and a station out of the Binghamton, NY area.

In my opinion, it was a considerable mistake for Clear Channel to phase out all of the imaging on their stations, They are doing this because they are cutting costs, like sacrificing some of their on-air DJ's, PD's, and sales people. Therefore, CC is just dumb.

i don't know with other CC stations, ive “TRIED” their country stations, but their jingles are still up. WLIT specifically has reduced imaging. I hope reduced is the right word here, but there seems to be very obvious reasons for this.

The reason is HD! When you are broadcasting HD, it's self explanatory already to minimize audio imaging when your station's identification is already scrolling on the HD panel. Second reason, it's CC's “less is more” business model.

However, there are two new custom jingle packages up on Radioscape's website. It's for WUBL in Atlanta and
WMIL Milwaukee, both country stations. So in my opinion, I think it's just the AC stations that have reduced station imaging.

Now I would wonder if CC decides to ban jingles from their stations.

I don't think HD could be the reason. Probably less than 1% of radio listeners in the US even have HD radios.

The reason the amount of imaging has been reduced is that there has been a new corporate initiative from the head office, that micromanage all their stations. They've decided to declutter all their stations and focus more on 'the product' (the music they play), which means more back to back songs without interruption, limited talk by the DJ, less promos and less imaging. This is because PPM electronic audience measurement is currently being rolled out in the Top 10 markets so ratings are based on what people actually listen to rather than what they remember. Of course this is all nonsense as in the real world branding and packaging play an important part in determining consumption decisions, which is why companies spend billions to advertise on Clear Channel stations.

I agree mattii70, imaging is not only used to enhance station rememberance but also to create an emotional bond with listeners. I can understand however that ClearChannel decides to cut the costs to have the best return of investments on their stations, but when I see the WLTW-rating I have to admit there's more to radio than a very analysed playlist.

By the way: didn't Reelworld was about to create the first SUNG ID-package for WLTW?
