January 22, 2006 at 4:53 pm #25590RjMGreat to hear all the cuts online, and nice to hear the ramp versions too, as I’ve yet to hear those used on air. The previous Reelworld package for Key also had ramps, but for some reason these have never been featured online. A shame too that they haven’t put up the cuts lyriced for “The top ten at ten” and “The key to Manchester’s weekend”.
An nice enough package anyway. Similar style to Hallam FM’s recent custom, though this one does have the edge for me (nothing to do with hearing “Manchester” sung of course!) I Wonder why they opted for a 5 note sonic logo though, rather than 4, meaning “three” being sung as two syllables “thre-ee”
While I’m talking about Key 103 Reelworld packages, on their original 2001 package, any suggestions why a couple of the cuts (cuts #2, #6 & morning #3) on Reelworld.com feature different vocals to those which were played out on air? Did, as I’m guessing, Reelworld supply the package with alternative vocals on some cuts that were never played out?

January 22, 2006 at 7:22 pm #25591MartinSYes, it’s excellent to hear all the cuts online at last, given that the package first began to be aired around a month ago today. Must confess I e-mailed Reelworld last week to ask when it was likely to go online. I had a prompt reply saying – keep checking! Not the sort of thing I normally do, however this package is a little bit special for me personally, given the city and station.
With regards to the ramps Rob, I’ve heard a couple of them used on air so far. Flic Everett played the ramp version of cut 1 (minus the M#1HMS lyric) several times when she was filling in for James H Reeve a couple of weeks ago.
Great to hear the Top Ten at Ten versions and Key to Manchester’s weekend versions on air also! Basic versions of Cuts 8 and 9 can often be heard on the breakfast show with alternative “Toolan in the Morning” sings – they sound fab the way the lyrics are arranged, effectively giving a double sing. Also, I’ve heard Mike Toolan talk over a ramp bed version of cut 9 a couple of times.
It would be great to hear Key 103 user the ramp versions to kick off each hour, as I’m sure that would sound so powerful. Perhaps that may happen after the current run of Manchester Mystery voices?
The cut 1 featured on the Reelword site does seem to have more of the new sonic logo present in the end sing (behind the Key 103 lyric) than the one used on air. I’m guessing several alternative versions have been provided, as I’m sure was the case with the 2001 package (that you mention above Rob – not sure why though). The basic version of cut 1 used on air does seem to have a couple of seconds missing after the sonic logo compared to the one on the site, it goes from the logo straight into the fast drum beats.
Can’t recall hearing cut 11 on air as yet…. don’t know why as it’s cracking! Wonder if the odd vocally bit on this (between the “M#1HMS” and the “Key 103”) is actually meant to be anything in particular? Sounds like it could end in “Wilmslow”!
I’m a big fan of both the Key103 and Hallam FM packages. I think the Key 103 package is more ‘generic’ in it’s sound, and for that reason may probably be more re-useable and have a longer shelf life. I was slightly disappointed that the file names in temporary internet files did not contain cut names, like with the Hallam package. Had been curious as to what each of the cuts may have been called, now I’m left wondering whether or not they actually have names or not. They certainly do seem less ‘derived’ from particularly songs/artists than the Hallam cuts.
With regards to that sonic logo then… it’s certainly very catching and addictive. Love the fact that Reelworld have provided the stingers in the package. Not really sure about the 5 notes though. Is it supposed to be “Key One 0 Thr ee” or not? I’d originally thought it was maybe a “Manchester’s number one” condensed over less syllables. Now I’m beginning to think it probably is “Key One 0 Thr ee”. Thinking about it, I often used to whistle five notes along to the old Music4 Key 103 top of the hour vocal, rather than four.
All in all a fabulous package with loads of production value. Only minor criticism is that I would have liked to hear perhaps one or two more up tempo versions on the ramps, although I suppose a package like this is more about variation in the musical styles. Interesting that all of the cuts sound female dominated, where there is a mix of female and male on Hallam FM.
Would love to hear anymore comments about this package.
Now there’s just Radio Aire and Rock FM to sort out!
Cheers,
