For those of you that don’t get to read The Radio Magazine, here is my jingle-related article that featured this week.

Thats’ an interesting article David, thanks for posting it on here as like many enthusisasts I don’t work in radio and would be unlikely to say the magazine.

Unfortunately I’m too young to remember much of the material from the 1970s and early 80s. The interesting period for me started in the late 80s (also when I was around age 12) when most of the commercial ILR stations in the UK split AM/FM frequencies and new stations started to appear as I was lucky enough to live in an area with an abundance of stations in earshot. I maintained my interest in the early 1990s when may of the smaller cities started to become home to ILR stations (eg. Minster & Lincs) and the regionals started to appear.

The worst bit for me was around the mid 90s when a certain national station stopped using JAM material and seemed, for a while, to slowly inspire a non sung jingle trend within the UK. I think a lot of people will agree that we can thankfully say that this trend is now being well and truly reversed with some of the top quality stuff currently being produced in the UK alone.

Re: Jingles and relationships, your not alone there! I’m pleased to say I have an extremely jingle tolerant other half- who’s not unknown to sing ’em! We just have a rule – no jingles before midday!

My 9 week old twins are having their diapers changed to the tune of TM Century jingles. I do the analog-to-digital transfers while they are up feeding in the middle of the night.
