This year’s British Radio Academy boss John Myers, former ‘guru’ of sMoOtH, Real, Century et al, soon to dj on Spectrum FM in Spain, is to do a Podcast on jingles!
On Twitter he has posted: “New RA podcast soon on Jingles… what is the best jingle package ever? Mine is JAM Breakthrough. Who should we ask to be on this podcast?”
I am sure you can guess WHO I suggested right away, make yours to him on Twitter.
I await the interviews with interest….

February 24, 2012 at 8:58 pm #82333timboCan I just say having not heard the Collector Tales series before I loved hearing those featured stories of getting into jingles…resonates so much with me (probably everyone else on here too). Thanks David a pointer towards that link, not sure how I have managed to miss that up until now.
February 25, 2012 at 12:13 am #82334LenGroatMore posts on John Myer’s Blog (above) where ‘the’ Colin Ridley made a (rare) internet appearance and asked about the Bespoke jingles on Smooth. John kind of ‘washed his hands’ of them ….
QUOTE:
“As you move up the management ladder you allow others to decide on the output. My view should not suggest that I am always right, it is just my view. Now if it was my own station, owned 100% by Myers Media and I could do what I wanted – just for me – then I might do something quite different. However, like most things in life, I have come to the conclusion that there are a lot more talented people than me deciding station output. It’s best to let them get on with it and opinions will always be there. “
Timbo: the ‘Tales’ was an exceptional series, and will become part of the UK radio history archive in time…
February 27, 2012 at 7:17 pm #82357LenGroatI know his report does not specifically cover jingles/ idents, but with the highly anticipated (John) Myers Report on BBC LR out today, I think we should accknowledge it on this site.
Maybe it’s a little in-depth of those who make one-line contributions here, but anyone annoyed by the shrinkage of iLR, and gross over-expenditure at managent level by BBC LR, surely must find it of interest?
If nothing else, chopping the middle tier of ‘suits’, and allowing more LOCAL control of BUDGETS (as John Myers suggests) would let the stations use some talented (currently unemployed) commercial presenters (on contracts !) and also get RID of the awful McCasso idents being forced on the presenters and listeners in the name of ‘economy’ !
Email me if you’d like a digital copy of the full report

February 29, 2012 at 11:29 pm #82398LenGroatUPDATE on the John Myers jingle podcast: some BIG names in the British jingle/radio world are being invited to nominate just ONE package as their personal favourite, and also they have to explain WHY. All done live and recorded for the podcast, it should be interesting, as AT LAST programmers are starting to focus BACK on identification.
More news next week.
