michi – do you mean the ‘Fresh’ resing for Lawson? I remember some custom JAM jingles for a station called Lawson CS Hot Station, about 20 years ago. A Japanese in-store network, as far as I know.
Lawson (also known as Lawson Station) is a major chain of “konbini” or convenience stores in Japan and in other places in Asia. There is even a Lawson store in Honolulu. Unfortunately when I was in Tokyo a couple of years ago, I did not pay much attention to the in-store music in the konbinis. Japanese radio is very much different to American standards. It is a lot more talk. At one time, there was a regulation that required that stations had a certain balance of talk and music. Many stations continue to operate that way despite the lifting of those restrictions. J1 presents Japanese pop in a format closer to American radio and we do get a majority of our listening hours from Japan. Los Angeles is the #2 market outside Japan behind Singapore.
The Lawson lyric is “LAWSON STORE HYAKU” – Hyaku is the number 100 in Japanese. Lawson now has a separate chain of stores called Lawson Store 100. This is a chain of 100-yen shops which are similar to our dollar stores.
