Not sure how true this is, i heard that he changed his name from Peter Waters Dingley because he heard a tape of American radio jingles with that name being on the tape. Before that Peter Dingley had another other alias “Peter Dee”

Hi, yas I heard that story & it seems to be substanciated by Johnnie himself in his autobiography.
The other ( original) Johnnie Walker was an American DJ, now sadly deceased.
Ron O'Quinn gave Peter Dingley the mame of Johnnie Walker after bringing Namecheck tapes from American stations to SRE, just think if he had been given another name we could have “Boom Boom Branigan” on Radio 2 now !!

Primo has most of the story. The bizarre thing is that the station where the original jingles came from was WPTR in Albany, New York and this was where the legendary Roger Scott was doing his radio apprenticeship. His jingle was also dubbed and brought over to the UK. So not only do we have Peter Dingley adopting the name of Johnnie Walker but there was someone else over here pretending to be Roger Scott !

And if anyone can find their copy of the SRE Spot Productions “Thatman” package,
they'll hear the UK Johnnie Walker version of the WPTR cut; and likewise,
something incredibly similar on the David Arnold Radio West 1983(?) custom!
