      Hey kids…

I recently relocated to Miami FL, and my two resolutions for 2005 are to: A) Enjoy the sun and fun of tropical South Florida, and B) Get my entire jingle collection recorded onto my 100 gig hard drive. I’m living the first one everyday. But, the second will CERTAINLY be a year-long project (and that’s wishful thinking). However, I’ve managed to roll 180 different jingle masters so far.

This montage is just a TINY fraction of those 180 tapes. We’ve got JAM, TM, PAMS, Reelworld, Thompson Creative, Tanner, FirstCom, Killer Music, John Ritter, and even some orphan jingles whose parents I could not identify! It’s a pretty well balanced mix, hope you enjoy! More to come VERY soon…

Dude, now you have all that sun down in Miami, you’ll be as tanned as me soon…

I’m not sure about that WPLJ cut. Who did it and did that package ever air? Loved the 98 YCR Thompson cut though!

Also, which Power 92 is featured 3.42 in?

The PLJ cut is from Killer Music. It’s from a mini pakage which I love. I’d like to know if it ever aired as well. It’s circa 1990.

Killer Music churned out some good stuff, but I never knew they did stuff for ‘PLJ! I’ve never heard it on any Killer showreels or ‘PLJ airchecks. Maybe they were only used for a short time?

It’s a Mason montage, so I knew it would be excellent before I grabbed it! Looking forward to #5.

Hmmm…what happened to the reply I posted to Neal??? It went POOF! For anyone else interested, I’ll repeat:

That Killer Music jingle package for PLJ did in fact air, between 1990-1991. The top hour cut in my montage, however, did NOT. They ran it concurrently with “PLJ ’91” from TM. It was killed when Scott Shannon came in and kicked off Mojo Radio.

The “Power 92” in the montage is from JAM’s “Energy,” and sung for the former WGLU in Johnstown, PA. I also found their versions of “Z World,” and “Hit Power” in my bottomless pit of tapes.

I love the Jingleage series from JTM :)

Another great montage with lots of stuff I`ve never heard before. Sounds really good in the car, as I drive around the icey, snow covered North-East of England, thinking of that tropical sunshine in FL !

                  “P-L-J !

                  WPLJ – NEW YORK,NEW YORK!”

I always wondered what the story was about those cuts , Jeffro . I had them on a cassette back in the mid 90’s and did’nt know whether they’d been used between the Mojo Radio/PLJ ’91 cuts …

Another great montage from Jeffro the Diva!!!

Just one question, the WNBC TOH jingle (near the end of montage #4), was that originally planned to be in JAM’s “Nothing But Class” or was it just a custom jingle for WNBC? IMHO, I would prefer that TOH jingle over the actual one in “Nothing But Class” (not that the actual TOH was bad, it was quite good, but the other version blew my mind away).

                    Keep the jinglages comin’.

Great question! Wish I had a great answer. The path that jingle took getting to me is kinda wacky. I was on the air at WIMX in Harrisburg, PA in 1995…being goofy and playing a bunch of old, outdated jingles on the air – as I did often…confusing most listeners, I am sure. These jingles came from the dozens of previous formats we had gone through. We had a slew of JAM, TM, Tanner, even Firstcom jingles…and I played them all. In the middle of all this, a guy named Bobby calls up the request line and says “check your front door…there’s a gift for you there.” I sent one of my partners out there, and he brought back a reel labelled “Jingles For Jeffro.” We threaded it up live on the air, and there was a tight montage of….well, why tell you when I can just PLAY it for you! (Warning, I really sucked back then…not the BEST radio (except for the jingles part!)

ANYWAY, it was in the montage you hear on the tape. We later got the actual masters copied…and I don’t HONESTLY know the origin. It was on a reel with the Nothing But Class jingles, and is SIMILAR to the top hour jingle of that package – but is DIFFERENT! For those who didn’t hear the montage, this is the jingle in question:

Hmmm. I dunno, either. Or at least I don’t remember. It’s been a long time. Jon Wolfert always let me go a little nuts (okay – VERY nuts) with lots & lots of alternative mixouts. So, although I’m pretty sure we never AIRED that iteration, perhaps we did mix it that way and took it home and possibly someone put it in circulation somehow, somewhere. When personally involved with custom pkgs, I’ve typically mixed more cuts that DIDN’T air than did air. Just a pig, I guess.

Funny (maybe) story: the chimes had been retired from WNBC Radio 2 WNBC PD’s (Bob Pittman & John Lund) prior to my watch. In fact, WNBC went jingle-free thru the early W NNN BC era. I agreed and didn’t use them for some time either. Then when we brought jingles back – we REALLY brought ’em back. Chimes and all. The REAL chimes.

I borrowed a (long since stuck on a shelf in the NBC Archives – you’d have thought I was asking to take the Mona friggin’ Lisa to Dallas for the day!) copy of the old radio network chime box. And you hear THAT at the top of the TOH jingle. For all we know, they may have been the SAME physical chimes that preceded Bob Hope or Jack Benny or Toscanini broadcasts. But for many cuts, Jon had to rent some big honkin’ pipe chimes. Brought them to the JAM studios in the back of a pickup (hey – it’s TEXAS!) on a cold, rainy, Dallas morning. Brought them into Jon’s studio. Being cold alters the pitch of the chimes. Jon and I stood there with hair dryers WARMING UP THE CHIMES to room temp before we could finish the pkg.

And, as I recall, he allowed me to PLAY the chimes, despite the fact I had/have ZERO musical aptitude. G E C … how hard is THAT?

                        {Or maybe I imagined it all. Recreational pharmaceuticals were popular in those days.}

                          Hey Kevin,
A great story about the WNBC Chimes. Do you, or anyone else for that matter have a copy of the Jam WNBC jingle from “Pro Radio”, that says,
“The station that reaches the beaches all summer long—WNBC”? Thanks!

I just want to say what a GREAT montage you put on. I liked the WNBC TOH jingle, it was so cool.

I am looking forward to the next montage.

Just to say – it’s a real pleasure to see Kevin Metheney’s name on the forum – a name made legendary in JAM’s “Nothing but class” demo. Love the story of the chilly chimes!

When did PLJ start using Power 95 and what was the logo’s first package?

As I recall, having lived in NYC at the time, WPLJ flipped from AOR to CHR about the same time as Z100, in August 83. “Hitradio 95 WPLJ” used Hitradio from JAM mainly at first. I wanna say it was about 1985 when they started calling it “WPLJ – Power 95.” As Tracy Carman’s WPLJ montages showed, the first Power 95 jingles were actually resings of WABC’s classic JAM packages from the 70’s. The first custom singing “Power 95” was “Power Station.” If I am wrong, someone please correct me! (It’s been years, and the brain cells are fried.)

the WABC sound was indeed heard all across the nation during those times. nice to hear that and thanks for that jeff
